Foundation: Creation Myths (2023)
Solid sci-fi at last
The only reason I persevered with season 1 is the fine visual design and the story of the Cleons. The rest seemed rather flat and poorly thought out.
Season 2 felt like it was going even further downhill, but the final 3 episodes really had some true quality in the story, script and characters. If they can keep to this last part of the season's quality, in the next season then I'll definitely be watching. There was some real emotional gravity, especially in the character of Demerzel and the true nature of her relationship with Empire. It's not quite Asimov's story but it could finally start living up to it.
Foundation (2021)
Visually amazing but otherwise dull
The customer designers deserve recognition and the look of the sets and FX is great. Unfortunately the plot is formulaic and barely represents Asimov's vision. The acting is predominantly weak, aside from Jared Harris, Lee Pace and Cassian Bilton, but the corny script lets it all down.
It's attempts at having ethnic representation backfires as well, with a few roles seemingly based on worn stereotypes. Apple sure isn't doing too well with its shows overall?
Watchmen: It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice (2019)
Pleasant surprise, so far so good
As a fan of the comic, I didn't really like the film and thought "nice try, but Alan Moore is right: it's unfilmable". So I thought the series would be another souless cash-in. But the tone, alternate universe setting and the Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross soundtrack kept me involved in the episode and I'm definitely interested in seeing where this heads. Even if Alan Moore hates it, I'm willing to give this a chance.
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Another weak manga adaptation
The original story has plenty of raw material to make a superb action sci-fi live action movie. Instead it's formulaic, uninspiring and the dialogue reaffirms that James Cameron should never be allowed near a script. Ever. The Motorball scene was great though.
