Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story (1995)
Moving and inspirational love story
I re- watched a grainy video of this after 10+ years and was captivated by this powerful TV movie all over again. I wish it was easier to see a decent version on Region 2 DVD or via streaming in the UK. Glenn Close and Judy Davis (who both won Emmys) are simply fantastic, creating a chemistry that jumps off the screen and they are well supported by the rest of the cast, which includes an early role for Ryan Reynolds. Exec produced by Close and Barbra Streisand this has excellent production values. This was an important and (at the time) daring film to push an important message into the mainstream and help put further pressure to change US Military policy for both lesbian and gay individuals. The movie works as both a love story and as a powerful message movie. This will always remain one of my absolute favourites.
London Kills (2019)
Mildly entertaining
Watched both series when off sick for a week. The script is nowhere near the normally high standard you would expect and asks you to suspend incredulity way too far. Most of the characters don't even behave like police officers or follow even basic crime scene procedures. So it's more of a "soap opera" really and not "prime time" viewing. Sharon Small is the only actor in the cast that feels convincing in her role. Liked the London locations, but amazed at so little traffic or extras and the police building only seems to have about 10 people in total and no one answers the phone!! So it's watchable if you don't expect too much, but can't recommend this.
Godless (2017)
Superb western
A compelling story, cleverly constructed script, with well drawn characters, excellent performances and gorgeous cinematography. Simply one of the best westerns I've seen in a long time. Plaudits to all concerned. Thought the ending was perfect so not sure why some weren't keen. Isn't it great to see westerns with strong female characters at the centre of the story!? I can see why this did so well at the Emmys.
