The Rock (1996)
The Father.
Part 1 of the Nicolas Cage Holy Trinity with the legendary Sean Connery. Cage was about to become one of the 90s biggest action stars. Nobody saw that coming but the world was better for it.
Magnum P.I. (2018)
Bring on Season 2!!
Just finished watching season one with my two boys. We all love it!! Great characters that become more lovable each episode. Top class family entertainment.
The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
Woody and the Flashlight.
Nobody does high school coming of age movies better than the Americans. Ticks all the boxes, and Woody Harrelson is on form as usual.
Arrival (2016)
Surprisingly clever sci fi.
The twist. Wow, I genuinely didn't see it coming until the end, and then it all made sense. You've got to give this well made movie your time. Loved it.
Eddie the Eagle (2015)
The legendary underdog
Great film that the legend himself is surely proud of. There's really nothing not to like about it. It's funny, uplifting and a little cheesy. Eddie the man is a combination of Chesney Hawkes, Ace Ventura and Evel Knievel, and this film is an inspirational slap in the face. I love it.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
An Intergalactic Western
I had my doubts about Alden Ehrenreich portraying Han Solo but the lad does a good job, and Donald Glover is perfectly cast as Lando. It definitely has a 'Wild West' vibe to it and I like that. I thought the movie dragged a little at times but overall it was an enjoyable romp. The train heist was one of many highlights. By the end (which includes a major surprise) I think it's fairly obvious where this is all leading to next, and I'm all for it.
Fight Club (1999)
In Tyler we trust.
A late, late entry for the best movie of the 20th century. A stunningly, original film with career high performances from Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter. It gets better after every viewing and using the Pixies 'Where is my mind?' to close it was a master stroke. If you haven't seen it, go watch it, but don't talk about it.
The Sum of All Fears (2002)
Not too shabby. Better than reading the book.
I remember really wanting to see this movie when I saw the trailer back in 2002. I finally got around to watching it this morning. It's been predictably slammed by the book brigade and those with an unhealthy hatred for Ben Affleck. I thought it was ok, but nothing spectacular. A film where a nuclear bomb explodes on mainland America should have felt more dramatic. I thought that part was relatively weak. Still worth a watch. It made me ponder about the human race.
Face/Off (1997)
The Holy Ghost.
Part 3 of the Nicolas Cage Holy Trinity with bonus Travolta. Magnificent!
