The Patty Duke Show (1963)
Yay for the 60's
I love love love 60's shows. I didn't grow up on them sadly but I watch them all the time now. This is one of my favorites and I'm watching a few episodes every day. The values are so much better than TV now. One of the reasons I like this show is how the parents are portrayed. I've always had a problem with how TV portrays parents as embarrassing bumbling idiots(watch any cartoon). As a child I thought out was annoying and inaccurate. Now as a parent I feel this does a disservice to parents. With patty duke you see kids respecting their parents and vice versa. Plus there always seems to be a lesson to be learned. Sometimes a parent learns something and sometimes it's a kid. Party keeps me laughing, I want to throttle Richard, and Cathy makes me relax knowing someone with sense will keep it all together
Arrow (2012)
interesting twist on arrow keeps you on the edge
For the most part I really like this series. I've watched the first two seasons so I think I have a fairly good feel for it. I like many things about this show and most of the actors do a great job portraying their character. I must say felicity is my favorite, she does the awkward honest role splendidly.
There are two things that really keep this show from perfection for me. The first is all the sex. Not that there's a lot of it, buy why oh why must Oliver sleep with every female character(barring relatives and felicity)? He's suppose to be a changed man after the island yet he still seems like billionaire playboy in this aspect.
The second thing that just bugs me is the portrayal of black canary. First off it's kind of confusing who canary is. Canarys name, Dinah, is given to Mrs lance who definitely can't be canary. Which leaves the two girls laurel and Sarah. Laurel bugs the heck out of me but seems to be Oliver's "favorite". Sarah has the martial art skills and a black outift(which is lacking the look of the comic canary outfit). The thing that really gets me though is neither of them has the canary cry. How the heck can you have black canary without her power. End rant.
Anyway I'd recommend this show and can't wait for next season.
Once Upon a Time (2011)
Amazing, keeps you wanting more.
One of the best TV series I've ever watched. An interesting twist on fairy tales and how they all connect. I liked how it all felt real, not to sugary and not all dark. The first few episodes you have to adjust to being in the present time and then flashback to pre-curse. Once i adjusted to it i found it very enthralling. It was like you actually got to know the characters, got a feel for them. Who they were, who they are, and how they got there. Extensive details on several characters really made them not only easier to connect with but more realistic.
Hands down I'd say the thing that made this show so far above other series was the "villains". I find with most movies/TV shows you mostly have bad guys. People that are without a doubt evil and malicious. You hate them, dislike them, etc. They deserve what's coming to them. In some cases the villain is actually the good guy and there was a misunderstanding. For Once upon a time it was different, the villains were bad no doubt. But once you saw why they were evil, how they got to that point, and how they slowly slid from being not evil to evil.
Oddly enough, my favorite two characters are Rumplestiltskin and the Evil Queen. Knowing why they acted the way they did and seeing the horrid things life had thrown at them i really felt for them. No it didn't make their actions right, but at least i understood why they did them. They were more real to me then most "bad guys" and easier to relate to then Snow White.
Turbo (2013)
Cute for kids, a smile for adults
Keeping in mind that it's an animated movie targeting children I'd say this is a decent movie. It's cute, the snail idea itself is original, and I'd say there's probably several parts that would make a child laugh.
I wasn't laughing at any point in the movie, but i did smile a few times at some cute little things they did. I appreciate the clean movie that i could easily suggest to any family with young children.
Though I didn't mind watching this, I'd say for adults it's a bit of seen it before and not humorous enough to engage. There where several bits that were extremely hard to swallow. Such as a snail surviving getting bathed by some sort of engine fluid. A very neat garden where the owners just ignored the very large and obvious snail infestation. An adult running over a very large, ripe tomato with a lawnmower instead of picking it up.
I liked how they showed that though turbo's brother seemed unsupportive, he was actually just being protective. He wanted him to be safe and alive. And was there at the end to support turbo to finish. In contrast the 2 human brothers had a lot of issues. The one steals money from the other and that's never really dealt with. Leaving the impression that it's OK to steal if you're following your dreams and succeed. And the other brother doesn't support him until he actually wins the race. Making it feel that it was about success for him instead of his brother.
Firefly (2002)
Somehow Catchy, but not so engaging as to miss it
After hearing that this was an excellent show I decided to give it a shot. I can't say I hate it, but neither did i love it as so many seem to.
Things I liked: Most of the main characters. There was wide variety that either had you smiling or feeling that they had this sense of realness to them. The story lines though very basic with no larger plot were engaging enough to keep me coming back for the rest of the series. The hang up of seeing futuristic mixed with western was hard to swallow at first, but soon I just came to see it as original. I think with more time and a larger plot there could've been some great character development and a great show.
What i didn't like: Two things mainly, and i imagine they're probably personal issues. The first was the lead character of Mal. I'm sorry but it took me several episodes to not wince over everything he did. Such a cheap copy of Han Solo. I understand the appeal of making the same personality, but for whatever reason the actor or the directing, it wasn't pulled off. So for anyone who's a fan of Star Wars you'll see a poor attempt at a roguish magnetic scoundrel with a heart. Perhaps if i hadn't seen the role played so well by someone else it wouldn't have been an issue. The other main issue was the glorified position of prostitutes. They never really explained why in this time the role of courtesan was so highly praised. I felt it was in poor taste to give viewers the idea that such a thing was not only acceptable but honored. I felt like rolling my eyes every time Enara was in a scene.
