It Follows (2014)
Cold Open to Beautiful Musical Colors
IT FOLLOWS opens cold & wastes no time showing you the beauty it has in store for the viewers. The concept is simple enough & fresh although it does leave a few questions unanswered in the end allowing fans to discuss the ins & outs of how IT operates. I did truly enjoy this movie but to many situations happen off screen & questionable scenes that seemed to directly contradict the set up or the scene immediately before kept bringing my enjoyment to a halt.
The movie holds its own when it comes to cinematography in its amazing color palette & beautiful wide shots. The music is also an absolute stand out. Great old school slasher-esque with pounding bass to drive home the stalking dread. These were my two highest points from this film as a whole. Closely followed by the overall concept & delivery.
Maika Monroe's character Jay takes over the curse from Jeff Redman played by Jake Weary early on in the movie & we follow her & her closest friends as they try to simply survive IT. Most of the acting here is well delivered with one or two forgettable roles. Maika Monroe is not only the lead but is the stand out performance. Nobody was overwhelmingly bad in their performance.
The Curse can be anywhere & anytime. Watching in the background for the extras brings an easy 2nd viewing. It is consistently building suspense & dread without becoming annoyingly repetitive while bringing you into the groups paranoia filled experiences. When the characters attempt to outsmart IT this sometimes can lead to both great simplistic prevention to completely unexplained set ups with almost no pay off. IT can take MANY forms & on the fly can shift into any desired form to deal with the situation it is facing.
PROS:
Music
Background Suspense/Dread
Color Palette
Overall Concept
CONS:
Off Screen Progression
Forgettable roles
Contradicting Scenes
Chi sei? (1974)
$15 Million Box Office Off The Back of a Superior Film
Yikes. This is really bad.
CONS:
Terrible dialog that is dubbed over the actors
Massive plot holes throughout the movie
Incredibly out of place music
Subpar acting
PROS:
Great trailers
Creepy visuals
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! The trailers are far more entertaining. The only redeeming part of this movie are the creepy visuals that Juliet Mills manages with the assistance of the contacts & makeup. Nothing more.
I wouldn't even consider myself a fan of The Exorcist but this one for sure made every penny of its $15 million box office off the back of a far superior film.
Random Acts of Violence (2019)
A Surprisingly Random Let Down
A solid effort on everyone's part. Not the worst acting, not the worst writing. But there are some issues that kept me from fully enjoying this one. There seemed to be some dramatic character switches that made little to no sense & with those also came such an advancement in the story that I was left confused as to why we were there. Most of the kills are VERY BRUTAL & kept me interested but they themselves are few & far between.
Lead Jesse Williams has some high moments in his acting but I can't help but feel that either the cast or the script around his character let him down. With that said I was highly excited to not only see that Jay Baruchel was in the film but also wrote this movie, sadly his magical comedic touch was nowhere to be found.
I thought this would be so much better, it just fell short in to many areas for me to give this a high review.
Starry Eyes (2014)
Disgusting early on - Awesomely brutal & mind bending in the end.
WOW. Better than I assumed. It was disgusting early on, said a lot about the world of acting before it was a headline. With it being a 2014 film vs post 2017 Weinstein. Awesomely brutal & mind bending towards the end.
The effects were very well done. Gross & sometime to much for me. Had to turn my head at least one time with it touching on my biggest pet peeve for bodily harm in movies.
Alex Essoe (Sarah) absolutely owns this role & stands head & shoulders above everyone else on the screen. Her acting both physically & emotionally were easily the highlights of the film. Amazing to find out she was Wendy Torrence in Doctor Sleep.
This is a movie I'll be watching again down the road. I had to give it a 7 out of 10 just because there are so many weak performances & for it being a little longer than it needed to be. These are not big negatives just things I do take into account at the end of the day. Give this one a watch if you feel you're out of go to movies & want to try something new you shouldn't be let down in the end. GETCHA' PULL!
The Void (2016)
Carpenters THE THING meets a cosmic Barkers HELLRAISER
Look...I waited a few years for this one. Watched it when it originally came out & loved it. Watched it again tonight & loved it. This is an amazing spell binding watch. It wastes no time getting started and does not let up. If you enjoyed Carpenters THE THING or Barkers HELLRAISER hit play. If you love it weird & grotesque hit play. Maybe you're are into movies for make up & practical effects JUST HIT PLAY!! This is a sleeper man, not enough love from the world. Worth the wait 3 years ago and JUST AS GREAT NOW!! GETCHA' PULL!!
Hagazussa (2017)
This One Will Stay With You, IF You Can Make It To The End
This FILM is crippling. It takes a special type of fan to enjoy this one. I personally think it is amazing. I purchased a Blu-Ray as soon as I finished the film. It is NOT for everyone. I do not have words to describe it. Give it a watch. Stay strong so that by the end you have a full grasp on your experience & opinion, weather that be a positive one or a negative one.
Dead Shack (2017)
A Fun Watch..A Weak Finale
The comedy in this movie is fantastic. One you can re-watch a few times for sure. Had me laughing all the way through. 4 of the 6 main cast had great chemistry with their overall dialog. Music also stood out to me. Decent effects. Unfortunately the final moments it kinda fell flat for me. So much build up & than weak acting started building up, weather this was due to the direction the actors were given or how it was done for safety. Soft kills once they were prepared & ready to slay. You should still give it watch. GETCHA' PULL!!
Ruin Me (2017)
A FUN ROMP IN THE WOODS!!
This was a fun one. Good amount of laughs, plot twists & mind blowing. Hit that play button & sit back! 4 skulls GETCHA' PULL!!
Summer of 84 (2018)
Stranger Things this is not. Zero Sci-Fi ALL thriller & killer.
WOW! WOW! WOW! This movie is VERY well crafted. Don't let any of the 'Stranger Things rip off' comments distract you. This is nothing like Stranger Things. Zero Sci-Fi all thriller & killer. Great acting, very funny & an awesome cast. Do not hesitate to hit play on Summer of 84!! CHECK IT OUT!!
In Search of Darkness (2019)
HELL YES! KNOW THE ORIGINALS!
I remember hearing about this one & to finally get access after all this time it was worth the wait. 4 hours of complete passion & love for the greatest genre in film! Not that I had alot of hype going in it is just interviews & opinions but for some one that wasn't born till the late 80s it was great to see such a passion for these early trend setting films. Also a great selection of guests from people that were there to some far more modern voices in horror. A ton of classic films featured but also a ton I hadn't seen or heard to be held in such high regard.
Don't Hang Up (2016)
Peaks & Valleys
I threw this on randomly the other evening. Being a massive fan of SCREAM the killer utilizing the phone to torment the main victims went a long way for me. Some unique moments of trickier from the killer. A great cold opening that has a great full circle moment. Bad acting went both ways it had me laughing but also trying to anticipate ploy twists. I don't think you'll hate it. Press play, CHECK IT OUT!
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Why did I wait 20 years..
Wow, I threw this on last night as I was going to bed..I was not sleeping a wink once I started this movie. I kinda hate myself for sleeping on this movie for the last 20 years!! A great werewolf movie indeed. Hit play you won't regret it.
