The Midnight Club (2022)
Not very haunting
I was expecting a tale of heavy hauntings, ghosts and intrigue. However, what we get here is a very tame, lightweight and forgettable series that is not very scary or memorable. It focuses largely on terminally ill teens living in a possibly haunted hospice, but it soon becomes a rather cliched teen drama about love and loss, rather than something unique and horrifying as seen with Flanagan's previous works.
Most disappointingly is the lack of clear horror and the supernatural. The hospice may be haunted by two elderly phantom figures, that are never explained and only seen by two patients. There is a humanoid shadow that appears when a patient is near death, but again this possible angel of death is never explained. What made his prior haunting series work was the character development of the ghosts (not just the living), allowing for full immersion into the story. The only real horror in this series may be found in the tales these kids tell, but these are often rather hackneyed and uninteresting in nature, even sentimental.
This could have been so much more, but it wasn't. Unsurprisingly, it's been cancelled after only one season, because it lacks reasons to stay interested. I just don't really care about some sadly rather boring teens, even if they are terminally ill.
Paranormal Witness (2011)
Entertaining supernatural horror but profoundly misleading and absurd
This is an entertaining enough supernatural horror series, given that you realise this is fiction, not reality. However, the show deceptively presents these stories as entirely real based on questionable first-hand accounts and anecdotal evidence. There is no second critical opinion presented to scrutinise the often fantastical and downright ridiculous claims made by people in the show, which of course are entirely fabricated. As such, this show will delight the foolish and gullible (see the IMDb review section for several fine examples), but infruriate and stupefy the sceptical and scientific.
Stories in the show include children being harmed by unseen forces, demons manifesting in front of people's eyes, things vanishing into literal thin air, spirit possession, psychic investigators solving crimes, etc. However, anyone with a brain knows all of these things are utterly nonsensical and definitely not real, yet the show wants you to believe everything like an impressionable child. Not one known police case has ever been solved by a psychic investigator. In addition, to present stories about children being attacked by ghosts and demons is disturbing, but for another reason entirely; only living people can harm children. One story (The Long Island Terror) is particularly stupefying; a girl is thrown from a swing by spirits, another is locked in the bathroom by a malevolent presence, and most ridiculously, a girl sees a demon crawl out of her bedroom mirror. Either the people being interviewed are great story-tellers doing it for the camera (and therefore payment) or suffering from psychotic delusion.
RuPaul's Drag Race UK: Strictly Come Snatch Game (2022)
Asian curse strikes again...
Not a very good Snatch Game overall, and it is probably worse than the very poor S3 one. Its failings are down to several factors. One is RuPaul being ignorant of British pop culture and celebrities, meaning he makes two queens (Danny Beard and Jonbers Blonde) change their characters. Making Northern Irish Jonbers switch to an absurd female version of St Patrick, which itself is one large talking Irish stereotype, is a bizarre choice and obviously a scripted one as well. The queens must have multiple prepared choices for Snatch Game, but it would be nice if RuPaul let the queens decide for themselves. Maybe then would more interesting characters be portrayed.
In terms of the Snatch Game, it is fairly boring. Although Cheddar Gorgeous deserved to win with her disgusting Queen Elizabeth I, I found her nervous laugh rather excessive. However others, like the painfully awkward Black Peppa bomb, with her rubbish Lil Nas X, a performance which consists of lame inneundo and a lack of creativity. Her catchphrase should be "me got no comedy!", as that would actually be funny. Le Fil's Marie Kondo is also cringeworthy, with the Asian curse striking again; her single joke is that she cannot understand English. Why queens pick such humourless celebrities for a comedy challenge is frustrating to watch. Plus the very boring Pixie Polite bores with her boring Shirley Bassey.
Having Mel B (grrr!) is not a great choice for the guest judge, since she seems to only make crude commentary (ooh smells like crab paste!). The lip sync between Le Filler and Black me got no comedy Peppa is rather awful; there is no real lip syncing, just excessive, overdone power moves with no coordination or rhythm. Le Filler is rightfully eliminated for taking off too many clothes (although no real nudity is shown), but this is the not the first time Black Peppa bombs a comedy challenge. Sorry me darling, that's Drag Race for you.
RuPaul's Drag Race UK: Yass-tonbury Festival (2022)
Proof that pretty does not equal talent...
The original song the Girl Groups must perform is very average at best, consisting of very cliched lyrics that isn't as memorable as "Break Up Bye Bye" or "UK Hun?". Having a group of six queens each win the challenge seems excessive at best, although each member of the winning group ("Queens of the Bone Age") all do perfectly well in the group performance. Perhaps next time they should split the queens into smaller groups.
