must see!!
31 March 2005
A tragically wonderful movie... brings us to a Japan that does not exist anymore. Despite Hollywood's technical expertise, I have yet to see a (hollywood) movie that can match the authenticity of the atmosphere in this small town by the river near the sea... Tom Cruise's The Last Samurai looked liked the last installment of the Lord of The Rings in trying to capture rural Old Japan.

If you like serene but intense story lines, this is a must see film. It will be a respite from hollow flashy films much like the last 1000 blockbusters you saw. I think this is one of Kurosawa's better stories.

Even if it's a movie about geishas and brothels and the complicated rules that govern life in such settings, it did not turn into a skin flick. The characters are full of depth and act with much intensity.

The Red Suit (1997)
not to miss
12 January 2005
Our country has not yet developed a consciousness for good films, so when i saw "The Red Suit" in a mini-film fest in the country's biggest mall there were just about seven people in the entire theater. Snobbish critics may comment on the film's faults or shortcomings, but films are not made for them, they are made for the average person on the street, just like me, and i find no fault. One thing happened at the end of the movie though, all seven (or less) of us gave it a spontaneous standing ovation, and I never saw something like that ever since. The story is simple but it touches something inside you... You shelled out money to watch something made by an obscure director (never heard of him or the entire cast) in almost zero budget (by Hollywood standards)with a title based on a garment seen only about four times in the movie. But it makes you happy....

The Diary (1999 TV Movie)
8/10
quite good actually!
12 January 2005
I was on my once a week DVD hunt one night, had to do it fast because it was getting late, after scanning about 500 titles in three different stores, i saw this single solitary DVD on a lonely shelf... it had a synopsis of about two sentences and a PG rating! I can only buy one DVD so i passed over it and browsed on to others, when all the rest of the titles were Hollywood crap, i came back to buy it because it had a butterfly on the cover. When i watched it at 2AM... GASP! the guy who put a PG rating on the cover ought to be hanged! the entire opening credits alone was worth two NC-17 ratings! Not much story but have good production values, nice soundtrack, and pretty women! Up until this film I thought the Brits depended upon the French for erotic entertainment...

Was the film from the UK?
