The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
Was this a comedy ?
I'll keep this short, the same as this film kept my attention and interest for, Let's start with... a Hadron collider in space, why?... let's continue with a tank full of worms disappearing after the 'misfire' and a crew member who then slowly felt unwell until it resulted him dying before they all exploded from his mouth... with the line "Well we found the worms".
This is a film that tried to take itself seriously with some serious science, world crisis and technology to intrigue us, but the content was farcical comedy which nobody could surely take seriously... a paradox indeed.
Pacific Rim (2013)
Entertainment for a certain target market only
Some films must have a marketing team that dictate who this type of film will be aimed at. I won't go into how that split most likely occurs but this film has been clearly aimed at those who just love effects and couldn't give a hoot about the storyline and continuity.
Hence Pacific Rim has astounding special effects, the battle scenes, technical military facilities and 'jaegers' are very well done. But as a result very little attention is spent on the storyline, it shallowly consists of 'mad' but brilliant of course larger than life (over acted) scientist characters plus warriors (soldiers) some with the utmost integrity and some just 'bad ass'. Basically good guys V bad guys but both on the same side... "Who will save the world?".... Q internal wrangles and corridor scuffles over who has the best idea.... Yawn !
Then you have scenes such as the one where the clever lady with an immaculate hairstyle is waiting on a busy rain soaked and windy military dock holding an umbrella waits for a helicopter to land just in front of her. It does so, cut back to the lady and her hair is still very much immaculate and not a spot of water on her !.
If you can stand the shallow script and painful over acting, then watch it through. If not use the fast forward button to the battle scenes, the plot is fully explained in the summary of this film on this site.
Zombie Night (2013)
A real 'Could have been good' !
3 stars for the gore effects, quite obviously the majority of the limited budget went into them. If the writers would have tried to make this a humorous affair, the appalling acting, script writing and storyline might just have worked. In fact, it could have been good if the film didn't try to take itself seriously. The film almost titters on the brink of humour before you realise it's a very serious affair failing badly.
Even Zombie fans should be upset with the film. We all know Zombies don't care, they just amble directly at their target. No moving obstacles out of the way or bypassing defenses or defending themselves from attack. All of which the Zombies do in this film... ruins the 'Mindless Zombie Killer' effect we all know and love.
In the end we are left with a film that has you thinking "that would have been funny if...." and "some of the effects are not too bad" and... "Wow ! I could drop a piece of paper in a cage full of Monkeys and find a better script written on it ten minutes later. Then hire the Monkeys to act it out".
