Mary & George (2024)
Beautifully executed
Well acted and produced. As someone who watches a lot of historical period pieces, I enjoyed the way this story was told. It's not a perfect series but the entire production creates a captivating story. Julianne Moore could have easily carried this but she didn't need to, it was very well cast and Nicholas Galitzine perfect. I hope Hollywood doesn't keep siloing him in rom coms, he's clearly better than that.
Absolutely worth the watch. Honestly the bad reviews are pearl clutching nonsense coming from viewers better suited for Hallmark production forms of realism. This is made for real people and about real people.
Foe (2023)
Beautiful throwback via modern sci fi
Absolutely loved it. Why I fell in love with films. Tapped methodologies of the masterful auteur rebels of the 70's and I am here for it. Yes, the journey was sometimes very annoying. That's what makes the fantastical storytelling human, layered and relatable.
Incredible for performance by Paul Mescal. I loved the way he played Connell and this performance absolutely hit it. His performances are consistently impressive. Likewise, Saoirse Ronan was amazing. As always!
Honestly I feel sorry for the abundance of reviewers who didn't get it. Watch more films. In this case, John Cassevetes and Stanley Kubrick.
Perfect example of "bad reviews = film of substance that's a piece of art vs commercial panderfilm".
Persuasion (2022)
Not Anne
The film itself was... fine but if you're going to modernize a classic novel by reimagining the main character and tweaking all of the dialogue then change the name of the story. Yeesh.
Spencer (2021)
Patronizing Diana Spencer
While I truly appreciate the efforts of Larrain and Stewart, the resulting film was an insufferable experience ultimately painting a patronizing image of Diana Spencer. Was this woman's entire identity her mental illness? I wonder how her loved ones would feel watching this.
Even though her situation is completely dehumanizing the film felt self indulgent and I found it difficult to emphasize with her. The King Henry/Anne Boleyn/Jane Seymour metaphors seemed ironic given how Diana's mental health was portrayed.
Perhaps one needs to be obsessed with 20th century British royalty and deeply educated on all of the bios written about her and this period? I don't know but I'm not and can't stand this portrayal.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
Well written
Season one was addictive and well written. Looking forward to season two!
