In the Earth (2021)
A slow burn into nothing.
Good start with potential. Then it just dragged on with a bunch of nonsensical misdirection. Acting was decent, plot seemed promising, but there's no real closure. Just a mind trip that leaves you wondering.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
I don't understand the hate here...
First things first: this is not the Freddy Robert Englund gave us. Robert Englund was a cynical horror villain that can't be topped in his role. That is why they didn't try to top him. They reinvented him. In this adaptation, we see a more monstrous Freddy Krueger, with hints of the original. Instead of the creative and playful style of the original Krueger, we now see a more direct, vengeful, and downright scary version of Freddy.
The movie plot certainly stays true to the original in how everything works, but this Nightmare focuses on the basics: stay awake or die. Period. Sure the deaths weren't as creative, but like I said before, Freddy is more direct in this one. He doesn't toy with you. He goes for the kill quickly.
Let's get to the face and voice though... one look at this Freddy gives you the impression he is dead serious on his mission. The original Freddy looks burned, but in a way that was meant to look cool. They don't go for that this time... this Freddy looks REALLY burnt, making him look more sinister... but still keeping to the idea of the original. The voice, while simply sounding angry and sometimes taunting in the originals, was replaced with an evil, mostly calm, and satisfyingly scary voice... one that reminds you how dark this villain is really supposed to be.
While you can never replace the original Nightmare on Elm Street, nor Robert Englund, this is an enjoyable new take on Freddy that I personally liked a lot. Sorry to all you haters but I think you were expecting an intricate story or something, and that's not what these movies were ever about. That or you were expecting someone trying to act like Englund, which I would have seen as a simple ripoff. 8 out of 10.
Brickleberry (2012)
It's a certain kind of humor
First off, Brickleberry is not your typical teen-to-adult cartoon. This is a full on, only for adults cartoon. It is overseen by Daniel Tosh, if that shouldn't give a hint to how far this show is willing to go.
That being said, I personally love this show. It's rare to see a TV show be this bold and ballsy. Each character is perfectly inappropriate in their own ways, making for constant laughs. They push the limits for shock factor (a gay bomb, that makes people gay), and don't care about offending people.
Brickleberry is not for everyone, and certainly not a family friendly show, but people who can take a joke and laugh at bold humor should love this show.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
A new twist with good and bad
Growing up with the Ninja Turtles shows, movies, and action figures, I was pumped for this movie. I had no problem with the reveal of how they looked, as... wait for it... THEY'RE MUTANTS!!!
This movie was almost what I expected. For the first fifteen minutes, they focus on April. When the turtles do appear, we only get quick, shadowy glimpses of them as they kick Foot Clan butt. Then the movie opens up, and we quickly meet the adversary Shredder in an interesting scene. As the movie progresses however, we see less of the man under the armor and eventually he simply stays in it.
Splinter was... simply put... BADASS!! We finally see the turtles' master do his thing. The turtles? Amazing. They capture the attitude we felt back in the 80's and 90's with the same style of humor. They fight with a smoothness and agility even cartoons couldn't quite nail, much less the 90's movies.
On the downside, the origins of the turtles and Splinter we grew up knowing have been scratched and re-written. Not to mention tying April O'Neil's father into the back story (as though that's original), making her more important than previous Turtles renditions would have her be.
While there are parts you may look at and sigh with disappointment (April being so obviously dumb in her choices), this is basically an hour and forty minute, live action Ninja Turtles cartoon episode. Definitely a must see for TMNT fans!
Lost in the Barrens (1990)
A well made movie with believable tension.
A young man named Jamie is forced to leave his home and had to go live with his uncle deep in the woods, far from his usual lifestyle of sports and friends. He arrives there, only to detest the new lifestyle he must now get used to.
He soon meets his uncle's friends, a tribe who is about to embark on a hunting trip as well as being the test for manhood for Awasis, the youngest. Jamie is pressured to join, despite his reluctance.
When Jamie and Awasis become separated from the rest of the tribe, they embark on a mission to find them again, each having to overcome their intolerance for the other's ways. Their mission takes them through many obstacles, their biggest being the barrens, a vast expanse of tundra, wrought with hungry bears, freezing temperatures, and an unforgiving glare from the sun off the snow.
Lost in the Barrens is a well made movie with decent acting and gorgeous scenery. Definitely a movie for people who enjoy the outdoors.
