Venus and Serena (2012)
Eye-opening!
This is an eye-opening film with many surprising moments. It touches on a lot of subjects and controversial moments in the Williams sisters' careers. There are some raw emotions at the core of this film, and it offers a significant glimpse into how they became the superstar athletes we know today. Even if you think you knew a lot about Venus and Serena before, you'll feel like you know much more after seeing it. The filmmakers managed to get a lot of unfiltered access, and we're lucky to see and hear the Williams discuss things you rarely get to hear them speak about. This film is touching, honest, funny, and very real. It's definitely one of the best documentaries of the year.
ANNIE: It's the Hard-Knock Life, from Script to Stage (2013)
Broadway fans will love it
Going in, I wasn't expecting too much. While I'm a big fan of Broadway, I'd never been a fan of the musical Annie and I'm not exactly sure why. That changed after seeing this film, which truly gives a unique, behind-the-scenes look at creating a Broadway show. Not only is it beautifully shot on a grand scale, but it contains many intimate moments that are moving and heartfelt along the way. It makes one appreciate the overwhelming amount of hard work that goes into creating a Broadway show. Here's how I know this film really worked: It made me want to see the full "Annie" production on Broadway, and those words would never have come out of my mouth before seeing this film.
