Who Put the Klan Into Ku Klux Klan (2018)
An Eye-opening Film
Who knew that the basic design of the Confederate Battle Flag was taken from the Scottish Flag? The influence of Scottish pseudo-culture based on Sir Walter Scott's books was so pervasive? Who knew that the Klan in Ku Klux Klan was a different spelling of the Scottish word clan? Who knew that the book the Clansman by a Scottish-American Southerner would inspire the film Birth of a Nation and incite racial hatred in the early twentieth century? An astounding documentary which shows that clan over country is is still the belief of many today. Of course Scots did not invent racism, but their influence on the American variety is unmistakable.
Primal Fear (1996)
Roller Coaster that ends up
This is definitely worth watching all the way to the end. It seems like a predicable mediocre movie but ... I won't say more .. I thought Norton was overacting, but ... I won't say more.. Good to the last drop..
Uncle Drew (2018)
They Still Got Game
Great movie for anyone who loves basketball and is tired of watching Sarah Sanders every day. Suspend your disbelief and have a good time. I loved Blend Reggie Miller.
Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012)
Groucho and Gellhorn
If you know nothing about Martha Gellhorn then you should definitely see this uneven movie. She was a war correspondent, among other things, in the 20th century The film uses Zelig-like effects to insert the lovers into history, often in black and white. The film ends rather abruptly showing Hemingway's end, but not Gellhorn's. The film is overlong. Again, worth a look as an introduction to Gellhorn.
Original Sin (2001)
Good escapism
In one scene two characters are watching a play and one of them says"A bad melodrama." The is obviously a sly comments on the film itself. but it is a good bad melodrama. Don't read plot summaries as they will give the twists in the plot away. A sexy piece of fluff. Be prepared to suspend disbelief as required.
New Orleans (1947)
Fascinating Movie
Without Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday and their musical supporting cast, this would be a forgettable melodrama. To me the most interesting aspect of this movie is the contrast of cultures - the stuffy white world symbolized by classical/operatic music (some very excellent), the blues/jazz world of the downtrodden but resilient black population and the white "early adopters" of their music. The music is tremendous. Although this movie would never win an Academy Award except for music, the cast is overall excellent given their material. Anyone who loves Armstrong or Holiday should own this. I saw this on Turner classic movies and I'm going to buy it.
The Gambler (2014)
More Filn Noir than Kenny Rogers
If you enjoy a film noir kind of feel in movies you will enjoy this movie. This is not an action film and has no humor. It does have a soundtrack featuring obscure covers of famous songs. Check out the reggae version of a Pink Floyd song from Dark Side of the Moon (I can't remember the title.) John Goodman's performance stands out. With everyone else you feel like you're watching them on the screen. With him, you feel like he's in the room with you. This is definitely a suspend your disbelief kind of movie. It's hard to imagine the series of evens that happen in this movie really taking place. Not a date movie, not a feel-good movie, not a classic. But worth $1.50 at Red Box.
