Aloko Udapadi (2017)
A great story presented in an average film
First of all the story line of this movie, which talks about a a great king of Sri Lanka, who does not have many folklore written about is quite fascinating. It is a great reminder of the great plots and sub plots hidden in a 2500 years of rich history.
As it seems obvious to anyone, this is a mega production from a Sri Lanka perspective. The effort the production team has used is highly commendable and the effects and CGI used by the production is at a really high standard.
All these said and done, the movie lacks quite few areas when its come to direction. Mainly the flow of the film has quite a few disjoints. You can see many places where suddenly happens without a build up. While there is few places this can be seen, the great war that happens is a prime example. There is absolutely no build up to the final war. Two parties just spring up and fight in the middle of nowhere. It is inability to keep the viewers gloom to the story is quite disappointing.
Although there are few shinning moments where we can see the director has shown his skill, (in moments like it shows a monks taking water from the pond) overall he has failed to present one of most presentable stories from history.
Acting has nothing to write home about. Acting is average at best and there is nothing really for the viewers to remember.
Overall a film that had a potential to be a really good one. But a film that has not lived up to the hype built up. Further, a film that has missed a chance to produce a masterpiece, despite the plot itself is an absolute delight.
Samanala Sandhawaniya (2013)
Love is Amazing
Samanala Sandwaniya (A butterfly Symphony) is a musical film which talks about the bizarre and the sweet nature of love. Through a young sensitive boys (A musician) unconventional love, which he himself cannot or would not want to control, director opens the viewers to a symphony of love. The use of music in the film is extraordinary through out the build up of the story. And the way he has kept the suspense in the story line is highly commendable.
The film is full of mouth opening moments, which keeps you gloomed to the story. The way the film invites the viewers to look at love in the deepest and the most sensitive way is quite unique.
One of the best films I have ever watched. As usual, Jayantha Chandrasiri has made an extraordinary work of art. A must watch for everyone. And you will come out of the theater amazed.
