Made in Britain (1982)
Plenty of truth and rage!
What makes this film work for me is that it presents Trevor's side of the argument without much editorial comment from the "authorities" who believe that they always know what's best for the rest of us. No apologies are made for his politics, his racial beliefs, or his anger, and that is so refreshing in a country in which all that matters is not offending anyone. Best of all, he doesn't change, or break down and cry, like Edward Norton's character in "American History X." After all, if you really believe in something, speeches won't make a bloody bit of difference.
When watching this film, if you're not of the same mind as the main character, try to understand and identify with him. Please don't approach him as a foul-mouthed racist who is therefore not capable of being right about anything. Also don't try to put the blame entirely at the feet of the Tories, because they didn't create immigration without assimilation.
Fingered (1988)
A bad review of a terrible film...
All the while that I watched this film, I kept thinking that it was perfect for a liberal college male who was just DYING to look at something pornographic, but didn't want to offend his feminist masters in school and at the local cafe. So he purchased the home video "Hardcore," a compilation of Richard Kern's films, to get what he really wanted while appearing as though he was a student of underground art. Deep, in other words, pushing the envelope, blah blah blah...
And if the bloke isn't too particular about what the woman in the feature looks like, then Lydia Lunch is his dream date.
The film is grainy, low-low budget, and grotesque. Sometimes a filmmaker who needs a few hundred hours of intense psychotherapy simply puts his nightmarish fantasies in a short film to hopefully inspire others to suffer from the same psychosis that he has. Kern definitely fits the bill, and so does "Fingered."
The way that Lung Leg is treated at the end is the perfect metaphor for how any sane audience member feels after seeing this rubbish. I wish that they had done it to Kern instead.
Sonic Youth: Scooter and Jinx (1990)
Nearly-nude Sonic Youth music video
This is the video for the song "Scooter and Jinx" on the album "Goo" by Sonic Youth. I have it on the "Goo" home video.
It depicts one woman (great-looking and punky) taking nude photos of another woman (also great-looking and punky), until something happens to the model. Cute, in a way, and silly, too. Not intentionally evil like many of his horrific films. In other words, this one doesn't give the viewer a terrible image in his or her head that can never be erased from their memory.
If you've ever seen his photographs, like the bondage series, you might recognize these two gals. I liked it more when it was new than I do now.
