As a lover of fantasy, and child of Tolkein fans I loved it, it's a shame about the reception.
6 December 2022
First of all I marked it down by 2 because of the elves short hair, and lack of glow. I do hope they fix that. Other than that the cinematography was great and i did like the overall story they were getting across, it's a world away from Tolkein, more like a re-imagining. But to translate to TV they needed to put in some surprise elements, or else it would have been a paint by numbers. I wish Galadriel diplomacy was better since she is a future Queen and thousands of years old, but I think the diminishing numbers of the elves and the weakening powers explain their brashness and lack of glow, hopefully the rings will amend this. And I hope her slight knock of confidence gives her back her grace. Halbrand is the most fascinating character (spoiler) his twist was expected to a lore follower, but I approve of this version since he would appeal to a casual viewer and anybody who likes the ordinary folk in GoT (I get glimpses of that) I do wish we spent more time in the forge, so I'm hoping season 2 will have 'Sauron's perspective.' We need more Sauron, and a gentler wiser Galadriel, then I'll be all in. My dad agrees, needs tweaking, If it weren't for the effects and the atmosphere my mum wouldn't have had a sniff, but she has a new heartthrob.

I still enjoyed this movie.
13 June 2019
I've learnt to take critics with a pinch of salt. When they or an audience member with too many expectations harpoons something, I just shrug and say; 'My turn.' and go see it to be able to critique for myself. ( I don't always read reviews since sometimes I see the movie on the release date) When I went in, I was a little excited (for the hype, and Sophie Turner) but quelled my enthusiasm because this was coming off the back of Apocalypse, which wasn't the best, but the Quicksilver sequences were amazing. Anyway, dark phoenix opened in an avant garde fashion, instead of the CGI department blowing their load on the title sequence, they put up a test card style title which to me expressing drama and substance. We did get drama, and the pacing was fine, digestable. I've given up with the time-line but I accept this is the final and legit-line I'm willing to follow. But I kind of wish Mystique wasn't made the poster girl and the hero of the previous films, since she is supposed to a strong dark mysterious character that is a 'henchwoman'/ assassin, not a mentor/ blue saviour. Her death came, not unexpected, since- duh- the trailer, and duh- Jennifer lawrence wanted out of the franchise pronto. Her death was vital, because not only did it add to the motivation of the characters around her, therefore amping up the drama. But her death was a sweet release (to the film)since her character had become redundant, and seeing Miss Lawrence screaming behind her beautiful oscar -winning stoic face 'I want out of my contract!' you can't really route for someone who doesn't want to be there. A relief indeed. The handsome cast are distracting, and the tension/bromance between magneto and Professor X is a joy, I can hear the typing of thousands of fanfiction on the verge of being uploaded. The action scenes speckled in the production are works of art, and have surely been made for laptop 'wallpapers' and trailer service (remember wonder woman in batman vs superman, anyone?) But still good in their entirety and context. Train sequence was the best. Really wished this movie had more Jean Grey as well as her alter-ego, this is her movie, and I'm pretty sure her role equated to 30 mins, well her CGI hair must have been a headache, but beautifully crafted. Sophie Turner's acting has vastly improved. So what I take away from this movie is quiet satisfaction and a soundtrack that I will definitely download. Why are people describing it as the worst film ever? Who knows? Too many expectations, I think the evolution of the audience is to blame, they are either too-refined, or are in desperate need of titillation(casual nudity), and exploding heads. Lower your expectation and just watch the damn movie as if you are channel surfing, and enjoy.

