The Good Doctor: Forgive or Forget (2021)
Just dull, with awful direction.
This episode is one of the dullest in an already poor fourth season. The ridiculous notion that in America, Shaun and Lea couldn't get another campsite anywhere is already stupid, but then we have another fight between Glassman and his incredibly annoying wife. It's just space filler at this point, with little story important enough to care about.
At this point it's bad enough, but the direction is woeful. Every character talking has the back or side of another character looming in the foreground. IN EVERY SHOT. We sat there, eventually hooting with laughter at how bad it was...at least that made it somewhat more entertaining, but for all the wrong reasons.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
Ultimately throwaway episode
Always seems to be something they do in American shows. A throwaway side story episode. Ultimately frustrating when you just want to see further progression in the story. I understand what they were going for as an homage, but I'm unfamiliar with the source material and thus must appear ignorant. It felt very out of place, rather boring and not at all believable. A disappointment and a waste of Beard's character. Filler. Next time, shorten the series by one episode please.
Sincerely Louis CK (2020)
The edge is now unpleasant.
There's something about an edgy comic that always attracts, but when it comes down to the simple fact that an edgy comic also has an unpleasant side to them, the effect isn't as awesome. It's one thing laughing at risqué jokes from the standpoint that we're all in this together and all generally decent people finding in humour that is perhaps non pc, but when it's being peddled by someone that has admitted to offensive acts and is trying to shrug it off to some extent...it doesn't work.
I was a huge fan of Louis and I was surprised when I learned that he had a new standup movie. I was interested to see how someone would attempt to recover from these previous indiscretions and decided to make a visit to his site to purchase the special.
It really is standard Louis and appears a bit forced. Going out of his way to push your buttons. Except now, there's a tinge of something uncomfortable at the side. He attempts to somewhat face up to what he did and the audience were obviously all on his side and ready to lap it up. It was amusing, cringeworthy and self deprecating. But only because it had to be. And therein lies the problem....you don't know where the act ends and the raw soul underneath begins. It lacks honesty, because now we can't rely on Louis' previously well honed 'heart on his sleeve' shtick. It doesn't feel real anymore. He had a talent for sharing himself, but it now feels as if the rug has been yanked from beneath us. Shame.
The Mr. Men Show (2008)
A complete disgrace to the source material
I grew up watching, reading and being read the original Mr Men show. With two little ones now, I wanted to share the experience with them. They are utterly entranced by the stories and original artwork and we listen to the sublime Arthur Lowe Audiobooks in the car. This reimagining takes all the nuances and subtle humour and completely trashes it. I believe it to be an American although we get the British dubbed version. It's brash, dim witted, in your face and completely infantile. Misses the point completely and I'm glad they stopped making it. Truly awful. Three stars as the kids seem to be distracted by the fast action, but they miss out on the charm.
