BirdBox - Creepiest Unexplained Film in History
23 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is very interesting and captures your attention with its excellent premise. Something in various parts of the world that people see is causing them to kill themselves an/or others. It is well played by Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich and others and quite believable. I give this 7 stars only because the "creepsters" are never actually seen by the viewer and ARE NEVER explained either. This is a typical Stephen King or J.J. Abrams thing in their movies. For anyone who wants a completeness about their movie(s) it is extremely annoying - even more so the more unlikely the story is.

Beyond My Comprehension!
24 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Director Justin Lin directed 3 of the Fast & Furious movies and Simon Pegg has starred in and written some funny stuff, but their collaboration on this movie has produced an incomprehensible and lousy result! Maybe J.J. Abrahams should get out of the producer's chair and get back to directing? All the elements were here for a great movie EXCEPT any kind of glue to tie it all together. Often it was not interconnected making it hard to impossible to follow what was happening. Bet I could have made a better movie for a quarter of the cost. It is BEYOND my comprehension how this made it to the big screen in this condition. Loved Abrahams's Star Trek and Into Darkness but this one was awful.

Inspiration is FOR REAL
29 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Giving this 10 stars even though it has averaged 5.6 and I agree with the many (dismal) reviews in here in most ways. Let me explain. The 4 YR old Colton is utterly charming in this and Kinnear is in his usual likable style. In his last "sermon" in the movie he hits on something vitally important: that we have all experienced moments of "Heaven For Real" and forgotten them. "The world still astounds me each time I look at a star" from "Born Free" conveys the same meaning. Many of these reviews point out lackluster acting TRUE. Many - lack of excitement TRUE. Many - trivial references to near death and/or OOBE TRUE. Nevertheless, there is a streak of inspiration in this which I found tremendously appealing. It made me reflect that the greatest wisdom may indeed issue from the mouth of babes!

2093 A Creation Odyssey
12 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Having read through a few hundred of the reviews on this it would seem prudent to state up front my misgivings. While I agree with some of the statements about the writing and others about the stupidity, I must say that this is still magnificently spellbinding! Have not felt this great of "mystery excitement" since 2001 A Space Odyssey in late 60's. Some parts were not clear to me, but the overall theme was enthralling. It was actually insulting to see "Alien" horror in this as it is so cerebral the horror seemed out of place. One bit of stupidity on the biologist's part is unforgivable. When the biologist is attempting to "pet" the embryo-Suppositor you feel like giving a Darwin award when he gets thrashed. I thought the holographs were interesting but a little annoying. One would think that beings capable of creating WMD Aliens would make clear playbacks, not ghostly outlines. This movie was cool beyond belief!

The Grey (2011)
10/10
Excellent thriller!
6 May 2012
Liam Neeson never disappoints. "Grey" is one of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years! See "Next of Kin" from 1989 to see him again at his best. "Grey" is extremely thought provoking BESIDES the main thrilling plot. Was informed about "Grey" by someone I trust for accurate reviews and then was amazed to see how many negative reviews were included in here. Same with "Next of Kin" with its rating in here of 5.3. NOK deserves at least a 9. See it and you should be appalled at 5.3 and see this to wonder how its rated less than 9? "Grey" is brutal and tragic. Is this the problem for many movie reviewers? One person said he had spent 40 yrs in Canadian wild and "wolves" do not do these things. OK, then watch NatGeo for realism and don't try spoiling great writing and direction for others. I go to the movies to escape into something exciting and I DO NOT try to break the balls of realism while watching. This, NOK and AVP are the most ridiculous of ratings I've ever seen in IMDb. Please, girls, girlie men, kids and other woos-es: quit distorting rating in here!

