Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
Confusing and not very accurate
It is inevitable to compare this movie with Cecil B. DeMille's masterpiece "The Ten Commandments" of 1956. DeMille's version is full of rich filming and dialog with an impacting soundtrack and wonderful acting. It is a coherent film and its special effects are now legend. This 2014 version has a bad script, is very confusing and needs a lot of concentration to follow. It also misses very important happenings according the the Holy Scriptures. The Moses character is way out of the Bible's description and the acting is not very convincing. Charlton Heston's rendering of Moses is perhaps the best. Let's do not forget that the Ten C. was made in 1956 as a big film made to compete against TV so it was really a full spectacle. The parting of the Red Sea on Exodus is not at all convincing and as stated before, the plagues are poorly made. Also, I missed the scenes when Moses received the Ten Commandments from the Lord and when the Jewish corrupt before the Holy Mountain both beautifully filmed by DeMille. Moreover, I think that a small child is not the best representation of God. Remember the beautiful scene in the Ten C.with the voice of Heston and the burning bush. They just don't make them as they used to.
Interstellar (2014)
Dull, over-long better read a good book or watch 2001: A Space Odyssey
This is perhaps the worst space movie I've ever seen. Confusing, useless dialogue, over-long, slow, boring. The director tried to copy 2001 A Space Odyssey with no luck. Better watch this film or read a good book. The plot is easily understood by scientists like Carl Sagan or Stephen Hawkins but not for Joe Average, black holes, gravity effect etc. It shows interesting subjects but they could have been better written, making the movie much more attractive and interesting. What a waste of good acting and nice production design. One of the worst aspects of the movie is that actor McConaughey doesn't vocalize clearly and it is very difficult to understand his words. He must study with Henry Higgins (My Fair lady) so he can learn some phonetics!! But he is a very good actor, wasted on this film.
Top Gun (1986)
The REAL star is the Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Wonderful and just an entertaining movie. Those of us who love aircraft just like to watch this movie hundreds of times. To watch the main star of the picture, beautiful Grumman F-14A Tomcat is just worth repeating it at last once a week!! By the way this movie created the fad of building miniature plastic scale models of the Tomcat. Several manufacturers like Monogram and Revell started selling kits like hot cakes and they couldn't keep up with demand. Card models were also offered. The Tomcat became an overnight movie star!!! She acted beautifully, quite natural and showing her beautiful curvaceous lines uncensored!!! Just can't wait to see Top Gun II. And don't miss the soundtrack, specially "Take my Breath Away".
Francis Gary Powers: The True Story of the U-2 Spy Incident (1976)
Good historical film, but could have been much better!!
This film shows in a couple of hours one of the most impacting and important events of the cold war. Based on the book written by Gary Powers, it is accurate but as stated above, could have been much better. Little attention is paid to the flight itself, the beautiful U-2, the main star of the picture, is not shown as much as it should be. I think it could have included more about the U-2 design at Lockheed, the work of that genius called Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson, chief designer of the U2 and how the CIA decided to carry out those spy flights, how they picked the pilots etc. etc. If it was made today, I'm sure it would have included very important situations and happenings that the film misses. But at least it is the only one that shows this historical event so important to the history of not only the United States and the former Soviet Union but the world over. New generations of the whole planet must know about this incident.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Good movie, excessive human degradation
This movie is very good indeed. Beautiful photography and acting by Jack Dawson, sorry, Leonardo DiCaprio. However, it is too long, one hour and a half would have been more than enough. And the worst part of it: It has too much sex (looks like an adult movie in some scenes), too much drugs, too much vice, too much scamming, too much of human degradation. I'm sure this picture would have been much more impacting without so many demonstrations of human decadence. I know that all these situations attract viewers but I think that they were absolutely unnecessary in an otherwise excellent film. I can't imagine what would have happened if this movie was made in the 50s. The censorship would have banned it almost completely. I'm not against showing real life occurrences in a movie, but I think in this case the director exaggerated by including such degradation situations as orgies, how to use cocaine and how to deceive honorable investors. A message can be transmitted without disrespecting the human being. And perhaps the worst part of all this, why show fighting situations in front of a small child?
Gravity (2013)
Only special effects deserves watching Gravity
I don't know why this movie has caused so much turmoil, upheaval. It is a boring movie that in several scenes tries to imitate the beautiful 2001 A Space Odyssey. It is so improbable and full of errors. No doubt the special effects are very good indeed. The development of the picture is monotonous, has useless dialogue and it could have been more interesting if it had different situations, not just the blackness of space for 125 minutes. Music is good, photography is also good. It is a typical Hollywood movie, with several situations that are definitively not possible in real life to long to mention here!! It only deserves the best effects Oscar.
The Bounty (1984)
The best of the Mutiny's films
Yes, indeed. This movie is without doubt the best one of all the Bounty movies made. It is very accurate historically speaking and its impact is fantastic. I saw it for the first time in Miami on vacation in 1984. When I returned to Bogotá, I just could not get it out of my mine. Fortunately, in a short time, the LaserDisc version appeared and I bought it immediately. I was very much impressed including the fantastic soundtrack by Vangelis. I am a Bounty fan. I have studied the only successful mutiny in the history of mutinies, read many books, watched all films and upon watching this masterpiece of modern cinema it definitively shows what really happened with some dramatic effects which is natural for any movie to make it more interesting. Hopkins, Gibson and the rest of the cast act wonderfully. One small detail but important. Tahitian girls are shown bare breasted. The way it should be. The 1962 and 1935 versions, do not. If I could I would give this film 1.000.000 stars vote.
Bathing Beauty (1944)
Beautiful, refreshing, funny.
Bathing Beauty is one of those films that one can see over and over again. Lavishly produced and with a wonderful and exciting music, it is a picture that must be included in every DVD collection. My first contact with this movie was one late night when I taped it from our local TV station. Then, several years later, my daughter Paloma was only 10 when she saw it for the first time. She was fascinated!! Now she is 18 and knows the music and most of the script by heart. Esther Williams is beautiful, very warm and excellent swimmer. Skelton funny as always. Although the plot is silly, it serves as a frame for a wonderful presentation of long past artists such as our Colombian Carlos Julio Ramírez who was considered one of our best baritones. Also, Xavier Cugat "Cugie", Harry James and Ethel Smith. Today we have no artists like them. So if you enjoy MGM musicals, you will enjoy this one quite a lot!!
