U-571 (2000)
Not worth seeing
This "movie" is no worth seeing. Historical errors are the stars, Special Effects are ludicrous, and the acting of the cast is repulsive. Pistols with endless rounds of bullets, machine guns which only wound or kill the bad guys, commandos who board a German ship without knowing a word of German language, torpedoes that miss their targets. etc. This is not a movie about a historical fact, but only a low quality adaptation of a novel. It isn't even a comedy. It doesn't deserve the qualification of "1" but there is no possible way to give it a negative value. My advice: If this is the only movie to see, switch the TV off and grab a good book. At least the later is an environment-friendly attitude.
War of the Worlds (2005)
A waste of film and resources with no creativity at all
First of all, I do apologize for rating this movie with a "1". This is due to the lack of zeroes or negative values in the scale
Spoilers follow
The acting is ludicrous, Tom Cruise is not fit for the role, He does not look like a normal person who has witnessed the beginning of an alien invasion. The special effects are also pathetic. After the EMP created by the "lightning storm" the phones are out, the cars are out of order, yet the camcorder of the witness and the digital cameras still work. And on top of it, the car taken by Cruise is the only one working.
The cameramen worked as if they were shooting a prehistoric film, making all scenes based on gigantic close-ups and switching back and forth between two characters when there is a conversation, with no knowledge at all of panoramic shooting.
This is a perfect example of the lack of imagination at the producing companies in present times.
All the work producers and directors do is a) Seize an old classic b) Keep the title c) Discard the script d) Get known actors for the cast e) Ask them to create their scenes and dialogs f) Add enough gore and/or violence and/or nudity and/or sex to get an "R" rating g) Blend all ingredients together h) Wait until the product is finished i) Hope it is accepted by the audience
If all the above are achieved, up to this point we find:
Creativity work= Zero Acting skills= not needed Director's work= minimal Original story= not followed Crew= responsible for most of the expenses Budget= kept at minimum Outcome= a spoof of the original or an insult to the original cast and crew
If the economic balance shows profit, the next step is: j) start filming the sequels keeping the same cast if possible, with the same M.O.
And add this two items I) hope to receive any award II) ask the critics to be lenient
I wonder what would the original cast and crew say after seeing this movie, provided they can stand to watch it in full without closing their eyes and/or covering their ears.
Personally, when this movie or its equivalent is shown, I switch my TV off, or play any good original version on my VCR or Laser disc player.
Addenda: These movies should have the word "REMAKE" after the title whenever they are screened to alert the audience it is not the original
Long live the original versions Down with the "remakes"
S.W.A.T. (2003)
Do not see this movie
Really a waste of time, and not even worth listening to the soundtrack with your eyes shut. I do still remember the Original Show of 1975 - 1976. Saying this was based on it only can be believed by those who did not see the original. I thought Samuel Jackson was a great actor, but having taken part in this "remake" makes me doubt he is capable of choosing the projects submitted to him and taking the good ones. I don't even consider the possibility of a woman belonging to a SWAT team. I still believe that women should not be exposed to the dangers of this kind of police work.I haven't seen anything more disgusting than the scene of the limo chasing the executive jet and the fight in the railways.
My score of 1 is due to the fact that there are no Zero or negative values on the scale. Awful is an overrating
The Andromeda Strain (2008)
Do not think it is a remake
This is not even a remake of 1971 original film. I was preparing to see a good movie when I saw the title, but after 5 minutes I grabbed the Remote control and switched the TV off. There is no real connection with the original film.
I am hoping IMDb creates a voting scale including Zero and negative values to rate these "productions" (should be read "destructions") with misleading titles.
If I were the writer of the original novel, I would certainly ask not to be named in the credits
Overall Rating: By far, the WORST ever seen (mathematically the value would be tending to minus infinite)
Reccomendations: Check release date before planning to see this title If it reads 1971 it's OK, if it is 2008, do not waste your time.
28 Weeks Later (2007)
Not worth seeing
The worst film I have ever seen. Typical English camera work, focusing on the character speaking or acting, and very few panoramic shots. Unrealistic special effects. Just plain disgusting scenes, not frightening at all.
I thought this movie would have been better if the camera stood still for one minute at a time and not moving to a different angle every two frames.
Please, do not lose your time seeing it. It is not worth while. In my opinion my vote is overrating. This kind of filming deserves a "0" as a rating
Lost in Space (1998)
New Version against Original Version
I saw this film today on Cable TV, and I found it really disappointing. I hoped to see something better than a cheap copy of an old script which was a hit when I saw it on TV. But what I saw was a nonsensical story based on an old Sitcom. I am not against sequels following a hit performed by the same actors, and written by the same people, but to try to refresh an old story using different actors is merely a proof that new writers and directors are not intelligent enough to create a new story from scratch. Or maybe writers and directors of the past were simply better. Either way, this kind of remake is just a sample of the decadence of the movies industry, where no new ideas are brought to the screen, and that it is cheaper and requires less imagination to bring back to life something which was great forty years ago, not taking into account that we (spectators) have memory, and the ability to compare the original with a cheap copy. My rating is a 2/10.
John Q (2002)
A movie full of suspense and meant to open your eyes
A very well cooked thriller, with every necessary ingredient, and a plot meant to surprise the viewer.
Full of love, passion, family issues, commercial interests and politics all blended into a magnificent work of art topped with Denzel Washington's performance The film shows many aspects of life, and should be seen by all people to evaluate one's point of view on each of the parallel stories depicted.
The Author takes an everyday situation and sows the seed of self - criticism in every spectator, making this more than a thriller to pass the time away.
The Director plays with the characters as a Master would play his pieces on a chessboard, giving each actor enough role and having a defined objective: to checkmate the audience, and I must say he does this with very few elements, mainly dialog sequences and very few Special effects, thus turning this film into a masterpiece.
Denzel Washington is the perfect choice for this film, due to his ability to play poker face situations, and his ability to play any kind of character he is offered.
I do highly recommend this movie, to see it two, three or more times. Every time one sees the film, gets a new detail to one's collection and a new question to answer. Ideal for family discussion and highly recommended for teenagers
Haunts of the Very Rich (1972)
Excellent Thriller from beginning to end
A very dramatic thriller, a movie that leaves you thinking whether the end can be a possibility in the world we are living, either to believers or non-believers. Filmed with very few FX, and very good scenery, just the necessary dialogs and a plot that seizes you and keeps you stuck to the screen till the end credits. If it can be found it is a collector's item that should be in a collector's shelf. Performing actors are very well chosen and masterly directed to comply with the script requirements. The audience can see many resemblances to known people, living or dead, in each of the characters; and, why not, see their own lives partially or totally depicted in one or more of the characters.
Special Bulletin (1983)
Excellent movie, Great acting and staging
Excellent movie, keeps the audience stuck to the TV set. I first saw this picture during one of my trips to USA. I was zapping and I tuned a TV station that was showing this program. As it had no advertising, I thought it was for real and that I was looking at a live show of a TV news broadcast. It wasn't until the end of the movie that I realized it was fiction. Good fiction and I think it caused the same effect that Orson Welles obtained with his radio broadcast of the "War of The Worlds". I do advice anyone having the possibility to get a copy on VHS or DVD of this film to do so, it is a masterpiece of Cinema and ought to be considered among the best films ever made.
