Crash (2004)
Too Complex To Be Entertaining
This movie has a very complex and incoherent plot (if any), and is hard to follow from beginning to end. There's so many mini-plots running simultaneously that the scene and characters changes too frequently to keep track of. I just finished watching it about five minutes ago, and I still have no idea what I just saw. The movie leaves many loose ends and the viewer feels dissatisfied with the explanations that were given to those that were explained at all. Poor acting performances from Sandra Bullock and Brendan Fraser (who are actually only in the movie for probably 10-15 minutes all up). Not such a bad performance from Matt Dillon, but the character role he played seemed a little too unrealistic. I mean really, what's the chances that a crooked cop could feel up an innocent victim one day and then have to save that very same person from a car wreck the next day? Seems a little far fetched. This movie was nothing more than a wasted two hours, and I don't recommend it to anyone.
Grease 2 (1982)
Worst Movie Ever?
This movie latches onto the original one way too much. I have tried so many times to watch this film, but I can never watch more than 10 minutes without feeling nauseous. The acting is very mediocre, and all the songs are way too cheesy and sound too similar to each other, as well as being very poorly mimed. The dance sequences practically copy the original Grease movie step for step. Sadly, it is hard to watch this as an independent film OR a sequel, as it follows the same mold too closely - it is a blatant rip off. All the characters are the exact same stereotypes and half the one-liners are even identical. There's the leader of the T-birds, the cool side kick, the two ditsy followers, likewise with the Pink Ladies. Then of course there is the teachers, crater face etc, all the same characters but with different names and played by different actors. The only thing different about this movie is that their "cool wheels" are motorbikes not cars, and the roles of the two lead characters are reversed (i.e the female is the cool chick and the male tries to change so that he can win her heart). Truly a very hard film to watch if you have ever seen the original Grease, which is such a high energy and timeless movie. I'd only recommend it if you have never seen the original movie.
The Great Race (1965)
Absolute must-see which should have had a sequel!
I am only 23, but having older parents, I grew up watching the likes of The Great Race etc. This has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen, and as soon as I knew it was available on DVD, I had to buy it! Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon as Mr Nice Guy and his evil nemesis have been casted perfectly. There are no other actors I can think of that could play these parts as well as they do. The whole movie is exhilarating, because there are so many funny and challenging milestones that keep the viewer hooked, and as soon as one is over, the next begins. Although The Great Race is a long movie, the ending (although satisfying) still keeps you wanting more, which prompts you to crave the sequel that was never made.
Saturday Night Fever (1977)
What was all the hype about?
I finally watched Saturday Night Fever last night. For all these years all I heard was hype and good reviews regarding the movie, but in my humble opinion, it was nothing more than a typical 1970s b-grade movie. I was very disappointed. The story is disjointed throughout, acting is very mediocre (except for John Travolta himself), the characters themselves aren't as strong as they seem intended to be, and the sound and video quality is also poor. There are several parts where the audio is almost definitely lip synchronised. (By the way, I watched the DVD version, so poor quality wasn't due to it being a worn VHS video copy). The music soundtrack is probably the only thing this movie really has going for it. I think this movie is a classic that we all have to watch at one time or another, but I don't think it's in the same category as Grease, which can be watched over and over without getting tiresome.
Point Break (1991)
Swayze gets his shirt off again...
A long haired Patrick Swayze and a young Keanu Reeves team up as two fun-loving surfer boys, but what Bodhi (Swayze) doesn't know, is that Johnny Utah (Reeves) is actually an undercover cop looking for big time bank robbers, who just so happen to include himself! As the story unfolds and Johnny Utah gets caught up in it accidentally and emotionally, there is more at stake than he ever imagined. Not only does Bodhi teach him how to 'live', but he also gets him in hot water on numerous occasions. Some excellent photography in some scenes (you'll understand when/if you see it), plus, there's plenty of Swayze and Reeves' flesh!
Next of Kin (1989)
Another top performance from Swayze!
