Privilege (1967)
Decent movie that is worth seeking out
I was lucky enough to find this movie on Ebay, after hearing good things about it.Similar to other comments, I definitely can see how the main character Steven Shorter can be compared with some of today's pop stars.Originally I read that this film is a lot like the 'A Clockwork Orange', but with the exception of the whole conformity thing I didn't see it.It's a good movie in its own right, though. The story is a interesting concept on how you could use a superstar singer to exploit products and ideals. The guy from Manfred Mann(Paul Jones) plays the lead, and even though he's not that great, he's not that bad either. The way the religious folks were kind of betrayed like Nazis wouldn't play too well today, but it was effective. The stunning visuals during the musical performances and the music is very good, but forget about a finding a soundtrack.Patti Smith does a cool version of 'Set me Free'.Maybe one day they'll release this on DVD.
Urban Legend (1998)
This movie contains some good things, just not enough
Urban Legend is one of quite a few movies from the late 90's that tries to capitalize on the success of 'Scream'.The movie starts off strong with the girl in the SUV and the interplay she has with the gas station attendant. It's not the best thing when the movie peaks at the very beginning. If I wasn't a fan of the genre I probably would of given a lower score. The rest of the movie is not awful, there are a few more scenes with suspense, though the director likes to use the loud music too much. The ending of the film just leaves you feeling limp. The acting in the movie is not too bad, even though I can't think of too many standout performances.Alicia Witt is OK in the lead, far from a Neve Campbell or a Jamie Lee Curtis.Jaret Leto is solid and I can understand how Rebecca Gayheart isn't the best, but I think she's hot so I'm biased.Joshua Jackson and Michael Rosenbaum annoyed the hell out me through this flick. They get what they deserve though.Loretta Devine would be a good Mrs. Jefferson if they ever make a movie. If you come into this flick with low expectations you'll find it an enjoyable ride.
May (2002)
Definitely a weird movie, but enjoyable
I wasn't sure what to expect from May before seeing it outside of strange, and strange it is, but I enjoyed it.The best thing going for the movie is the lead character May played by Angela Bettis. She is a truly sympathetic girl who with a little tenderness could of turned out little more normal. You can tell that even though she is weird and shy(and pretty cute too)that within lies a heart of gold.Even after May goes over the deep end I found myself wondering'if only she had a real friend growing up'.Its kind of the same thing you felt for Sissy Spack in 'Carrie'. The supporting actors/actresses are decent for the most part. All with the exception of Anna Farris who plays her friend Polly. She just annoyed the hell out of me and I was happy how things turned out for her.Jeremy Sisto does a solid job as the love interest of May.He's a little strange himself and he has a cool Jim Morrison look going. The movies pacing is a little slow, things don't really pick up until past the halfway point. This film doesn't play like a typical slasher, but more like a Grateful Day album, a weird, strange trip.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Adventures of a sadistic predator in merry old England
This is one of my all time favorite movies. The first time I saw this film I couldn't grasp all the Shakespearian language, but I still was fascinated. The opening scene with little Alex and his pals chilling out and a local lounge getting ready for a night of ultra-violence is one of the most powerful scenes I have witnessed. The direction & the sound along with sinister look on Alex's(Malcom McDowell) face had me mesmerized & I went along for a two hour journey. The story basically tells you the story of a young dude named Alex who is as sick & depraved as any serial killer produced on this planet. There is a consequence for his actions which is strange & compelling rolled up in one. There are some brutal rape scenes along with violence that might not be for everybody, but you'll probably be glued to your seat. Malcom McDowell is brilliant in this movie, but outside of Gangster No.1, he has lite up some stink bombs in movies like Tank Girl,Milk Money,& Class of 99 but no one's perfect. The prison guard with the Hitler mustache stuck out for me. The only drawback might be getting use to the language of the film along with some bad settings since the movie is suppose to be in the future but a lot of movies have great settings and no plot.Great movie
Barbara Broadcast (1977)
Meet Barbara Broadcast,a author who likes to have fun.
I strongly don't recommend this movie unless your a fan of the 70's porno genre. It is quite tame by today's standard, but the plot is just as incoherent as the modern porn plot.Barbara Broadcast is a author who takes tricks on the side because its so much fun!She is not that bad looking of a lady, kind of like a Julieann Moore type.Only thing is she is not nearly as attractive.Attractiveness is not found at all in this movie, plastic surgery wasn't as relevant as it is now.A guy could probably see better looking girls at his local watering hole. There is a dude who has a cool porno mustache that was amusing. If going to the XXX movie theater's remind you of the gold old days than see this movie.Than seek help.
Les valseuses (1974)
A Trio of drifters roam around France creating mischief
I originally saw this film years ago during Cinemax Friday after dark series(back when the cable box was built like a keyboard),and it intrigued me. Even though there is a pointless aspect to the film it is well acted. The performances of Depardieu & Dewaere are very enjoyable. They have a good chemistry together & Miou-Miou makes a pink fur look breathtaking.A movie like this probably wouldn't be made in these politically correct times(at least not in the US), since it seems to sensationalize things like violence, robbery,& casual sex. This movie proves that with a talented cast & also talented directing a good movie is a good movie no matter the subject. It saddened me to find out Patrick Dewaere committed suicide & in the near future I,ll will check him out with Depardieu & Miou-Miou in Get Out Your Hankerchief.
Scream for Help (1984)
Nobody believes Christy that her step dad is trying to kill her mom & her.
I saw this movie a lot in the 80's and just saw it again recently. If your looking for a suspenseful thriller don't look here.If you want to see some bad acting with some way over the top cheesy music that will make you laugh, look here. Cute(but dumpy)Christy suspects her no good step dad is trying to hurt her mom & herself.Watch as she cuts three straight days of school to follow him in his car on her bike(very funny).Watch as she drags her best friend along which leads to her death(not funny, but not sad).Watch as DAYS later she loses her virginity with her best friend's boyfriend(hilarious). The end has a final confrontation that reminded me of the home alone movies, but this isn't suppose to be a comedy.I admit I was in hysterics the way the mom was flung around in her wheelchair. This is definitely a so bad its good type movie.I enjoyed it for all the wrong reasons. If your looking for something similar but better check out The Stepfather with Terry O'Quinn.