However, what is most annoying is two "look queens", Starlet and Sminty Drop thinking a complete lack of performance ability is acceptable for a Drag Race contestant. Starlet looks virtually dead on stage, giving an utterly lifeless and bored performance, along with missing the choreography. Sminty Drop, self-proclaimed "Manchester Mannequin" cannot lip sync to her own lyrics, probably because her lips are so artificially inflated, to the point that she resembles a pufferfish in heavy Bratz doll makeup. Both these queens are utterly vapid and uninteresting; how they expected to do well in Drag Race despite their obvious lack of talent is beyond me, considering performance is a fundamental part of any Drag Race season. Jonbers Blonde is also poor, giving nonsensical lyrics that she too forgets during the performance.
Jonbers and Startlet are the bottom two and Starlet is rightfully eliminated, although I can't help thinking Sminty Drop should have replaced Jonbers, given her dreadful, erratic performance. A star was clearly not born with Starlet.
RuPaul's Drag Race UK vs the World: Snatch Game: Family Edition (2022)
Another one bites the dust...
Nice to see plenty of bitter Pangina fans angry at Baga Chipz for doing well in the competition and winning the Snatch Game, because it's clear they have a poor sense of humour. After all, Pangina's Mariah Carey's impersonation was as dull as dishwater, so the elimination seemed fair. How can she honestly be so shocked to be eliminated when she took part in the competition to begin with? Nobody should be immune from eliminations in a reality television competition.
It's also nice to see Blu Hydrangea win the Snatch Game and do well, as she deserves to stand out. I knew she would likely win the season after this episode aired. The Snatch Game itself is rather average, far from the funniest. Baga Chipz and Blu stand out as the winners, Mo is acceptable, Jujubee's Cher is disposable, and Janey and Pangina are painfully boring.
RuPaul's Drag Race UK vs the World: West End Wendys (2022)
Poor Rusical
Regardless of the controversisal elimination, this was a poor Rusical. The Rusical entirely consisted of individual queens giving individual performance numbers that were all separate to each other, as well as isolated. This meant that there was no opportunity for the queens to perform together in the Rusical. While other Rusicals like the Divas V1 lip sync live from All Stars 3 worked, considering the queens all performed together despite playing individual characters, but this one was a huge disappointment.
While Pangina and Janey did deserve to win, Pangina's sly attitude makes it very difficult to root for her, along with her seeming belief that she should be immune from any future elimination (we'll see how that goes next episode...). At least she gets eliminated in the next episode (Snatch Game) for being too cocky and carrying out shady eliminations herself. While Jimbo's performance in the Rusical is poor, she was one of the few truly interesting queens this season, massively outshining Jujubee, who this season, has prided herself on being utterly lazy and mediocre. This makes Jimbo's elimination rather unpleasant to watch, especially when an underpeforming queen (Jujubee) is saved who does not show any real interest in the competition.
RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under: Snatch Game (2022)
Oh wow...
Part 1, written by Minnie Cooper:
Oh wow! I can't believe all those nasty young drag queens were so horrible to me and made fun of my age! I never said anything to antagonise them, aside from revealing past grievances, bad-mouthing them to RuPaul, arguing with them in the Werkroom...
I know I was super irritating to most of the cast but I can't help being an old, boring, irrelevant, tired has-been with a sense of humour sixty years out of date who constantly wanted to discourage younger, more beautiful competitors like that wretched Beverly! I know my Snatch Game performance as Ellen DeGeneres was a truly terrible impersonation but I at least expected RuPaul to save me, even after my painful clown lip sync due to the fact that I'm old like her! Oh wow, I guess all I can do now is watch Ellen, at least she would understand where I'm coming from, given that she too is a sly, mean-spirited old crone! And I have something to say to that Beverly and the other young cast... I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too!...
Part 2, written by self:
Very entertaining Snatch Game overall that is a significant improvement from the disappointing season 1, topped off with a well-deserved elimination for Minnie Cooper. Hannah Conda impersonates Liza Minelli in an entertaining and lively fashion and gains her the win, which she should be congratulated for, being the second queen to win after portraying Liza (after Alexis Michelle in US season 9). Spankie Jackzon and Yuri Guaii also deserve praise for their strong performances as Barry Humphries (Dame Edna) and Courtney Love, respectively. Minnie Cooper, after having been truly irritating and unpleasant in each episode she competed in, got her rightful comeuppance for her arrogance given her painfully unfunny Ellen DeGeneres impersonation that got her eliminated. Her clown lip sync was cringeworthy, with Beverly Kills' well-done lip sync defeating her. It's clear being sent home by a competitor almost thirty years her junior was a bitter pill to swallow for Minnie Cooper, especially one whom she spitefully attempted to undermine in front of RuPaul, only to issue a grovelling apology once she had been placed in the bottom. Well, good riddance you mean old witch, and try not to melt too much.
