Spirited (2022)
A new Christmas classic for this home
A great spin on a classic Christmas with great music and a charismatic cast. What more could you ask for?
Having a "cosmic" department who has the job to turn curmudgeons into good people sounds like just the kind of movie that I would love. And this movie really delivered on that idea. Sure, there is some predictability in the plot, but it needs to be somewhat aligned to the Charles Dickens classic or it wouldn't feel right. But the story does go to some unexpected places and delights as a result.
The music is great and the production behind some of the numbers is just wonderful. I was also impressed by the dancing and singing talent of Will Farrell and Ryan Reynolds.
I see that some of the reviews are complaining about a long story. Good Afternoon to you! This story is great!
EDIT (12/2023): It's hard to tell if a movie is a great Christmas movie after one viewing. You need to watch the next Christmas and see if it still holds up. Well, I think I liked this even more. It is my new Christmas tradition!
I see the top review is from some who doesn't like Christmas movies or musicals and they give it a 6. Why are you watching the movie in the first place? If you hate Christmas movies and musicals, then this is obviously not for you. But for anyone else, this is awesome.
Christmas with You (2022)
Aimee Garcia is the standout in a by-the-numbers movie
This is a completely by-the-numbers Christmas RomCom. Except that someone forgot the comedy. You can easily predict every turn in this movie because you have seen this story many times before, just with different characters. The acting for most of the characters is somewhere between passable and good.
BUT, Aimee Garcia brings a real charm to the role and makes the movie worth watching for her performance. I liked her for the role she played in Lucifer and this proves to me that I should start looking for her in other roles. I really would like to see her in another movie as the lead (or co-lead) that has a much better script to see what she can do with that.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
I rarely abandon a movie
But I abondonded this one. No plot and I was just bored. I was up to the waterbed scene. The characters are not interesting, the story is meandering, but not in a good way
Don't waste your time.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Seems serious at first, but gets wilder as it goes - and that doesn't work
The first episodes of this show seem very straight forward. I know this was supposed to be a parody, but it didn't seem to be that. Maybe Kristen Bell did too well at the part. But in the final few episodes, it goes way off the rails and feels like a different show. It would have been better is the show kept a consistent tone throughout. I think I liked the more serious version of this show and I wished it had finished that way.
Metal Lords (2022)
Very enjoyable and I am still thinking about it
This is an enjoyable movie that is well acted, well produced and well filmed. There are a couple of plot issues, but they are not big enough to ruin the movie.
It doesn't reach that instant classic stage, so I would normally rate it a 7. But I keep thinking about it days later, so I am boosting my rating to an 8.
Into the Woods (2014)
Missing good music
Great cast (mostly), beautiful production, but they totally missed on the music. The story was interesting but it kind of fell apart at the end and went in a different direction that ruined the story. I guess the classic fairy tales have a dark side, but this movie started with the Disney kind of tale and switched it up to something darker and it felt jarring.
Fantasy Island (2020)
One twist too many
I was really enjoying this movie. There is somewhat of a twist around the middle of the movie that I thought made the movie better. There is certainly some weird stuff going on that is hard to explain, but this is Fantasy Island where anything could happen. At that point, I found myself thinking, "Wow, this is so much better than the trailers. I really thought this was going to be bad".
But then, the twist that came out of nowhere. Really bad choice from the writers. I liked the movie well enough, but a different choice would have made this a much better movie.
