Better than I thought
25 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I went to see War Horse a few weeks after it had come out on general release and, consequently, had heard and read a few reviews of the film which had lowered my expectations. While there are some obvious faults in it, I was pleasantly surprised. The fact that the plot moves along almost as a series of episodes had been criticised in one of these reviews but I thought it both made sense and allowed the film to keep moving at a reasonably quick pace. I felt that you did feel for the different people the horse comes into contact with as it moves from field, to farm, to army training and then through various different areas of the war. We are shown how many different groups of people can be effected and the different ways they suffer in, without seeing too much blood and guts. Been trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible so hope I didn't go into too much detail for anyone who's not already seen it. Whether it's still in the cinema or on DVD, this film is definitely worth seeing.

Powerful film about an important time for Italy
16 January 2007
This is the middle part of Rossellini's guerra trilogy and (having already seen Roma Citta Aperta) I am eager to track down a copy of the third part to see where Rossellini goes with it.

Going back to the idea he originally had for Roma Citta Aperta, Rossellini has created a pretty accurate and informative film. While there is one scene which to me stood out as being out of context with the rest of the film, I really enjoyed the use of amateur actors to help make it seem more real and I think the film is all the better for it.

I am not anything like a cinema expert, especially on the technical aspects of it; but I could not help but be impressed by the way the episodes in the film are linked together and that events which happen at different times and in different places all seem part of the one story (except for one episode as I already mentioned above).

I would love to see it on DVD as the copy I bought on video only has sound in the 3rd episode.
