Inferno (2016)
I was left with a big 'Why?'
That sums up pretty much my feeling for the entire film. Why it had to be so complex on things and situations that could have been easily explained in the most simple of ways.
Why Langton had to be involved in the story in such a ultra-complex way in the first place? Why did Zobrist had to die in order to execute his plan? Why did all parties who were concerned on the issue of the 'deadly virus' meet their camps through a ridiculous maze of events that the only thing they achieve is to confuse the viewer rather than to excite him or even intrigue him? And to prevent the reaction of those who have read the book, I'll tell you that I also have read the 'Da Vinvi Code' and the 'Illuminati', and even if I think that 'Illuminati' was a better book than DVC, I regard the latter one to be brought way better on screen. So I'm quite certain that you can make a good movie on a 'not so good' book or even on a ' a priori' complex book story.
I won't lie.At the beginning of the film, I saw potential. It was the flow and the extreme peculiarity of the events that in the end left me with a bitter taste that covered the undoubtedly 'artistic' aura and the - always fascinating - Dante references and backstory.
5/10 and I know it will sound 'cliche', but I regard the first movie as the best out of this trilogy.
Hotarubi no mori e (2011)
A truly rare gem
This film is the epitome of 'short yet full' way of telling a story. It is about childhood, and the difficulties of being alone as a kid.It uses an extraordinary almost ethereal character to guide the girl - and the audience - through the one way travel of growing up and the lessons you learn along the way.It explores a child's view on mortality, love, and friendship all in one.
Finally, it is about leaving childhood behind and moving on while keeping the memories alive either happy ones or sad ones. It's an unmissable experience that will leave you with a sweet yet nostalgic feeling. Its a masterpiece in every aspect.
