Vixen (2015)
Vixen - 1 Episode per Season
Don't expect to get attached to this show. Vixen is a 5 minute per episode show, which is basically an episode of a regular show cut into 5 minute parts. By the time you do feel some emotional involvement to the story you get to see the subtitles.
Furthermore, quality of the artwork of the show isn't all that remarkable - its just about what you'd expect from DC and Warner Bross. The only good thing to report on the artwork is Vixens new appearance. She actually looks like a regular person, as opposed to her bitchy glamor look from before.
As for the Story, the show is building up slowly, taking their time to tell a tale. this could be a good thing if an episode would last 20 to 30 min, but tanks miserably with a 5 minute show. You get what is happening in the story, but without the emotional dept you would feel from a longer episode.
My advice - wait until every episode has aired and watch them all in a row, and maybe, just maybe, you'll manage to get some joy out of this show.
Star Trek: Renegades (2015)
Star Trek Renegades, Builds on the existing star trek universe
If it was up to me, i would put JJAbrams in an airlock and vent, simply for turning Star Trek in a semblance of Star Wars. This is why i was so eager to see this project come to fruition.
Though the dialoges between the characters seems a bit rehearsed i enjoyed the story. Up until now Star Trek has been about 'boldly going where no man has gone before', showing a crew of a Space Station or Star Ship exploring the universe (although DS9 didn't focus as much on exploration as the other series).
To me, as i'm sure to others as wel, it began to look like everybody in the startrek universe is, or was, enlisted in starfleet, or a colonist on a foreign world. ST-R ends all of this by portraying a band of rogues and criminals as the main protagonists, both building on, and honoring, the existing Star Trek Universe almost as much as JJAbrams wrecked it.
Not only did they bring beloved characters (and the actors that played them) back to the screen, but there where plenty of aspects that tied the movie into all of the other Star Trek series that came before, and they even brought on an actor from the Fan-Fiction Star Trek Continues series (which i can also highly recommend). I was especially enamored by the 'Admiral Nimoy Memorial' which was clearly intended as a last salut to the late Leonard Nimoy aka Spock.
All in all, i give this Pilot, which i hope will lead to a new Star Trek Series, 2 thumbs up.
Fantastic Four (2015)
Fantastic 4 is good movie with some room for improvement.
I thought i would have problems with a younger cast for the Fantastic Four, but none of that.
I have to bite my lip so frequently with Superhero movies, because the movie adaptions always seem to make incredibly weird and stupid changes to the stories and/or character. I'm still weirded out by a Superman in Man of Steel, who allows his Pa to sacrifice himself to save a dog so he could keep his powers a secret, and doesn't lure enemies away from populated areas, so they can remain safe!? ...and what about Iron Man accidentally creating Ultron, while in the comics Antman created Ultron on purpose for his science projects. in that same movie quicksilver dies - so how is he ever gonna stand up to his daddy, Magneto in future movies!?. It all makes me feel like movie writers do not trust the 60 years of insight and experience of comic writers - are they really dim enough to believe that they can fix within a year what took comic writers decades to create and improve!?
In this case there was a lot less to break my teeth on - the only real disappointment i found is actually a repeat mistake. Again, the movie Dr Doom is an independent villain without any support and a very direct and maniacal approach, while in the Comics he is the archetypical master villain with lackeys and minions in the form of Latveria (the Country he rules with an iron fist) and Doombots (Robots build with the same tech as his armor), always busy setting ingenious longterm plans in motion to get more powerful. ...And really, the writers couldn't be bothered to give doom his own separate origin (like in the comics, where he is more like an evil Ironman, rather than a mutant, like the Fantastic 4)!?
Although there were some other changes made to the story, as whole these have little impact on the overall plot line or characters ('Going into space and getting hit with cosmic radiation' really isn't all that different than 'traveling to an alternate dimension and getting hit by a blast of alien energy').
Even though i like the 2005 version a lot better (and not just because of Jessica Alba), i think its still a good movie and definitely worth the time of comic fans and movie buffs alike.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
where's the dept of the Plot
I think it's great that JJ Abrams is trying to get a wider audience for Star Trek. The FX's are certainly spectacular. however, the special effects get so much attention that the dept of the stories suffer, and the finer details, for which i know Star Trek best, leave much to be desired. When i saw Startrek the Beginning the first thing that popped into my head was "I think they made a mistake, this isn't Star Wars, is it!?". when i saw Star Trek into Darkness i thought, "My god! they botched it again!"
You have to understand - i have always seen Star Wars as an entertaining action packed sci-fi fairytale and Star Trek as its more tempered intelligent big brother. they were always meticulous with details, especially chronologically and the stories carried a great moral content. so now i got to ask, for example... how come the klingons got their cranial ridges back, which they lost in season 4 of Startrek Enterprise, which was clearly used as the basis for the new star trek movies.
so please, bring back my star trek to me - i really do not need another Star Wars. the one we already have is plenty. I need a Sci-Fi that isn't afraid of asking their audience to think about the big questions, which the latest 2 Star Trek movies clearly seem to lack.
Remember, action and special effects are good... as long as the integrity of the story does not suffer from it.
