Scrooge (1951)
The Best Version!
This English production starring Alastair Sim is the best version and IMHO, closest to the book. Sim's performance is masterful, showing the guilt, conflict and regret of Scrooge as he's confronted by his past so that Scrooge is fully human and not a caricature, we can see the progression of his realization. The timeless message of redemption, compassion and investing in our fellow humans never gets old. I watch it every Christmas Eve.
How Green Was My Valley (1941)
Beautiful Film, Timeless Themes
Wonderful John Ford film about a family and the challenges they face. I love how John Ford movies show all of human nature, including the narrow-mindedness, gossip and hypocrisy (like in Stagecoach, Sergeant Rutledge, The Searchers, etc). Everything from the cast to the sets to the music is spot on. I watch it every year.
Lilies of the Field (1963)
Lovely Faith-Based Film
I watched this movie again recently and it was so enjoyable--funny, touching and Sidney Poitier definitely deserved the Oscar. I can't think of another actor who could have done that role as well. Safe to watch for the whole family--Amen!
The Ice King (2018)
Amazing Story
I was only 6 years old when John Curry won Gold so I didn't remember him that well but am so glad I saw this. It's a shame he's never mentioned at skating competitions (including the Olympics) because every figure skater from 1976 - present owes a debt to him for revolutionizing the sport.
