Why haven't I seen this Gem before?
12 May 2019
Not since the ending scenes from Bridges of Madison County have I been so emotionally moved by a movie. I hope Eddie Murphy reads these reviews. A lot of rare 10/10 ratings and well deserved. This movie is about a growing young lady who finds decency and character in a cook who becomes part of the family. It's a joy to see her character develop as she grows and becomes a warm and compassionate person. Best movie I have seen in a long time. Eddie Murphy and Britt Robertson deserved awards instead of the usual junk Hollywood puts out.

Put me to sleep
9 February 2019
Reading subtitles a must with this gem. Some English at times but Greek and whatever else. The people and stories jump around and before long you find Bourek a bore. A young man walking along the beach gets hit in the head with a rock and has amnesia. If that is the plot not much else makes sense after that.

I don't see why it got some good reviews. Maybe they are Europeans or associated with the film. I gave it 2 stars because of the blue Mediterranean.

Broken Hearts
24 October 2018
A young man Michael becomes obsessed with an older woman, Hanna Schmitz. In return for lovemaking he reads the classics like Homer's Odessey to please her. One day she disappears and young Michael was devastated. His life destroyed so he buries himself in his books. His additive reading helped his education and law career. Over the years he became a avid book reader and collector.

The warm Hanna at the beginning of our story turns cold at times. She was illiterate and to put it bluntly, very dumb. She is publicly confronted with the horrors of her youth and sent to prison. Michael a law student was a shocked spectator at the trail.. A much older Michael records many books on cassette for her to play while in prison. Over the years she educates herself but the educated Hanna finds life unbearable living with the memory of her dark past. Michael went to the prison to get her on the day of her scheduled release.

Beautiful

Anyone with knowledge of the role Pigeoneers played in WWI and the history that pigeons played in Europe from transporting news to stock market quotes before the telegraph will enjoy this movie. Movie buffs who recall the 1940 movie "A Dispatch from Reuters" know what I mean. This of course will be missed by a lot of the younger generations.

The scenes of Flanders Belgium are peaceful and charming. The acting is good. Jamie Dornan looked troubled throughout the movie, not happy being the cold-hearted businessman his father created, he becomes remorseful and takes a career destructive path to redemption. Charlotte De Bruyne has that European brightness and simple hometown charm that is perfect as a sweet girl from Flanders living with her grandfather.

Make sure you use the subtitles on the DVD as some of the audio is Belgian.

Boring Mass Confusion
25 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In an effort to link as many of the old cast with a new crew by creating back and forth mini scenes just adds to the overall feeling of confusion. Add friendly aliens, a drunk boat crew monitoring the status of aliens drilling into the Ocean floor, poor graphics of cities being toasted, and crowded (who's who?) air combat scenes all add to my impression of a overall bad movie.

The first Independence Day movie was great. This sequel proves that a bad action movie can put you to sleep. The ending with the Queen alien seeking revenge was a stolen concept from Aliens (1986).

I love good science fiction. This is not.

So bad it's good
12 June 2016
A good number of rotten tomatoes for this one but it's so bad it's redeemable and watchable for a second time. The cost of making this film must have been rock bottom. At the end I wish this depressing soap opera continued following the lives of these depressing individuals and their bleak existence. I can see the classic cult appeal to this sad excuse for a motion picture. But I liked it.

No sex and almost no bad language. A glimpse into a life of poverty and boredom. A week long trip seeking adventure in dreary Cleveland and traveling to a cheap motel in Florida. I got a good laugh when cousin Eva showed the two dead beats the view of Lake Erie.

Suicide Alert - If you're depressed this movie could push you over the edge. :)

The Thing from another World 1951
22 December 2013
One of a very few movies I would rate a 10. It's perfection was mostly due a Charles Ledera script based on the story "Who Goes There?" and the director talents of Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks. The cast was marvelous.

The opening scene of the reporter Scotty walking his way through blizzard like snow and below zero temperature to enter a warm and cozy officers club is special. The beautiful soft music of the late 40's plays as Mr. Scott warms up by the fireplace. We get introductions underway to the main characters, pilot Captain Henry and his flying mates. A page by the general for the Captain and we are off to join a group of scientists at the north pole to explore a mysterious plane crash.

Some of the scenes at the North poll station scared the pants off me when I first saw the movie. In between the scary stuff Captain Henry and a secretary Nikki added a few romantic moments, one scene with a band playing "A lovely way to spend an evening". It's a shame that the movie sound track had none of the soft music numbers that also played in the mess hall scenes.

A great ending had me "looking at the skies" for years after.