Venom (2018)
9/10
Was hyped, read the critics, seen the movie anyway- loved it
17 October 2018
I'm not one to take critic responses as gospel, they've been off before, and on this occassion it all a matter of opinion. I came out of the movie theatre sated. All movie suits different tastes. And I was in the mood for a horror/sci-fi/action just before halloween. It was a hero/ villian origin story perfect for the avengers haitus. I was never bored- in fact I didn't want to go to the toilet. Plus it has Tom Hardy, whose magnitism can carry every scene (Kudos on the bike riding skills). Yes, Im a fan girl, for his acting and it was on point( To go from swag to vulnerable to manic is a delight to see. The CGI wasn't bad, so it wasn't distracting. Venom himself was menacing, I kind of wish they had made him even more menacing, but I suppose they had to fit the '15' rating (I'm from the UK), the comic aspects came from the dynamic between Eddie ad Venom, which at times went from intense to whimsical (funny but it took away some of the edge- unless your into that kind of thing). I suppose that is my only critism. His love interest (and her boyfriend) was actually quite helpful, her involvement was crucial in the final act (shame about her wig).

At the end of the day, great popcorn munching movie, it's best to go in with medium expectations so you can be mildly surprised it's a decent piece of entertainment. Would recommend.

Something new and something old works. Win!
6 July 2015
You have to except that any story put in the public domain, is fair game, it can be manipulated or bent to the will of the director, or story teller, it never undermines the creator but flatters them. And it doesn't render the other films obsolete, they're still there. The story can be told many times, or it can be changed. It's the love and intrigue for the characters that helps us tolerate these paradoxes. I'm a fan of the 1st cause it scares the crap out of me, the second is my favourite- far fetched- but I love it, liquid man, a kid in mortal danger, new improved sarah 'Hamilton' connor- ace. My next new favourite; Genisys.

Time travel is a trope- it feeds fanfictioners. I love how they explore the paradox that is the terminator timeline. The writers are giving us a complicated puzzle of a storyline to solve, then they give you a logical explanation that does make sense. You get a bit of fanservice- teases from previous films, faithful reshoots, one liners- and hints they are about to make a reference then suddenly do something new to keep you on your toes. For example, instead of a T-1000 collecting a cast off with his shoe, he leans out of a moving vehicle and picks it up rather simply with his hand. Another event explored, is the miracle of magnetism fields- and how they crop up in all sorts of places.

The cast are fresh new talent mixed with an iconic actor/ character. This pleases me, because not only is the interaction different, the story has changed which mean the relationships are definitely going to be interesting. Seeing two people who are meant to fall in love, and watch them get pissy about it. Or revealing terminators can learn how to feel over time.

You also get the scenes people have be crying out to see, the actually time machine and prep before time travel. I was giddy that it had been shown and can be filed in the franchise. You gonna see more than one travel sequence. And you get a better cityscape in a nuclear war- with crisp effects and a towering atmosphere- reminiscent of the matrix 'real world' you don't want a dry desert apocalypse- 'salvation or fury road has given us, you want wet concrete and bloodied metal with retro military gear, and night time battles. And a revelation that Kyle Reese was born after the war meaning he would have no idea what a restaurant or waitress is, let alone dating.

The action is occasionally original, but likes to give classic ' I'm hiding but it didn't work' and I'm stuck inside something thats about to plummet- grab my hand' But it's all so fluid you have no doubt that it would indeed happen if you ending up feeling from a cyborg and members of homeland security. Because ignorant people are a threat too.

With have a new John Connor- who is actually like a new character but with a familiar name. I have no problem with this, that is a meaty role that has been fleshed out, but it is very out of character. Sure that second trailer gave away the big spoiler, which was annoying, but if they dropped it on you in viewing the actual film, would you have dropped your popcorn and gone '*beep* no, they can't do this.' Maybe. A chance was took, now you take the chance and see this surprisingly stunning movie, the effects have been improved since the release of the 1st trailer. The CGI in genisys has put salvation to shame. No flat looking young arnie gurning at the screen, but a realistic rendering.

I went in with moderate expectations and walked out on a high. Stick around for the mid credit scene.