Shuttered Awareness
8 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Scorsese scores again! Shutter Island is a great mystery thriller deserving even of Hitchcock, though Scrosese is a great director. IMO Decaprio has become a great actor. Was skeptical of him 12 or so years ago, but he is in many excellent movie since then. In SI you are observing point-of-view from within insanity. What you have to figure out in this movie is which person(s) are insane. While I checked the "spoiler" box, the outcome will NOT be spoiled here. Altered mental states make for difficult understanding especially when that POV is expertly directed. This is a favorite technique of David Lynch (Mulholland Drive prime example) but IMO, Scorsese has done it so masterfully in Shutter Island that even at the end when all the "evidence" is in, you will still find it difficult to believe. Depcaprio and Ruffalo are superb in this film. Methinks Scorsese and Decaprio deserve Oscars. This is a VERY excellent film.

Astonishing Cinema
19 December 2009
Read many comments in here before seeing this and they were spot on. This film is so beautiful and stunning it defies belief. Felt to me like seeing a film hundreds of years in the future. Story line is great and the Nav'i capture your heart very strongly. Avatar has taken movie creatures and special effects many, many steps forward. Some people have likened this to Dances With Wolves and there is a simple parallel but it is a great understatement. Telling folks about this verbally I simply say "words cannot convey." It is fairly long but so engrossing that one does not notice. It is so incredibly good, I will be shocked if it does not reach top 20 of all time in here. Saw it without the 3D and imagine that in 3D it would just simply blow the audience's brains clean out of their skulls. Indeed this film is a landmark and a new one to beat. Cannot imagine that happening anytime soon. Bravo, bravo, bravo!

Pandorum (2009)

Mental and Physical Aberrations in Space.
30 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Dennis Quaid is excellent in this Sci-Fi horror mystery thriller. Other characters are not well known, but they give an excellent performance.

Ambiance is very good in this too. There are some very horrible beasties in this. Some excellent surprise including the climax but that will not be revealed here. In the early part of this film, I nearly cringed when it showed "flyby" views of the monsters. That's where they go by so fast that you cannot focus on them. That irritates me greatly and make me feel like shutting the movie off immediately, but am glad I stuck with this because it turned out very good overall. Pandorum shows at the beginning that it is set about 160 years in the future and the Earth's population is over 24 billion. A distant habitable planet has been found and the ship is on a long journey to it. The ship appears to be miles long, as it can hold thousands of people. The science behind the mission and it's objective is well presented and sensible. The major twist in this is almost impossible to guess and some surprise scenes are very unexpected. Great Sci-Fi horror mystery!

What Dreams I've seen on Film!
25 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Warning: Am a heavy sentimentalist and 40+ year searcher for "Meaning of Life" on the scientific and metaphysical sides and this biases my review. What Dreams May Come is a wonderful and dramatic tragedy and drama. Certainly in my top 10 out of thousands seen.

It presents a plausible after life "spirit" existence without being dogmatic. Particularly wonderful for me was that Katie the dalmatian appears in "heaven" also. Really love Robin Williams "nice guy" movies and he is spectacular in this. Also really liked "Good Morning Vietnam" and especially "Dead Poet's Society" because his excellent characters in those are presenting positive and meaningful views of life. "Captain, My Captain!" is just wonderful in the context of Dead Poets. Anabella Sciorra is perfect in her role in this. Cuba Gooding, Jr. is eminently likable in this too. Max Von Sydow fits in perfectly too!

Annie has every right to give up and commit suicide, blaming herself for the kids' deaths and later blaming herself for Chris's death too. The love that they have for each other and their children is very inspiring. Chris's sadness over pushing his son too hard is also very touching.

What is most inspiring of all is when Chris finds Annie in hell, he loves her so much that he is willing to lose his mind and soul to stay there with her. How many people are fortunate enough to love like this?

The scenery in "Painted" heaven is exquisite beyond words. The interplay between heaven and earth is very cool. The appearance of "spirits" differently than on earth is fascinating too. This is by far the foremost afterlife movie ever made. If you liked "Heaven Can Wait" and/or "A Matter of Life and Death" and/or "Made in Heaven" and/or "The Bishop's Wife" then run, don't walk to rent this divinely beautiful film. Also, the soundtrack by Michael Kamen is far and away the most beautiful film music I've ever heard out of thousands. It is out of production and expensive but worth it. It's just amazing the wondrous feeling that it invokes. With all the misery and ugly shat in this world caused by humans, this soundtrack will convince you for a time that all is beautiful. Wow! 1000 out of 10 for this magnificent creation!

