Deadbeat (2014)
Season 3 ruined it.
The first two seasons were really good, sweet, funny and all rounded humour. The third season ruined it all, by getting rid of great cast and storylines and replacing it, by being crude and disgusting. While the first two seasons had a couple of cringy moments, the third season was just one big cringe, full of faeces, farts, vomit and sexual content. The first two seasons Pac was this sweet, awkward guy, that just wanted to help ghosts and get high. The third season ruined it all and made him into a bit of a douchebag. They never even explained what happened to some of the characters from the first two seasons like Zoila and blob.
Faraway Downs (2023)
More than the eye can see.
I loved the original movie and this has just added more to it. You get more of the story. Scenes that were originally cut or shortened for time, now play in their full and you get a better understanding of the story within itself.
This series will make you laugh and cry. It was wonderful to see the talented David Gulpilil (who has sadly passed away), in a more extended role in this series. In the movie, he was a bit of an enigma, just constantly watching the people, in this he seems to interact with them more and give some depth to his character.
It was the ending though, that has stopped me from giving this the full ten stars. While we did finally learn the Drovers name, it was heart wrenching to then watch him die. Sarah and Nullah then returned to Faraway Downs, only for Nullah to go walkabout with King George, thus leaving Sarah all alone. It seemed so depressing, that after everything that she has been through, that she will still end up alone. I am a sucker for a happy ending.
This showed more of our wonderful country of Australia and showed how complex we really are. That our deserts can go from dry cracked wastelands to lakes and blooming fields in a matter of weeks or even days.
Our people and our history are as wide and varying as any other and this has also showed that and not just the good parts either. There are many black spots in our history, but we acknowledge them, we learn from them and we try not to make the same mistakes again.
While this series may not be to everyone's tastes and some don't understand that this is not a reshoot with CGI to make them look younger, but footage that was originally filmed when making the movie, only for it to have to end up on the cutting room floor, due to time constraints; This series is a definite yes for me. It has everything you want and then some.
All I ask is that you watch for yourself with an open mind and make your own opinion.
The Winchesters (2022)
It is but it isn't!
Is it Supernatural, no. Is it supposed to be a carbon copy, no. To do a sequel or a prequel to a very well established show was always going to be difficult, especially when we already had a lot of back story, but they have set this up well. The characters are good, especially Carlos, who's is fantastic. The thing is with a show like this is that if they changed it too much, everyone would complain, that it is too far from the lore, but they have changed it just enough that it is still part of the lore, but can still stand on its own. Do we miss Dean and Sam and they're crazy group of family and friends? Of course we do, we followed them for 15 years, but even they had a rocky beginning and many thought they wouldn't last. So give the Winchesters a chance and let them build their momentum and their crazy family.
Baymax! (2022)
Great Show
These were great shows that dealt with some everyday problems. I think that they would have been better if they were longer and there had been more of them. By the time you got into them, they were done.
Last Madame (2019)
Good acting...but
While this show did seem interesting, it was very predictable and did not seem to have much of a point to it. There really wasn't much mystery or intrigue and what you saw was what you got.
The actors were great for the roles they played, but there needed to be more of a storyline to hook you in.
Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans (2021)
My heart broke
A beautiful story that we have come to know a love from both the Tales of Arcadia and Guillermo del Toro. As they said it was going to be the last, I knew it would be sad, but to kill off sweet Toby Pie was heartbreaking. With the twist ending, I now want to see the whole series again, with Jim knowing what's coming and Toby as the Trollhunter. It would be another fantastic series.
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Better than everyone believes.
These days people rate movies too unfairly and Jupiter Ascending is one of those movies that continues to get a bad name. Because this was created by the Wachowskis, I think that people went into this thinking that it was going to be the next Matrix and never actually gave it a chance to be its own film.
It is a star studded cast that creates a spectacular movie for all to see. An epic tale of ascension, betrayal, love. lust and family. It is visually beautiful with a narrative that while not complex is interesting and entertaining.
While this may not be the film that defines the era or one for the ages, it is definitely one that you can easily watch again and again. If given a real chance, it is a film you will come to love.
The Miniaturist (2017)
Really?
I watched the first episode and became wrapped up in the mysteries that surround the house and its inhabitants, the Mysterious Miniaturist and how they seemed to know everything that was going on within those walls. Then we get to the second episode and what do we get? Two characters are dead, there really was no big mystery to the Miniaturist, she was just observant and life will just go on. No mystery, no intrigue, just a flat ending.
Watching this was like going to the symphony where it builds up to this huge crescendo and the end is someone blowing a party whistle.
There was no point to any of it.
Trollhunters (2016)
A Show for the Ages
This has to be one of the best, if not the best show I have seen in a really long time. Great stories, lovable characters and episodes you just have to watch again and again and again.
There are no kids in my house, but Trollhunters is well loved, continually watched and always anticipating the next season. We will binge watch the seasons, go away for a couple of days and maybe watch another show or two, but inevitably we will be right back to binge watch the seasons again. With each time we watch it, we see something new, little bits and pieces that we have missed before.
With it's wonderful script, entertaining cast, beautiful graphics and storytelling, this isn't just a kids cartoon, this really is a show for all ages
Vampire Academy (2014)
Not what I hoped for!
I was looking forward to the release of Vampire Academy. I had read each of the books thoroughly and was anticipating seeing each character and plot come to life on the big screen. What we got instead was Mean Girls with fangs.
While most people seemed to blame the bad movie on the cast of (at the time) lesser known actors, I blame it entirely on the writers. Instead of actually delving into the books and writing a script that paid credence to Richelle Mead's writing, they gave us the same "Plastic" drivel that comes from any Waters Brothers movie.
If this movie had been written and directed as it should have been, this would have been the beginning of a long lasting movie franchise. Instead we get this one movie flop and may never get the chance to see a "proper" adaptation on the big screen within our lifetime.
Fifty Shades Darker (2017)
I enjoyed it.
I think that this was a great film with a better developed story and a cast that was at ease with each other.
While I liked Fifty Shades of Grey, I think that Fifty Shades Darker delved a little deeper into the story. While the first movie was mostly about Ana and her sexual awakening, this was about Christian and his realization that you need more than just sex.
You could plainly see that both Dakota and Jamie were also more at ease with each other. None of their scenes felt forced or hindered by a lack of trust or friendship that you could see in the first movie.
While many are bagging this movie for not being a cinematic masterpiece, I believe that they take movies way too seriously and that Fifty Shades Darker is a great piece of entertainment.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
Not for me
I have to say with all the hype this film was given I thought it was going to be a whole lot better than it actually was. The most interesting parts of the movie were what was shown in the previews and everything else just seemed to fill the spaces in-between.
Emma Watson was great and it showed that she is diverse in her acting roles and that she could break away from forever being Hermione, but the movie as a whole was kind of boring and long-winded. It was just so disappointing overall. Yet another film where it never actually lives up to the hype.
Watch it and make your own opinion but for me, this just wasn't the best