It's a little gem for Robert Patrick fans
7 February 2015
This is actually a good film, don't let the dodge music fool you. It may have a weird plot about relic hunting and saving the world, but it has good action sequences and a young Robert Patrick who is pretty cute, and features throughout the film. This is certainly a good role for a first timer in a movie (yes his first role ever), he has so much energy and charisma. The fights scenes are quite well done on such a low budget, 'Patrick' does it realistically with vigour. It may be cheesy when it comes to plot and music but it's the 80s. I would have certainly been entertained in the 80s, it is reminiscent of other classic 80s adventure/action films, you'll see what I mean. If they had tinsy bigger budget and better recording equipment this would have been box office magic. But I believe the film would have done well if more people had bothered to see it. The film has only aged because it has been overlooked. But it's a little gem for Robert Patrick fans- I watched this all the way through with a delighted grin on my face hence the high-ish rating.

Holy Musical B@man! (2012 TV Movie)
'StarKid are kicking it up a notch!'
19 April 2012
Every production gets better and better in standard. From the lighting, to music, to costume. But the very first performance as I can recall from 2009- 'A Very Potter Musical' which takes a friendly and hilarious stab at J K Rowling's Harry Potter, was a brilliant introduction to the team behind the charismatic and overly talented starkid.

'HMB' set the scene in a noir comic book loyal setting. With a spirit- lifting 80s soundtrack. The pace is good, and refined for a contemporary and grown-up audience. The music you will walk around humming to for weeks, and kick-ass characters that you will crush on for years to come. Though the play is missing some familiar faces, you are blinded by the brilliance of others, especially with starkid newcomer 'Jeff Blim' as the Jim Carrey-esque 'Sweet Tooth'- and he certainly makes the character his own.

For those of you who are profoundly disturbed or adore the dynamic but ambiguously gay duo- Batman and Robin, you will take this play like a piece of candy.

OMG- If you are a fan of swift justice- watch, but with caution.
5 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Liam Neeson packs a punch- this guy can do everything. This is an incredible film which documents the gruelling lengths a loving and 'specially skilled' father will go through to get their child back safe. It's one of those films you have to watch with caution and with a pinch of salt- the subject matter is dark, one of the darkest I have ever seen. Think of the worse crime in the world, the worse thing you could do- to me this film hit an issue that scares me to no end. You see human trafficking in the newspapers and grit your teeth with anger. This film will give you satisfaction for the violence brought onto the perpetrators.

The flow of the film is good,it sets the characters up quickly, shows the disrupted family unit; the spoiled but loving child, rich (thinks he's god)step-father, and bitch (happy families) mother, and of course...the protagonist; the biological father with a secret past.

The film was a thrill ride the rest of the way through- your suspicions as the film goes along turns to everybody, and following the protagonist 's techniques on tracking is fast, flawless and (how justice should be done)- if they're bad- kill them, if they have answers- torture them...no cushy lawyers necessary.

And we are given a more or less happy ending- to that particular family. But the issues brought up are still out that - pause for thought.

What good is a film when all characters are annoying- and all the writers are sex crazed.
2 January 2012
Sure it's an 80s movie, but it still has the technical process of the 60s and 70s- plus the shameless over use of slow-mo during all the actions scenes- which would have perked up the movie. There is hardly any new direction in this movie, meaning the actors were told to just play the character how they are written, which fits into every single version ever made of Tarzan - they don't do anything new.

Basically the (male)writers watched and copied every annoying film were there's an annoying damsel in distress who appears inadequate at everything apart from pretending to be virginal while playing hard to get and getting into Tarzan's pants.

Plus despite all the woman has been through she still manages to keep all her make-up on, didn't know they had waterproof mascara in those days.....

Tarzan again is a hairless ape- there's no such thing as facial hair in the jungle it seems.

The father was the best part of the movie apart from when he's made to say erotic things which are later copied by the daughter after all it is an erotic film made by men and for men.