Although Patrick Swayze is at his best in the romantic and light humour films such as Fatherhood, To Wong Foo: Thanks For Everything; Julie Newmar, Dirty Dancing etc. 'Next of Kin' was definitely no disappointment for me. A would-be hillbilly-turn cop avenges his younger brother's murder in a lawful manner, while a third brother goes about it in typical redneck-hillbilly style, causing more problems and endangering them both, as well as the pregnant wife of Truman (Swayze). The best part has to be the graveyard scene, where Truman's whole family takes on the bad guys, but their brother's murderer ends up being shot by his own father! With an excellent twist to the end, this is nothing short of a good flick to have sitting around for a rainy day.
Elvis (2005)
A blatant mockery of Elvis's life!
I was quite appalled at this movie, which takes on an almost comedic approach to what is one of the most intriguing and moving stories. It seems that half the facts have been changed to turn Elvis' life into a better "story". If you want a more accurate story and actual Elvis footage, the documentaries made many years ago or 'This Is Elvis (1981)' is still a better bet. Acting by all in 'Elvis (2005)' is mediocre at best, and the way the lead actor portrays Elvis is a little "over the top" for a lot of the time. The rest of the cast is also average. The movie moves very slow in some parts and then jumps around in others, which makes it somewhat difficult to follow, and although as a whole it is a very average film, somehow it draws you in, until at the end you think to yourself, "How did I end up watching that for as long as I did?".
Christine (1983)
A Movie Any True Car Lover Can Appreciate
There are no words that can truly describe the power and passion of Christine.
Anyone who owns an older car will be able to associate with the obsession that takes over nerdish Arnie's life when he restores Christine, the beautiful Plymouth Fury.
John Carpenter's excellent directing brings the car to life to such a point where as you're watching, you become so entranced that you forget she isn't alive.
The actors are well chosen for the roles they play, and give excellent performances. This, accompanied by excellent photography, special effects, timing and musical score make Christine a definite must-see movie.
Please Note: The Australian TV edit cuts out some of the best scenes, so this movie is best seen on DVD or video.
Along Came Polly (2004)
Poor Effort For Aniston
Jennifer Aniston doesn't give her best performance in this romantic comedy (definitely not on par with that she gave in "Bruce Almighty"), and she continually comes across as though she is trying too hard, while Ben Stiller offers his usual gags and slapstick. The ever-funny Jack Black also takes on a small role, making an ideal sidekick to Stiller.
The story drags on in parts with repeated attempts at spicy food jokes, among others, but has a few surprises along the way. Although it is pretty obvious what the conclusion will be, it is still an amusing and entertaining movie.
Don't be mislead with the quote on the DVD stating that it anything like "Friends" or "There's Something About Mary" - because it's like neither.
Flirting with Disaster (1996)
Not Ben Stiller's Best
This movie is packed full of Stiller's clichéd "clumsy-man" gags (similar to, but not as funny as those in "Meet The Parents" and "Meet The Fockers") And the plot outline on the video/DVD case makes the movie sound much more exciting and funny than it really is.
There are parts of the movie that are never resolved properly, don't seem to flow, are unnecessary to the plot, and it seems to end abruptly with no real resolution. Much of the movie is left for the viewer to work out for themselves.
Definitely not a *bad* movie, and I don't want to discourage anyone from watching it, but it's just not one of Stiller's best.
Mean Girls (2004)
An Excellent Teen Flick!
Much better than I expected!
This movie is another of those typical high school stories where the not so popular kids try to teach the popular kids a lesson and bring them down a notch or two. This results in endless pranks and backstabbing. There's also a touch of romance, with the main character Cady having her first real crush and doing everything she can to win his heart back from the mean girls. Definitely a story anyone in their teens/20s can relate to.
There's some very clichéd scenes and jokes, but also some VERY funny parts.
The storyline has similarities to "Never Been Kissed" (with Drew Barrymore.) If you like movies such as "Can't Hardly Wait" and "Jawbreaker" then I reckon you'll LOVE Mean Girls!
