Ex Machina (2014)
Had Great Potential
This movie is one of the countless that have come out of Hollywood that had great potential.
However, like so many personalities in Hollywood, it sold it's soul for a cheap finish.
There were some beautiful ideas in this movie, and it could of been great.
However, the producers chose to go for the cheap thriller effect, instead of exploring what truly makes us human or machine. Conceived, written, and produced by idiots with now soul.
Don't waste your time.
The only redeeming part of this movie was when the dweeb gets sent to the sticks, and is surprised when his smartphone tell him that there was no signal. The producers and writers of this piece of crap obviously had no signal also.
Tokarev (2014)
I Was Really Surprised
Okay, to be honest, I have never been a Nicholas Cage fan. Quite frankly, I think he's been way over-rated in most of his movies.
However, I have to say that I was really surprised when I saw this. Please understand that this is far from a great movie, I honestly have to give props to Nicholas Cage on this one. I don't know if it was the dialogue, the director, or what, but the guy really does some genuine acting in this film. I have a lot more respect for him after watching this.
Even though the plot is more or less predictable, the cinema photography is way above par for a movie of this kind. Not only that, but the actors in this film really earned their pay this time. Respect to them.
White House Down (2013)
A Poorly Conceived Piece Of Left-Wing Trash
Although this movie has one or two okay action scenes, the plot is all too predictable once you realized that the writers and producers of this film wanted to use every left-wing cliché in the book.
I won't offer any spoilers. I'll just tell you that you don't want to spoil your evening by wasting the time or money to rent this piece of drivel.
You may have thought that this movie was about the White House being taken over. It's much more accurate to say that, according to this movie, liberals are good, and anyone who is conservative or served in the military is evil. There is no doubt in my mind that this plot was taken straight from the DNC's play book. A true insult to the intelligent. Pee Wee's Big Adventure has more credibility that this film.
Anything by Michael Moore is more believable than this. And that, dear readers, is really really sad.
The Last Push (2012)
Finally, An Honest Sci-Fi Movie
I don't want to put down the Star Trek genre, and anyone who is honest doesn't consider Star Wars true science fiction.
However, I want to say that it is truly wonderful to come across a movie like this that shows that "Sci-Fi" is not code for "Space Horror".
This movie is truly what science fiction should be. And exploration of the human condition in extraordinary circumstances of advanced technology.
Some may find this movie slow, but I thought it was beautiful. It is an excellent study of the human being in extraordinary circumstances, and one who retains his humanity. Movies like this are rare gems. It was a pleasure to see it and think about it. If you truly love real science fiction, then this is the movie for you.
The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
Beautiful Movie
This film was the wonder answer to that piece of trash, "Matrix".
While the "Matrix" offers a negative and morally repugnant view of the universe, this movie offers a positive contrast to that. The fact that this movie praises and supports love and admiration as opposed to the hatred one finds in the matrix is really refreshing.
There are some atheist haters that love this movie, but they miss the point.
True love and self-sacrifice trumps all self-interest.
Watch this, and have a feel good moment.
Anyone who doesn't understand it, well, all I can do is feel sorry for them.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Such A Tragedy
It is impossible to avoid comparisons to any "Pearl Harbor" movie (no matter what the title) to "Tora, Tora, Tora".
I honestly believe that the producers of this movie had good intentions. However, they obviously had one handicap that they could never overcome.
The Hollywood that produced "Tora, Tora, Tora" was a radically different Hollywood than that of today. The main difference was that, in that late sixties and early seventies, may of the people who made up the Hollywood scene were actually veterans. In other words, they understood personal sacrifice and loss.
Despite the best efforts of today's Hollywood, they just don't get it.
The depiction of the Japanese is two-dimensional and stereo-typical. The planner and executors of the attack on Pearl Harbor (Yakimoto, Fuchida, and Genda) were very intelligent men of honor who deserve much more that what this movie portrayed them as.
The defenders of Pearl Harbor (from Admiral Kimmel down to ship's cook Doris Miller) were far more three dimensional and complex than this screenplay would have us believe.
The simple fact is, that as much as the writers and producers ("Hey, we have CG effects. So, what else do we need?") may have attempted a salute to our forebears, the fact is that they have failed us (and more importantly them) in their retelling of history.
Company of Heroes (2013)
Even Alcohol Can't Save This Movie
This is one of those movies that makes me wonder why people spend money on it when there are so many starving children in this world.
The acting is sub-par (on a good day), the script is something I would expect from someone in high school or lower, and the whole production is just painful.
I have seen horror movies with more credibility than this. Why anyone, would spend good money to watch this, let alone produce it, is beyond me.
You'd be better off watching Saw Part 26 then this piece of ill contrived drivel. It insult even one who had anything to do with the second world war, including those not born yet.
The best alternative ending, would have been to line up the production crew against a wall, and shoot them. It insults everyone's intelligence, and and anyone's taste. Please let this die a quite death in some film morgue that no one cares about.
In short, it should be shot in order to put us all out of our misery.
