Bambi (1942)
One of Disney's All-Time Best
This is easily one of Disney's all-time best films. It's simple, yet very moving. The artistry of it is stunning. But I think the best thing about this movie is the music. Music plays an important part in any Disney film, but I think it works the best in this one. "Little April Shower" is great, as is "Let's Sing a Gay Little Spring Song". But I think the best song in this is "Love is a Song". It captures the essence of the film. Every time I hear it, I feel as if I'm walking through the forest and I hear the singer's voice far off in the distance and I'm walking towards it, trying to find it. That's when a song works in a movie. I love this movie, and I love that song.
The Muppets Go to the Movies (1981)
Should get way more recognition
Why doesn't this get as much recognition as "The Muppet Movie"? I think it's just as good! This and "The Frog Prince" are the two most underrated Muppet features ever. If you can, see it! It's awesome!
Basically it plays out like an episode of "The Muppet Show". With special guest stars Dudley Moore and Lily Tomlin, the Muppets do their own versions of such movies as "The Wizard of Oz", "Casablanca", and "The Three Musketeers". It's very funny!
Both Dudley Moore and Lily Tomlin have their moments. Dudley's best is when he plays Ceasar. Lily's best is when she plays four or five people in a parody of a war movie (I don't know which).
Like I said before, if you can see it, do so. If you like the Muppets, see it. You won't be disappointed.
The Blues Brothers (1980)
Nothing like it
"The Blues Brothers" is one of the great American comedies. This level of hilarity can never be captured again.
The movie begins with Jake Blues (John Belushi) getting released from prison and the corrections officer (Frank Oz) gives him back his trademark hat and sunglasses. His brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) picks him up in the new Bluesmobile--an old police car. They go to visit Mother Mary Stigmata (Kathleen Freeman) who owns an orphanage in downtown Chicago. She tells them that because she cannot pay the taxes, the orphanage will be closed. The Blues Brothers are heartbroken because they grew up in the orphanage. Their friend Curtis (Cab Calloway) encourages them to get the old Blues Brothers Band back together. The Blues Brothers are on a "mission from God" to save the orphanage. Jake and Elwood scour the state of Illinois to look for them all and the finally get them all back together. On the way, they are pursued by a mystery assassin woman (Carrie Fisher), the Illinois State Police (including John Candy), and the Illinois Nazis (including Henry Gibson). Despite all this, they manage to get a gig at Bob's Country Bunker (run by Jeff Morris) posing as the Good IL' Boys. After they are done playing, the real Good IL' Boys show up. Bob realizes the Blues Brothers have tricked him and he and the Good IL' Boys join the chase against the Blues Brothers. The Blues Brothers decide to hold a concert to raise money. It works and the concert is a success. Some uninvited guests are the police, the Nazis, and the Good IL' Boys. During the concert, the Blues Brothers escape from the concert hall and go through the sewers. Down there, the mystery woman meets up with them and tries to kill them again. She reveals herself as Jake's ex-bride-to-be. He left her standing at the altar. Jake confesses his wrongs and she forgives him. The Brothers remember the police and leave her down there while they escape. They lead a high-speed car chase through downtown Chicago to get the money to the County Clerk's Office. Once there, the clerk (Steven Spielberg) accepts the payment and the orphanage is saved. The Blues Brothers and the band go to jail, though.
All in all, a great movie. With special musical performances by James Brown ("This Old Landmark"), Cab Calloway ("Minnie the Moocher"), Ray Charles ("Shake a Tail Feather"), Aretha Franklin ("Think"), and John Lee Hooker ("Boom Boom"), this film is a true classic. Also features the Blues Broths Band singing the theme from "Rawhide"!
Frosty Returns (1992)
I don't get it!
Why doesn't anyone like this special? Just because it isn't Jackie Vernon and it doesn't look like the Rankin/Bass Frosty doesn't make it horrible. I love it. And I also love the Rankin/Bass Frosty the Snowman specials. The songs are excellent, especially "Let There Be Snow"--it's so catchy! Great voice work, too--John Goodman, Brian Doyle-Murray, Andrea Martin, Jan Hooks, and Jonathan Winters. The animation is excellent. So what if it looks like the Peanuts? It is also very funny, too. John Goodman was the perfect choice for Frosty. Brian Doyle-Murray's character, Mr. Twitchell, is kind of like his character in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation". He plays it excellently there and here too. Even the kids' voices are great! So don't listen to other users saying this is horrible. It most certainly is not. It is an excellent Christmastime special.
The Halloween That Almost Wasn't (1979)
If you ever can, see this little gem!
I've been watching this little movie for thirteen years (I'm that old--scary, huh?) and I love it now as much as I did when I first saw it.
The plot is very simple: Dracula calls together a meeting of the world's most famous monsters because a rumor has started that Halloween is in danger of disappearing forever. During that meeting, the Witch admits that she doesn't want to be a witch anymore and won't fly her broom over the moon at midnight on the night before Halloween. Halloween can't start if she doesn't. She will only do it if Dracula follows a list of conditions. He won't, so she won't fly over the moon. That night, Dracula and the other monsters go to her castle to try to convince her to fly over the moon. After a few hilarious "ideas" from Igor, two children show up at the castle. The girl is dressed up like the Witch and that just about breaks the Witch's heart. She will fly over the moon only if Dracula promises to throw a Disco party afterward.
Even though this special is dated, it is still very good and very funny. The acting is superb. I hope this makes it onto DVD at some point in time. Until then, I'll be happy with the old VHS tape I have.