Toast (2010 TV Movie)
Warm, Sweet, but main character lacks like-ability
5 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The film was well paced, the characters were laid out simply. The film is a satisfying drama entwined with a cookery ideas class which will make your mouth water. My only complaint is this may be the only biographical film where you are not keen on the lead character, who can't help but be put across on screen as a stubborn teenager that doesn't think outside the box, he maybe a kid with a set agenda but he never seems grow beyond his character, the only thing that grows is his cooking ability and maybe is sexuality. But he is anything but sweet. Instead he holds a life long grudge against someone who doesn't deserve it.

Tormented (I) (2009)
Weak
18 July 2011
Weak script and storyline, not much to keep you hooked, easy to follow. A few creeps and laughs. I have no idea what type of audience this is for...maybe for guys who have a kink for school uniforms because they were the most unconvincing bunch of school-kids ever, I hate modified uniforms made to look like they were from a porn movie or St Trinians. And as far as I know thigh high socks, fashion tights, mini skirts and huge earrings are banned from schools...pi-sh, plus the fact they are too old. And probably the first rule when making any sort of film is character sympathy...I didn't warm to any of the characters, apart from Justine(poor girl) so who cares if anything happens to them?

Quite addictive.
31 October 2010
For a web series, it's quite addictive. I'd watch one and be thrown into the next episode, then pretty soon the next series.

The Characters are roughly well established, each on a different level of obsession that makes most of them annoying, and at the same time question your own sanity because you are aware you could easily be like them....'due to the fact you watching it online in the seclusion of your own room'

You learn the traits of every character, and find them predictable when it comes to upcoming scenarios...though one character leaves you wondering how the does an attractive trendy person like you end up trapped in your own room?

Two characters you will come across you will take an instant dislike to, immediately (you will know who I mean) But continue to watch to see how others cope with them.

Not to be missed
21 October 2010
This show is a gem, though it could easily slip under the radar, with the time and place it's broadcast....so look it up.

The characters are established in the first episode, meaning whose the darker one, or the smarter one. But I can say it doesn't follow that particular formula, they're both relatively smart and witty, and they both can be dark, strangely enough the smarter and moralist one of the pair seems to have a darker side. Though the carefree dumbed-down one is slightly cynical. There partnership can go in any direction which is the appeal with most programmes, though what makes it interesting is they are not two singletons thrown together; one is married and the other single and proud.

The cases though not exactly 'Sherlock calibre' they are smart and flow, and leave me surprised at every new turn....meaning the 'Oh yes...but of course.' moments.

The acting is good, the comedy good, the drama good. The number of episodes.....needs more.

Sherlock (2010–2017)
10/10
Pleasantly surprised...and eager.
15 October 2010
When I picked up on the trailer, I was at first sceptical, at first glance you see a modern environment and noir looking characters and you wonder will they pull it off or will they have scratched the classic.

Well I'm happy to say I've just finished watching it for the 8th time, and I can't get enough of it, I'm now obsessed. The make over works wonders, it throws you into a classic partnership with a hint of CSI. The characters are well developed, but still have some premise and mystery to keep you questioning, especially Sherlock played by the talented Benedict Cumberbatch who is referred to as a 'Socio-path', which adds more to the lure of the sleuth, not only that but he is damn sexy even if the character is sometimes callous, not to mention the casual dark horse, Martin Freeman....who is growing on me.

It has also allowed me to shine a light on actors I have never paid much attention to before, and I'm so glad it was this programme which introduced me, and knowing that the writers of doctor who were the shippers made it magical!!

I will sleep well tonight.

Wonderful
3 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
A story which contains the most beautiful fairy-tale kind of characters such as; a handsome kind hearted soldier, a passionate pretty girl, a stern grumpy father, and a eccentric grandpa. A perfect blend for a spicy and yet slow romance.

I think it is a wonderful film, well sorta a chick flick, men will enjoy it too I suppose, but I suggest the watcher should be patient since it takes Paul (Keanu) the whole of the film to realise what woman he is destined for- for the rest of his life. Also don't get irritated by the coincidental appearance of the mysterious girl, because she is important.