Twilight 2: Mooning the Fans.
21 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
In in my 50's and am an escapist meaning I do not try to "Break" movies but am incredulous about this one. Since I liked the 1st one, had to see this too. Overall the effects were excellent, the plot generally good. OK, cutie Bella lives near some woods and she is a helluva monster attractor. Vampires were acceptable to me, but she also attracts werewolves? Are you efing shatting me? WTF? This is for 7 year olds! Her friend of many years Jacob, all of a sudden turns out to be a werewolf, but he was born that way? First movie and much of this shows him as normal then confuses the viewer with his Lycanthropy. ARE YOU SHATTING ME? I was in an audience with about average age of 20 overall and many ppl besides me were laughing at scenes that WERE NOT intended to be funny. One spoiler not given away here is the very last line of the movie which is funnier than hail! Really, when everyone else is laughing, then I'm less concerned about offending the others by laughing. Again cool FX, good plot though poorly executed and some unintended bonus chuckles.

Paranormal Theater Success
7 November 2009
My confessional. Got suckered into seeing this by all the hype. Read many reviews in here and ignored the majority of them that called it lame. Yup. Very lame. Little character development, little ambiance and little effects. OK, this is supposed to be an amateur video and that shows. Production company didn't even spend a few thousand for titles. Not bad for an amateur video, but lousy for a theatrical release. At least one brain-dead protoplasmic moron in here compared it to the Exorcist and even Hitchcock. NO WAY! The people that own this must be laughing all the way to bank that this piece of crap is grossing big. Blair Witch was WAY better than this. B or even C horror movies are better. I had NO, 0, Nada sympathy for the characters and as for running from the theater screaming- it must've been to demand their money back. TV's ghost chasers is probably better. You've been warned...

Hitchcock-Esquire Thriller
17 October 2009
Watched this expecting a so-so remake of "Bad Seed The" but was Very surprised and glad how wrong I was. You already know its abut adoption and the child is bad but that does not even begin to scratch the surface of this MAJOR spine chiller. "Silence of the Lambs" creepy? 8MM creepy? Big yes, but in a different way this is creepier. No shat, really. The major surprise is so mind blowing I was stunned! This movie and story is worthy of Alfred Hitchcock. Let me give you my definition of creepy: plausible but extremely unusual and SO NOT anticipated, it's freaky. Some of the violence is awful, but the major surprise in this really messes with your head. The execution and direction of this is shockingly good.

Let Your Surrogate Cut the Grass
14 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Enjoyed this SciFi thriller though wanted it to be longer. Creepy in some ways, but very entertaining. Notable at first is that Willis appears to be 25 years younger. Radha Mitchell is stunningly beautiful in this, but like Willis, THAT is her surrogate. Effects are first class and story line and plot pacing is good. Am biased in favor of "Robot" movies and this one delivers decently, though I prefer a darker ambiance like Blade Runner. There is something VERY redeeming about this which involves Willis and his wife, but that should remain a surprise. There is a most excellent action sequence with Radha that You will find highly entertaining. Warning: If any of your loved ones are acting strange check the back of their head for a rectangular opening.

Killing UnDead for Sport
14 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Was disappointed in this though considered it fairly entertaining. Particularly good was the Bill Murray sequence. My biases are that I'm a huge fan of the "Dead" movies (over 200 now, maybe?) but prefer the "better" ones (Romero) over the low-budget ones. The basic fun is being immune to killing of humans, since the "dead" are no longer human. Am also a huge Woody Harrelson fan and he delivers in this. Usually in this genre, the lead characters eventually become overwhelmed by the dead and are consumed but that's a surprise in this one. Maybe my sensibilities are "deadened" but this just seemed to drag on with more of the usual same-O. Surprises in store for Twinkie lovers. Am still waiting for many dead movies to be made: The Melancholy Dead, The Anorexic Dead, Bored Dead, Rehabilitated Dead, Hypnotized Dead, Brain Dead, Finally Dead Dead, Time Traveling Dead, Prehistoric Dead, Emotionally Dead Dead to name a few. Stay Tuned.

