Sentimental, Contemplative and Ironic
14 December 2008
Iosseliani is a truly controversial figure of film making; You either like his films or fell asleep watching them. No in betweens. Having only minimal traditional narrative or story telling clichés, the film manages to illustrate true emotions without being bombastic or over-sophisticated. Doing this by showing everyday people who are only drifting with the waves of life, wishing to get away from their existence. There's a slight sarcasm involved in the portrayal of how everyone is unhappy with what he/she has and wants to be like the other who wants to be like him , and vice versa.(Really sharp.)However, Itt all ends up in positive, placing emphasis on the need for seeking personal freedom and finding hope and refugee in true friendship, in a plastic, greedy, selfish world.

Personally, i think it has one of the most touching end sequences in film history.

"One with true insight may be enough"

It seems that Roberto Begnini can't go wrong when it comes to comedy. In a way, he might be the last / only great comedian of our times, who writes, acts, and (usually)directs films at the same time. He alone keeps alive this classic tradition of films, which genre's rules are invented and perfected by such greatness's as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, not to mention director giant Federico Fellini. This one is also a warm-hearted, humane, and really funny, which gives an unusual yet very likable mix, especially in times of so-called humorous films with endless quantities of stupid fart jokes and toilet humor. There might be some flaws however, but none too disturbing. Recommended!

yes this is a great and unique piece of film making very original with good acting and directing. because of the poor translation i didn't understand all of the jokes and i am sure that i miss some good ones. all in all this movie is great but far not flawless. my vote is seven because of the lack of lovable characters(there aren't any )the figures presented in this movie are very one-sided.this makes the film hard to like not like Kusturica's movies. anyway i recommend the film to those who likes eastern-European movies and loves grotesque films don't watch this film if you like warm, emotional (i mean positive emotions) films with heroes and with character development

brilliant effort

I have to argue with other comment writers(such as the guy from Florida) because i really think that this film is very good what we have here is a touching drama and a comedy of an extraordinary life we have Geoffry Rush with a flawless performance as Sellers and as other key characters(which is also a great idea) we have some behind the scenes info about some famous film makers we have a nice entertaining two hours Thanx to Geoffry Rush's brilliant performance the film presents the very essence of who Sellers was: A controversial genius its highly recommend to anyone interested in Sellers or to anyone who have good taste in movies not recommended to those who like melodramatic syrupy Hollywood movies
