Smokey and the Bandit (1977)
Best 1970s chase movie with cultural content
Smokey and the Bandit was my favorite childhood movie for 2 years. As I have gotten older, I appreciate it for its rich cultural content on CB radio, the 55 mph speed limit, and racial attitudes.
However, I have a general question for those out there: are you sure there was not an original release with more strong language? When I watch the film today, it seems like there are a lot of places where the dialog has been dubbed. Was there ever an R rated version? Some of the language is really twisted when racial or sexual topics are discussed.
The White Desert (1925)
Heroic characters trapped in snowed-in railroad town
I saw this 20 years ago with live organ accompaniment. This is a great silent movie, with lots of close steam railroad action. Note to railfans: this was clearly filmed on the Great Northern on their old pre-Cascade tunnel line. The plot occurs in a railroad work camp. Winter comes and the town is snowed in, likely for months. Something terrible happens and a dramatic rescue is required, hero, attractive heroine, etc. Lots of scenes of belching steam locomotives fighting the snow. The "white desert" is the snow, get it?
I don't really know what else to say. These old silents are not terribly long movies!
