Katyn (2007)
World War II History Redux
Nowhere in my history books did we learn that the Soviets murdered 20,000 Polish officers at the beginning of World War II. This movie shows that the atrocities suffered by Poland were at the hands of both Germany and the Soviet Union. The film is wonderfully realized at the same time that it provides an important history lesson. Poland had the greatest number of Jews killed, almost all of their intelligentsia murdered, and now we learn that the best and brightest of their military were taken out by Russia at the start of the war. That this country still survives and even thrives is a miracle. I was riveted by this film.
Saul e David (1964)
Anti-Semitic?
I arrived at this film somewhere in the first reel. I was impressed with the theatrical accomplishments. But as the scene depicting the confrontation between David and Goliath, and particularly the accolades heaped upon David because of his victory, I could not help but notice that David (the hero) was blond and blue-eyed, while all of his countrymen were dark-haired and brown-eyed. Why would David be Aryan? I can only assume that the filmmakers were sending a message of anti-Semitism. The broadcast I watched did not acknowledge the source of this film. How offensive that the Trinity Broadcasting Network gives this film their "blessing".
