Not Without My Daughter (1991)
Molina's screen presence made me nervous in my own home
It's obvious that review bombing films is nothing new, as they were doing it back in the early 2000s and I saw one review from freaking 1999. Complaints about the film not being set in actual Persia or Iran had me rolling my eyes- the ignorance of these people. As if these countries would allow Westerners into them to film.
I watched this tonight and was wowed. The little girl could act, made you feel for her, and was so precious. Sally Field was savvy, resourceful, and someone to look up to.
Molina showed true anger in his eyes. Whenever he came onscreen I could feel my heart jump in fear for the two girls.
Stunning portrayal of the unfair and unjust laws set around women in other countries. Ladies, we don't know how amazing we have it here. It could be taken in an instant, and this film does a phenomenal job of reminding us that good men are vital to a harmonious and free culture.
Call the Midwife (2012)
Forget historical accuracy, we must be entertained by issues of the world we live in today
I loved this series wholeheartedly, but after season 9 I realized the writers of this show decided to skew historical accuracy in order to reflect the world we live in today. Doctor Turner advocating for abortion so passionately made me feel uncomfortable - he was nearly salivating for it. Turning Trixie into an advocate for it was heartbreaking. How many little persons had this character helped enter this world and then suddenly she has utter disregard for them simply because their mothers are poor?
Classist behavior simply does not become her. And eugenics has no place in a show that revolves around birthing children.
The episode of Dr Turner happily telling a young man with horrible sexual diseases that he is totally normal was interesting... Not once did he explain the "normal way you are hardwired" was actually the reason the boy was so sick?
The writers disappointed me heartily with their push in including modern issues that were VERY taboo in the 60s and would not have been so readily accepted or encouraged. But leave it to modern cinema and Hollywood to convince you that society has always been this way. It's you, the viewer, that has it wrong.
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021)
Pure Feel Good Summer Fun
My husband and I watched this movie and loved it. Both of us teared up a couple of times, laughed plenty of times, and just appreciated a simple movie about young people navigating through life. We're in our twenties, but we still find it refreshing when teen movies omit the sex and stupid petty tropes and focus on families and a strong storyline.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
Snooze
My sister in law and i decided to work our way through the Twilight series because we were bored. We had never seen them, despite me being nearly 30 and her being 22.
The most fun we've had is ripping apart the story plot holes, bad acting, and horrible script. There are no character arches, and we have felt nothing for any of the characters except embarrassment.
Well, tonight we watched Breaking Dawn, pt 1, and we found ourselves chatting and getting distracted rather that watching the movie- that's a bad sign.
Then we realized we had just watched a movie where a couple gets married, gets pregnant, has a little difficulty with the pregnancy, the neighbors aren't too happy with the pregnancy, but she has the baby and ta-da.... End scene. Oh. and the wolves suddenly can talk aloud...?
I thought there would be more about the evil vampires, since they were foreshadowed in a dream at the beginning, but no... just a clip mid-credits where they get mad at their secretary.
After declaring the first film to be the worst, it has officially been dethroned by this teenage travesty.
The only part that was somewhat deep was the blond vamp insisting they call it "baby" while the others referred to it as a fetus, because it actually went hand in hand with her character from the previous movie where she had stated that all she had wanted were children and a husband. She is shown rocking the baby and humming to it happily, which was actually a nice touch. I see people getting into an uproar over this, thinking it's an anti-abortion statement, but it's literally just what this woman died desperately wanting, therefore it is all she will ever want for the rest of time. Calm yourselves down.
Anne of Green Gables (2016)
Cringey, whiny, and listless
Wow. After watching the 1985 film, there really are no comparisons... Though the train wreck Netflix has to offer is still worse than this, i was left feeling empty watching this version. Matthew is forced to be a bumbling idiot instead of a shy, thoughtful soul. Marilla takes an almost immediate liking to Anne, and therefore removes the fear she is to be sent back to the orphanage, which was a huge story plot. In fact, it's implied Marilla intends to keep her. Removing this takes away your desire to root for Anne, as there is she is in no danger. At the end, a year later, the orphanage says they will take her back, and it feels oddly out of place. Instead of Marilla saying she loves her and wants to keep her, Rachel has to step in and force her to go and get Anne.
Focusing on Matthew's impending heart attack 30 minutes into the film is also odd- why highlight his doom instead of Marilla's character arc?
Instead, we go from seeing him chasing a pig around until he falls into a mud puddle to a wheezing frail man in just a few short scenes is hard to watch. But it all blows over in this version and we don't lose Matthew... again, strips away the fragility and meaningful relationships Anne builds with her new parents.
Having Anne whine about her chores ("ew ew ew" in the hen house...? really?) and flying off the handle with screaming and whiny tears every time something goes wrong is an odd take on the ever graceful, albiet clumsy, Anne i grew up loving. I'm sure this young actress tried her hardest, but in doing so, her lines are either delivered emotionless, or far too aggressive. Her vocal daydreaming appears as contrived as her freckles.
The croup scene is pathetic in comparison with the 1985 movie( I still want that child to win an award for acting sick!) and again, removes any fear for actual danger. I found myself worried for Anne only once duing the tobogganing scene, but even then i knew Matthew was in hot pursuit before she even wandered onto the ice. But then her screaming at Matthew to go faster(after suffering a small heart attack?) while he slowly walks to her makes me wish she would've just dunked under for a minute. Insult to injury, she inquires(for the 3rd time) for an expensive dress while he recovers in bed.
The soundtrack is all over the place, lacking an Anne theme, and playing odd Irish influence music here and there.
This film is sugary sweet without true emotion.
Just, overall an abysmal failure at capturing such a beautiful story that has already been done fabulously.
Dragonheart: A New Beginning (1999)
Somehow the 1995 CGI was better than the 2000 CGI
I was impressed by the graphics in the 1995 Dragon Heart and figured it was only going to get better as the years went by and the technology improved. Boy was i wrong... the actors aren't bad and somehow carry the film on their shoulders- the dragon- Drake- is a weird computer game animation that looks misplaced and whoever did the voice work sounds a bit stoned at times. The film quality is worse than the 90s OG at times, but I watched it nonetheless because again, the acting wasn't bad and i figured I'd need to watch it for the 2015 one to make sense.
Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
Lots of laughs
Funny until the end. Steve was hilarious in his character, because he was very real and animated, but actually had a few moments where he became hurt by harsh words and withdrew into himself, or angry at Paul after hearing him say negative things about him behind his back. But these moments were then trip wired to have him snap back into his grinning wacky character to keep the entire movie on a light note.
I have to say, I was laughing very hard during the chase scene between him and Paul Rudd's maniac stalker girlfriend. His performance was not forced or overly funny to where it seems like a theatrical, and he played well off of Paul Rudd, who himself had a few golden moments, such as singing high pitched opera without knowing his employer was behind him, or acting like an earwig. Definitely worth watching. Grab a few friends and enjoy.
