Rim of the World (2019)
WTF? I loved it.
I can't really grasp why it got such low reviews but I will just keep it brief and say that I am an 80s kid and it was fun. I think they accomplish just what they set out to accomplish, which is to make a fun summer movie. I wouldn't say this is really a kids movie so much as it is a throwback for those who loved kid adventure movies when they were growing up. Don't take it too seriously and I think you'll enjoy it!
Collapse (2011)
Worth the wait
This movie gets off to a good start with typical zombie fare done pretty well. It slows down a lot toward the middle of the movie (I skipped a good 10 minutes and missed nothing), but the ending made it all worthwhile. The ending was a specially well shot, and a fresh idea in this genre. For me it bumped the movie from a three out of 10 to a six out of 10, which is to say I think it is worth a look for those of you who love zombie movies but have watched every one that has ever been made me like I have. I also watched this for the lead actor who I met at a horror convention. He is in a lot of low-budget movies and was just generally nice guy so it's fun to see him take the lead: so there's my bias if you wanted to know!
Left Behind (2014)
I can't believe I'm saying this...
But the Kirk Cameron version is way way better! I am an atheist with a bit of a Christian media fetish: I like it cheesy with low production values and terrible acting. Also love overwrought messages being shoved down my throat. I find it all hilarious. However, there is nothing funny about this film. It sucks!!
Incredibly boring and poorly acted in the worst way but it feels like nails on a chalkboard. 30 minutes of pointless boring exposition before anything actually happens, and Nicholas cage looks like he's about to collapse from alcoholism. He's leaving Las Vegas on a jet plane.
Avoid at all cost!
Europa Report (2013)
Cosmic Candy For Space Lovers
A space-nut's dream. Having studied Europa in great depth because it is most likely our best chance for life in this solar system, I can say that this movie is profoundly accurate, with just enough artistic license taken so as not to lose the main body of viewers. I can understand why some who are maybe not as informed about challenges and realities of space travel might call the flick "dry", if go into the movie looking to feel, rather than to be "thrilled", then you may have a better experience. I can also say that I was inflated emotionally because of my personal philosophical views. Being an atheist and in touch with the vastness of space can hurt sometimes, and seeing my dreams of another life in the universe played out so realistically without the Hollywood cheese was almost a religious experience for me. Almost. So yes, this movie is not for everyone, but for some it will be deeply moving and enjoyable.
She (1984)
A turd woven from the finest gold
This is exactly what bad movies are supposed to be: a magnificent accident; bizarre; terrible dialog; insipid acting; but most importantly, uncontrived. Not like that Troma crap. Troma wishes its movies were bad, but all I see are contrivances: people who try to pawn off badly made bad movies as something special, like She. She is everything you want and more. Badly executed scenes for even more badly conceived plot points. Terrible costuming including spiked football helmets intended to look "post- apocalyptic". Male sexual fantasies enacted on screen, masquerading as female empowerment. But through all of it, an effortless "badness" that leaves one questioning, simply, "how?". How did this make it to film? How did it actually get made, and who actually looked at the final cut and said 'yep, it's just like I imagined it. Trust me, this is a golden turd. It's the reason we bother to watch terrible movies.
The Grudge (2004)
Another movie for the masses...no spoilers here
I must say, the previews really pulled one over on me this time. I'm sorry to those who liked this movie, but the sad fact is that it doesn't even follow it's own rules. I can't really say how and avoid spoilers, but I will say this to validate my point: pay close attention to what is said about the actual cause or reasons for the grudge. Now ask yourself, who was it that was killing people? Does this even make sense? Drop any predispositions you may have had about the movie and seriously think about it. It's not that I didn't "get" the movie. The movie didn't even "get" itself. It takes liberties and makes assumptions that don't follow logically, because it is dependent on the American addiction to flashy effects and cheap scares. I will say that the opening credits were unbelievably cool, and there were one or two moments that were passingly frightening, but the Grudge's overall value as a movie is not very high. If you do go to this movie, look at the people around you. Most of them are just acting scared because they are supposed to. It's unfortunate that the movie industry puts so little stock in us, the audience.