Old Hag-Bag from Hell!
9 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This movie needs a new category: Horror, Thriller, Comedy. There is so many over-the-top scenes in this I could not stop laughing. Early in the movie this vile, filthy, disgusting old beach from hell shows up at the bank for another extension on her defaulted loan. Was unable to count how many colors of slime were coming out of her mouth, nose and ears. On top of that, her fingernails looked like solid fungus matter! The young lady turns her down and the old hag curses her and I think even her glass eye became lit up. So, this old fossil from the lower rungs of hell hides in the girl's car and attacks her when she's going home. This fight scene alone won me over for the whole movie. Old hag is choking the girl from the back seat and the girl guns the car then hits another car and the momentum throws the old beach from the back seat into the front, hitting the dashboard and knocking her rotten slimy false teeth out. The girl jams a ruler into her throat and the bag chokes on it SO HARD it is ejected and goes clean through the driver side window! Are you shatting me? After the rotten bag from walmart hell dies, her ghost appears physically in the girl's shed and again is choking her and the girl cuts a rope holding an anvil up above about 12 feet. The anvil comes down and squashes the hag's head off and the eyeballs pop out hitting the girl in the face. What more could you ask for in horror comedy? Have only scratched the surface here. This is well produced and has many surprises. Very entertaining.

Romance, Time-Travel, Mystery, Sci-Fi at its Best!
4 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This 20 year old is one of my all time Sci-Fi faves. First it has Cheryl Ladd at her most beautiful. Kris Kristofferson as a love interest. Time-Travel laid out in a fascinating manner. An adorable robot person. Daniel Travanti as a foil. Incredible transport of about to crash airliners to the future in order to save the folks and repopulate the Earth at an earlier time. Am amazed that this movie is classified by many as a "B" movie. The plot involves the entire lifetime of Kris's character and it is just wonderful how it pans out. Unfortunately its name will stand out less because of so many titles using the same. This one is VERY COOL!

Yayyyyy Aliens!
24 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
At first the shaky camera thing seemed dismaying. Gigantic alien ship hovering over Africa for months then we humans forcing our way in to find 1000's of "worker" bee aliens. OK, so the leaders had died is the explanation. So we build a slum tenement for them then treat them like bugs and call them Prawns because they look like humanoid shrimp. Your heart goes out immediately for them. Even the "nice" guy that interfaces with them for the eviction is a prick, at least until he understand their predicament from experience. The intelligent alien and his son are VERY endearing and capture much more sorrow from me than any human in the movie. Heck, the aliens even have greedy pawn brokers preying on them. One sad scene is when the military industrial complex is testing one of their weapons on a Prawn and the poor thing is looking around with fear. Pretty funny that the Prawn love eating cat food. Effects in this are stunning, action is compelling, though this is a rooster film and the chicks will enjoy it less. Pretty violent and gooey. It really captures and holds on to your interest. Particularly tantalizing is when you realize (from visuals) that these "dumb" alien bugs are actually far advanced over humans in their technology. This will obviously have a sequel. Can't wait.

Knowing Best Etertainment is My Forte
26 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Nicholas is great again. After loving "Next", was absolutely thrilled by Knowing. OK, a die-hard rationalist has his heart and mind opened by irrefutable evidence of the supernatural. OK, a bunch of weirdo looking guys are appearing at various times which is spooky and misleading. But when the apocalypse nears and Cage is crying saying goodbye to his son, who cannot be heavily moved? ESPECIALLY as the "Wheels of Ezekiel" have just appeared. This cannot possibly be a coincidence in the visual. Writer/Director MUST have been familiar with the Hebrew prophet. After seeing this fantastic film I am forever Knowing that it is wonderful and amongst my 500 favorites (out of over 5,000). If you have no imagination, no lust for truth, science and heavenly reality, this is not recommended. Otherwise, highly.

