Stranded (2013)
I have never, ever wanted to kill myself. Until now.
I am a filmmaker and try to be as objective as possible. Understanding that many films have limitations, I try to see beyond the finances and look for other qualities such as performance, story, direction, and execution.
Well, I looked for nearly an hour and found myself, after the first 3 minutes, wishing that a piece of the space shuttle would re-enter the atmosphere, crash through my roof, and hit me in the head.
The most exciting moment of this viewing experience was when I finally decided to hit the stop button on my DVD player. The folks that made this fiasco should seriously consider Truckmasters or barber college.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
What do you do when everything's been done?
As with most of the reviews here, I must say that this movie reveals much more than a bad story, bad acting, and bad presentation. In all fairness however, I think that many people are missing what this film is saying loud and clear. The Hollywood bar has been set so high, they can no longer get over it.
More and more I am seeing movies that are simply a roll of the Hollywood dice. Special effects are no longer special. They have awed viewers to the point of boredom and the wow factor has long since faded. Huge studios are grasping at straws hoping to get lucky but are obviously loosing major ground when it comes to creating anything that is remotely entertaining.
Movie goers are shell shocked after enduring bomb after bomb such as John Carter, Battleship, Olympus, and so on. The entire movie making community seems to have lost the one true rule of film making, it's all about the story! Most movies today, simply don't have one and this is no exception.
Falling Skies (2011)
The puzzle pieces just don't fit together
My first instinct after season one was to flame this show with malice. Then I decided to be fair and wait a while. Well, I waited, and while the pieces seems to be there, they simply refuse to go together.
The characters seem really out of place in this series but that may be due to the terrible scripts that are written. With each episode, I walk away at the end feeling like I just watched that episode last week! The story never really changes, it just drags on.
There is no heart. No challenges that go beyond fighting aliens every week. There is no obvious toll that this would inevitably take on each person. Aside from the alien threat, there is the issue of simple survival, shelter, food, illness, mental stress, none of which have really been explored.
In short, it's boring and terribly predictable. You want to know what the season opener will be in season 4? They are going to fight more aliens, again. I'm out!
The Park Is Mine (1985)
A Worthwhile Flick!
I can't imagine Tommy Lee Jones in anything bad... His performance here is solid and believable although a bit hammy at times.... What I like about this movie is the story... With the current state of affairs in the USA at the present time...(2007) It seems very relevant...
Everyone seems to be asleep .. Too preoccupied with their cell phones and Ipods to notice what is going on around them. This movie really grabs you... Too bad this doesn't happen in real life! You still find yourself rooting for the guy who you know is doing wrong but his justification is beyond what is legal.. it's simply the right thing to do! Good supporting cast and Helen Shaver does a good job as the objective reporter. It is an old theme but still a very powerful one and all the key elements are there. Sometimes you have to put your selfish desires aside and find the strength to do what is right even though it may not be popular.
If you like a story with a solid message, decent acting and a few thrills for good measure, I recommend The Park Is Mine!
V for Vendetta (2005)
Awesome
This is a must see for anyone who doubts the events currently unfolding in the USA. It is a parallel to the future status of the US. Wake up people and feed your brain! Remember when we had a constitution? This movie hits on all marks and it is GREAT entertainment!
Aside from the effects, which are great, this film is solid with story. Compare this film to current events and what we know of past deeds by power hungry politicians, it reveals a sad picture of how the general public is manipulated and the media controlled. They show you what they want you to see, not the news.
I hope we will see more films like this. Hugo Weaving is incredible. You never see his face or emotion but his performance penetrates. Natalie Portman also delivers a great performance although she does have a few weak moments. Overall I would say that V will stand the test of time and go on to be one of the all time best movies.
