Damsel (2024)
Absolute tripe!
Why cannot I give zero stars? Awful movie. Millie B started digging a hole with Enola Holmes 2 and hasn't stopped with this nasty, clichéd, dumb, boring, waste of time. The movie could have been an hour shorter and been just as bad, but no they dragged it on and on like the slow drip of water torture. I kept waiting for the pace to pick up but a damp squib has more bang than the conclusion. The only good thing I can think of is that it ended.. My 4 year old grandson can come up with a better plot, and a more entertaining feature with my phone camera. Sorry, but I don't have the vocabulary to fully convey just what a terrible movie this was. Do yourself a favour and avoid.
I, Frankenstein (2014)
Unfairly panned. Good, entertaining stuff. Watch it!
I've seen this movie more than once. It's a great take on Frankenstein that my wife and I really liked. The plot is coherent, the story moves at a decent clip, the action is great. What's not to like? I was hoping they'd make a sequel. Watch it if you haven't, the haters have no clue.
Abigail (2019)
Don't believe the negative reviews!
This is a movie any steampunk fan will love. The world building is detailed, the special effects are great and the story is interesting. As far as the negative reviews go, I can only see a built in animus against all things foreign in general & Russian in particular. The acting could be a bit more convincing and the movie's pace dragged in bits but not to an unforgivable extent. Give the guys a break already! I'll be watching out for more steampunk from Aleksandr Boguslavskiy (the director.. Sheesh!)..
Elysium (2013)
Better ways to waste 2 odd hours of your life
Saw the 6.9 score on IMDb and settled down for a good sci-fi evening. The movie started with some Spanish dialog which changed to English but might just as well continued in Swahili for all the sense it made. The story painfully crawled along at a drunk snail's pace with about the same sense of direction. The plot was notable in its absence and any shreds of a narrative were dull, boring and predictable. I just wonder how the maker of District 9 could come up with this drivel and how Matt Damon would sign up for it! Go to sleep, meditate, watch traffic or train a cockroach instead and spare yourself the torture of sitting through what seems to be 4 hours but is actually 109 minutes.
Waar (2013)
11/10 for effort, 10/10 for a Pakistani movie & 7/10 if seen as 'any' movie
Wasn't expecting much when my family entered the theater. The opening sequence however blew us away and set the pace for the rest of the movie! This is far and away the best Pakistani movie ever made. It is also way way superior to any fare produced by the (not so) friendly neighborhood 'bollywood'. Here is a story with a beginning, a middle and an end; the characters do not break out into impromptu song with everybody falling into step for a quick dance and the fights are actually choreographed. The story moves on at a fast clip with only a couple of scenes that could have been edited for brevity.
The odd lecture notwithstanding, the screenplay is well conceived, timely and topical. The movie however would have been more realistic in Urdu with English subtitles for the intended international audience. Bilal Lashari has set the bar high, now it is up to the industry to step up and give us more movies we can watch and be proud of.
New York'ta Bes Minare (2010)
Confused story line
Started off promising enough, however soon descended into lectures, stereotypes and an unbelievably unsophisticated sequence of events. All leading to a bizarre conclusion.
Without giving anything away: The protagonists make free use of cellphones apparently unaware of the concept of phone-taps. The FBI is unaware of even basic stakeout procedure, all suspects hide in plain sight and have a regular stream of visitors under the (very broken) radar of the law enforcing agencies. Danny Glover's character is himself not very clear what he is up to.
In short, the big budget and the big name cast are squandered for want of a half reasonable screenplay. Shame really.
