Vampire (2011)
Modern Day True Vampires
To those that enjoy the Dracula vampire movies, don't bother with this one. This is not a fantasy. This is a true modern day sanguinarian vampire drama that is very enjoyable and very believable. While some may consider if bordering on horror, only due to a second vampire within the story, it is a well written and portrayed drama of true vampirism, where people truly are addicted to drinking human blood of others. Most will enjoy this as it fails to be as predictable as it first appears, and everyday life drama is well portrayed. It is disappointing that that many gave this a low rating, most likely as they simply wanted to see the typical fantasy vampire horror movie. This isn't it - this movie is real life, and truly could be based on a true story.
Scarlet Moon (2006)
Difficult to Find Something Good to Say
A broken storyline that falls short of any logical progression, and has the feel of something written as an 8th grade class project. It is very obviously extremely low budget (there are many you-tube videos that show more effort at most likely even lower budgets). However, budget alone is no excuse for total failure at making any attempt to "fit" the scenes, although it may be an excuse for the total lack of special effects and childish "filming" of a fight scene. It is introduced as the year 2030, and absolutely no effort was made to make any scenes anything other than circa 2000. On the positive side, the gratuitous nudity several times provided a reason to not stop watching. It would seem the writer was simply having fun, and some people may find it amusing as long as they didn't have to pay to see it.
Cop Car (2015)
A Must See for 2015
In the first few minutes, I didn't expect much from this movie. But what a surprise. This is a thriller of the true sense - hints of what will happen but the unexpected creeps in. While the end result may not be a surprise in the end, you will truly enjoy following the story and continue to enjoy this as the thriller it was obviously intended to be. It is difficult to say why this movie is good without giving spoilers... after all, it IS a thriller. It is nice to see a movie, apparently low budget, that truly embraces what we expect from a thriller. A true surprise, and I definitely call this a must see, one of the better "thriller" movies of recent years.
Jurassic World (2015)
Movie Relies on Backstory of Jurassic Park, Offers Nothing New
Tremendous disappointment. The story introduces several "plots" that you expect to take off - but none fail to occur. Dinosaur training and general exploration simply fall flat to rely on special effects and fighting to be to focus of the movie. Very low quality in every respect in comparison to the previous Jurassic movies. This movie should never have been made - and the only reason to watch it is for the special effects (yes, they ARE good) - but there is no storyline that follows through other than fighting. If you want to see this movie - see it in 3D so you at least can appreciate the special effects. Otherwise, don't waste your money. I am quite certain many that see it on cable will simply change the channel half way through this movie.
No Escape (2015)
Great Movie but Not Believable
I truly loved this movie and call it a "must see", but... There are far too many illogical and unbelievable "lucky" happenings that reduce this to being far closer to fantasy than reality. The acting is fantastic by all, and the action and effects put this as one of those few movies that I describe as must see at the theater. But, after a few "incidents", everything becomes predictable, and worse, unbelievable. So, the storyline itself could have been much better, but as a movie, this poor, unbelievable, overly predictable storyline becomes a work of art. Although I only gave it a 6 of 10, it is due to the storyline issues - I am certain this would deserve at least an 8 had they cleaned up the "unbelievable" areas. One of the best movies I have seen in 2015!
Vacation (2015)
Chevy Chase Should Be Ashamed
With the trailer and beginning giving the idea this would be somewhat following the same type of exploits and disasters of the "real" Vacation movies... What a disappointment.
If you never saw any of the "real" vacation movies, this can be considered funny if you laugh at crude and rude, simply to obtain an R rating when this is otherwise a PG-13 level movie. The language has no excuse except for raising to an R rating. The comedy in many cases would be funny if not anticipated and far below the expectations of a "Vacation" movie. If you watch this at home, it is very likely that you won't watch it to the very end - there are no redeeming qualities. Chevy Chase and Beverly make their necessary appearance, but should be ashamed of being associated with this movie that has no connection with the real Vacation movies other than several people that happen to be in it. If you never saw the real Vacation movies, you will at least find this movie amusing and better than going to the dentist.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (2015)
The Trailer is Better Than the Movie
After the trailer, and the first Paul Blart movie being very funny... I expected much more than what was delivered. Anxious attempts at humor was all I saw, with the funniest scenes all being in the trailer.
Boring to sit through, although some children may enjoy it. At least this looks to guarantee we won't have a Paul Blart 3 coming out at anytime in the near future.
The strained attempts at humor probably won't hurt Kevin James future, as most people will forget this movie quickly enough.
Don't waste your time on this one, just watch the trailer again instead.
Everly (2014)
Salma Hayek version of Kill Bill ?
If you don't take the film seriously and enjoy the impossible antics of the Kill Bill movies you will like this one. If you also enjoy some great acting by Salam Hayek, in what is otherwise a marginal plot in what only she could resuscitate... you'll love this movie. Certainly not a thriller, as the outcome is predictable from the beginning - I understand why it has low ratings from many reviewers. Relax, grab a bowl of popcorn and prepare to have decent entertainment - but if you had to pay movie theater prices, you will certainly give it a bad review. This is great entertainment, especially if you are a fan of Salma Hayek - I can't picture anyone else moving this film from bad to enjoyable.
Lucy (2014)
Altered States meets Phenomenon... on steroids
The story builds up as well as can be expected - with some decent effects and pretty good car scenes, worthy of comparing to Bullitt. As the story builds both Morgan and Scarlett deliver as expected helping to make the story as believable as science fiction fantasy might be. As we near the end the story takes a change - was there a second author that wrote the last 20 minutes? Lack of imagination and thrusting the villains into an unbelievable and ridiculous ending that leaves me wondering - When will they release the ORIGINAL, but now alternate ending? I look forward to seeing that version - this one is worth walking out on before the last 15 minutes.
Bitten (2008)
A Must See for Vampire Fans
Although many will find fault with this movie, the naive approach taken is unique for vampire movies and the storyline places it among the top vampire movies for must see - along with Let Me In, Interview with a Vampire. However, if Dracula type story lines and high budget is more your style, you simply won't appreciate the movie. The story portrays the education and ignorance of a newly raised vampire and her new friend, neither of whom are aware of how to handle the situations encountered. The low budget is obvious and takes away from the quality of the movie for most viewers, to be sure, but watch it for the unique storyline.
Left Behind (2014)
Nicolas Cage is at the bottom for the first time
By far, one of the worst movies I have watched all the way through - and an embarrassing disappointment of Nicolas Cage having the mistake of being in this poor excuse to pay for a movie ticket. A free viewing at a friend's house is even too expensive - bad at too many levels. The story itself is a bad fantasy, with many scenes simply difficult not to laugh, although it portrays a serious spotlight of this fantasy. The story? Difficult to accept and recognizable from early in the movie (the only reason it was expected that more was to come, and kept the viewer stupidly continuing to watch), to "action" scenes that failed to provide any realism or redeeming qualities to a poor script. I simply wonder how long it will take Mr. Cage to recover from this mistake.