Exceptional Thriller
26 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Was excited at the opening to hear part of "Chevaliers De Sangreal" but wanted more so I bought said Hans Zimmer piece. Possibly the most inspiring and beautiful 4 minutes of music ever written! This movie is an exciting thriller masterpiece even w/o the religious considerations. You get to tour the Vatican and parts of Rome with excellent cinematography. The opening at CERN where the "God Particle" or largest quantity of Antimatter is created with STUNNING visuals is an immediate clue which foretells the excellence of this movie. Who doesn't love Hanks? The storyline and twists in this film are just superb and well drawn out until the amazingly twisted climax. This film suggests a satisfying compromise between Science and Religion though plenty of closed heads will persist on both sides. "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." A.Einstein

20 September 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Go figure! Malkovich, Swindon, Clooney, McDormand, Pitt. All great players in many great movies. Coen brothers, writer/directors of great movies. 8.1 on IMDb before I saw this. Fooled again. Saw today with and audience of about 30. Average age appeared about 40. Only a few laughs in this misadventure and that among the whole audience. Worst waste of major talent I've ever seen! Entertaining in a quaint way. Only thing I can figure is generation-Y is rating this so high. Here's the spoiler: Its BORING! How could so many people rate this so high? Is the world population now so desperate for entertainment? Though the Coen brothers have made some great movies, this is NOT one of them. They are no longer a trusted source for me.

Very Intriguing and Cool! What is with IMDb reviewers?
6 September 2008
Each to their own, but Im becoming more curious about reviewers in here as time goes on??? Have liked Diesel since Pitch Black but do not consider him Lawrence Olivier. Took a chance on this DESPITE the poor reviews in here and it paid off. Reminded me of a combination of Blade Runner, Children of Men and James Bond movies in general. The great mystery in this movie is tantalizing and properly held back till late in the story.

Do the reviewers in here expect a movie to be Star Wars Episode III to be above a 5? Are they all early teens? Of limited imagination? WTF is going on? Not assuming Im like everyone else, but am mystified by poor reviews in here very often, including on this one. Examples: Hellboy 1 and 2; personally liked 1 better because of the romance and etc, but 2 had tremendous effects. Van Helsing - superb story and effects, Frankenstein was lovable! Effects tremendous. Either Im too easy to please or many of you are JagBags expecting too much in every movie. Darnit! I need to understand the different points of view in order for this to be useful to me because I really love this site! I know this is not a newsgroup and is not for back and forth communication, but this is only the 4th or 5th review I've done because Im appalled at the difference in my perception Vs. others??? Another example, possibly the greatest is AVP, Alien Versus Predator. I thought it WAY outstanding but it was rated lukewarm in here. My choices are very eclectic, some I rate VERY high are "Never Ending Story 1" "Last Mimzy" "Terminator - All" "Alien" - All, "Predator" - All but latest, "August Rush" "SecondHand Lions", "Cider House Rules", "Big Fish", "Superman" - All but IV. "I Am Sam", "Million Dollar Baby", "Mystic River", Clint Eastwood - ALL, Morgan Freeman - All, Mos Def - ALL. Jack Nicholson - ALL. Etc, etc, etc.

