not for everyone

some people, apparently, just don't get it. this show is hilarious... if you get the references.

due to the obscurity of some of the references, most people won't get them all. the entire show is a cross between an homage to comic book icon Jack Kirby and the comedy of Dave Chappelle (think: the racial draft), daring to go places most shows wouldn't dare to tread. even if you don't grasp the specificity of some of the jokes, if you have an open-minded sense of humor you'll probably find yourself laughing more often than not.

I think this is actually up with the cream of the crop from Adult Swim, in which I would also include Aqua Teen, Venture Bros, Sealab, Moral Orel, Lucy Daughter of the Devil, Home Movies and, previously, Futurama.

don't believe it...

Warning: Spoilers
First off, anyone that says this is an intelligent film and that you have to be smart to get it is only showing their ignorance. A third-grader could have figured out the end of this movie about half way through.

I have to agree with a previous comment by find-something: "The twist is just not tight enough. If you're going to write a story where ultimately nothing happens, then the twist better be brilliant, I mean perfect."

EXACTLY. There is no intellectual payoff in this movie. All style, no substance. Look at how many people like this "intelligent" movie... doesn't that tell you something? I know this probably sounds elitist or something, but I guess I just expect my art to actually try to say something. This is just a marginally smarter version of a Hollywood blockbuster -- great cinematography and effects, wonderful acting, clever writing (too clever, I'd say) -- but in the end, it just cops out and lets all the dramatic tension drift away into nothingness. A lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The Island (2005)

another wasted premise

take a great premise, add some very good actors and throw in liberal doses of Hollywood dreck and you have the makings of quite a disappointing movie. the story and the production are actually quite good but it's lost in a morass of explosions and too-quick to see or care what's happening scenes. and the fall off the side of a skyscraper is just completely ludicrous. checking your reality at the door is one thing, having to turn off your brain completely is something altogether different.

if only Bay could have figured out a way to add a couple more chase sequences to this movie, then maybe he'd have something.

i love a good sci-fi flick - even when poorly executed many times - but anyone that rates this one highly is just crazy.
