We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
TLDR
I watched this movie mostly because of recommendations. However, after the first ten minutes, I found myself skipping some minutes to get to the "interesting" parts. We all know the chore: the parents see the first signs, hope it's a phase, it escalates, tragedy happens. Still, the devil is in the details, and it does show in this movie, especially given the great performances of Tilda (as always) and Ezra.
Problem is... aparently the director decided she hadn't enough material, so she resorted to a non-linear timeline, which is great if your object is to keep the pace interesting. But what happens is totally the oposite. There is a lot (and I mean A LOT) of the mother dealing with the consequences, and reflecting, and doing her things, and... isn't it supposed to be about Kevin?
Maybe the whole point was to take a different approach, and focus on Eva... I don't know, maybe change the title to something like "How I feel about Kevin". Either way, the way it was presented didn't work out for me.
But the "main plot" is really gut-wrenching.
Ghost Wars (2017)
Nice building, lacking a proper sending
Started with a lot of potential. A scientific experiment opens the door to the afterlife, bringing back "ghosts" who would make people mad so they would commit suicide, and these "ghosts" could snatch their bodies.
Maybe if they kept at that, it would probably be less disappointing. However, all the hints at a greater plan, the "baby", Roman's mother and "girlfriend", so many expectations that would lead to answers that would be disappointing or none at all. Felt like there was some Stephen King/Lovecraft inspiration, but was cut short because of budget. The visuals and directing were ok. Some good acting, but mostly Vicente D'Onofrio carrying it IMO.