Highlander: The Source (2007 TV Movie)
5/10
The Flatulent Guardian.
25 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Being a huge fan of the Lambert Highlander series, I had to watch this although I've never seen Adrian in the TV series. Gave this 5 stars because its so bad its good and will provide lots of laughs. First off, Adrian Paul is good, in fact he was probably 90% of the budget. The Guardian seems cool near the beginning where he kills a highlander after announcing "There Can Be Only Me" but when you get a good look at him and hear his voice, he's like a punk rocker with a double lobotomy (thats a slice down the middle and a left-to-right slice). Its cool that he can zip around at about 10X speed but when he does you hear this sound like a playing card in a bicycle, or a drawn-out fart (is that how they did this sound effect?). OK, it post-apocalyptic and these highlanders team up and cruise around is a shitty old sedan. Do immortals need a car? They find out the "Elder" has knowledge of the "Source" so they travel to this Transylvania looking monastery which looks like it was repossessed from Count Alucard himself and lo and behold, Duncan MacLeod's ex-wife shows up by coincidence and they drive their crummy vehicle through this like 100 Ton door and the monkeys inside stand there like they're thinking "Come On In" and they go inside to see the Elder and the Elder looks like a flattened version of Jabba the Hut! (Actually the Elder ate all the Sauce is why they can't find it -source). Anyhow they continue their search in some woods full of cannibals and they all get tied up by these drunken stOOpiD slob cannibals. They get away, that is the idiot cannibals let their "Food" run away! Oh, I forgot to mention the Cardinal Giovanni character would get his head lopped off by me just for having an OBNOXIOUS HAIRCUT! There's another youngish immortal traveling with them and he appears to be a moron, but with a twist - he explains to Duncan's wife that he is very bright, but just acts stupid! Shortly after the Guardian takes his moronic butt out. There's a scene where Duncan's wife and he are having a romantic conversation and its about as authentic as a 3-cent piece. Don't miss this great comedy!

There's a Magic to Junebug that's impossible to find!
9 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is SOOOOO banal and boring it is beyond belief. Have I entered the Twilight Zone? 7.2 with over 5,000 votes? This is what I refer to as an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox where my Web Browser has partially worm-holed, reversing the score since 2.8 would be generous. The only actor I recognized was the father and even then, he's a character actor, not known by name. This is a slam on southern people and their simplicity (charming to people who have seen the "Big" city and are tired of its BullCrap) and almost NOTHING happens. The big event is the sad stillbirth of the baby Junebug and that is only a small footnote near the end. Have seen over 5,000 movies over 50 years, and this may be the most NOTHING one I've seen. Feeling sorry for the director, screen-writer of this movie. If I had sneezed while watching, it would have been more eventful than this whole movie. At least the Madeline character was cute, but not enough to save this. Btw My spoiler is that Nothing happens.

Couldn't recognize the saints...
9 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Even though Im a Downey fan, I found this movie very boring and suspect that Downey was 90% of the budget and the hopeful draw and it worked on me. Story was so-so, a little interesting but I could hardly "recognize his saints" and was stunned to see Downey in this, although he didn't direct it or write the script. Have a feeling that something maybe wonderful and profound was intended by the writer-director but it unfortunately, was not communicated to me. The highly interesting title suggests to me a story of someone's life going way wrong and a wake-up call where that someone recognizes the people that helped him through it. Didn't see that in this, but I was hoping. My spoiler is that you will wish for this to end before its halfway through...

Intelligent Seekers: You are NOT alone
2 October 2006
As can be expected, the comments on this run the gamut as though people were picked randomly from a crowd to watch it. For anyone who has looked into Science, Metaphysics, Occultism-Ugh, Spiritualism, Rosicrucianism, Templarism, Taoism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Shamanism, hypnotism and ESPECIALLY post-classical physics, this is HIGHLY interesting, particularly the Double-Slit experiment segment. For the most part, these are intelligent no-nonsense people in Part 1, have not seen Part 2 yet. OK, so ignore the parts you don't like, quit getting huffy about pseudo-science and enjoy! For anyone who is interested in the world around them and attempts to understand it, this will be very entertaining. If you're only interested in confirming your own beliefs, or in just slamming it for slamming sake, go back to grade school, or into a coma so the world might be a better place without your "observation." BwAAAAHAHAHHAHAMuaaaaHHHHHH !!!