RuPaul's Drag Race UK: Catty Man (2022)
Decent improv challenged ruined by hideous lip sync
This was a reasonably funny improv challenge, with most of the queens doing well enough, with Danny Beard undeniably doing the best and rightly winning. However, queens like the wholly vacuous Sminty Drop demonstrate their total lack of comedic talent with painfully lazy performances devoid of material, which is not enjoyable to watch, but in fact cringeworthy. Baby and Le Fil aldo deliver dull performances.
Whilst the overall episode is acceptable (also with a decent runway), the lip sync between Baby and Sminty Drop I found quite shocking. Baby, due to her very revealing costume, strips down to almost complete nudity by removing her garment and twerks her bare arse on stage. This is not professional drag, but cheap, laviscous stripping done purely for shock value. To have the others cheer wildly at this display of flesh was also questionable, considering how a drag queen revealing their boy body in old US seasons would have met with disgust, and rightly so, because drag is supposed to be an illusion. Sminty Drop does not fare much better, as she is unable to dance or lip sync properly due to her inflated lips. Her obvious elimination is not surprising despite Baby's tasteless performance, and badly twerking while exiting is not talent, but is in fact the polar opposite.
Drag queens one would hope should aspire to high standards and maintain a female illusion, not resort to pornographic nightclub stripping. This kind of display is not something someone would expect of the supposedly high-brow BBC. I don't know if I am "old-fashioned maiden", but stripping on television does not impress me.
Love Island (2015)
Morally and culturally appalling
This show is absolutely appalling and diabolical, it should be axed immediately for the good of British television and society. With multiple contestants engaging in substance abuse, developing depression and committing suicide due to the extremely dangerous , exploitative and deeply poisonous effects of this bane, this show is pure evil. The show itself is of abysmally poor quality; it is nothing more than a depressingly narcissistic and spiteful dating show, with no interesting or redeeming qualities whatsoever.
All the contestants are shallow, conceited, desperate, mean-spirited, fame hungry losers who have no real talent or skills in life, but simply desire to be famous and earn money for participating in this trash. The contestants treat other horribly and the challenges themselves encourage nasty behaviour, meaning the show promotes bullying. All the female contestants are treated particularly poorly and abusively by their male "love interests", as well as being exploited and objectified sexually, which is incredibly misogynistic and sexist.
This shows promotes narcissism, laziness and poor moral values among its gullible audience, in particular young people, who would rather aspire to be reality TV stars on terrible reality TV shows, rather than achieve academically or pursue professional career paths. Someone needs to finally incinerate this festering, unholy plague before this infectious virus spreads any further throughout society, with fire to reduce to smoke and ash, which is what it truly deserves. Perhaps once this show has been destroyed, ITV can start producing more intelligent and sophisticated television for viewers to watch, rather than having their brains rotted into mush from watching this utterly diseased bile.
Doctor Who: Arachnids in the UK (2018)
Absolute rubbish
I feel very bad for saying so, but this has to be undoubtedly the worst episode of the Doctor Who in a long while. The episode begins with a very promising and potentially monstrous premise of giant spiders invading Sheffield, but sadly it descends into juvenile and downright frustrating garbage. The dialogue is immature and corny, there is very little action, the spiders themselves are underdeveloped and are not even properly defeated and simply fails to go anywhere and is very dissatisfying. The worst aspect of this episode, is the character of the villainous American businessman "Jack Robertson", who is an obvious, unoriginal and annoying parody of Donald Trump, should in my opinion not been featured at all, and what is worse, he does not even get eaten by the spiders at the end.
We all know Doctor Who have done some excellent social and political commentaries about humanity many times before, such with the last episode "Rosa", but I expected much better than such cheap political posturing portrayed in this episode. It is a shame because I am very fond of Jodie Whittacker's very likeable and eccentric portrayal of the Doctor, and her companions are also good characters with potential, but unfortunately I am very disappointed with such childish rubbish. Hopefully, the next episode will be much better than this.
