One, Two, Three (1961)
Best comedy ever!
I love this movie for a couple of reasons.
The story is originally from a play by Ferenc Molnár, who was Hungarian, like I am, so his other works are well known in my country. I love the play, and I'd give it a 9, but (I don't say this very often) the movie is much better.
It all takes place in the separated Berlin in 1961. Its about a rich man(working for a big soft drink company) of "wealth and taste", who has to look after his boss's daughter, which turns out to be a real struggle as the girl secretly marries a communist party member of the east side.
The director is our beloved Billy Wilder, who surely knew how to make a good comedy. The film doesn't have any moment without a great joke, I laughed so hard, I fell down from the sofa(not joking). The biggest difference between the play and the movie is the amount of political references and elements. Its a fight between capitalism and communism on every level, mostly by humorous conversations between the characters.
The dialogues are fantastic, and haven't lost their topicality over the years(its recommended to know about the political situation though). James Cagney steals the show as the main character, its jesting to see an actor who used to play mostly bad guys as a funny character.
I'd recommend this film to anyone. The writing, the characters, the acting are all excellent, and the humour still challenges the diaphragm.
10/10
The Basketball Diaries (1995)
Drugs are bad, m'kay?
I'm a huge fan of DiCaprio, so I watched this movie with great expectations. It was slightly disappointing.
This is a propaganda film, not from the better kind. As my summary said, it was more like Mr. Mackeys speech against drugs from South Park. The main character plays in a basketball team, wanting to be a professional, but as he starts to take drugs, he loses his career, his friends, even his family. That kinda sums it up.
I'm a 16 year old teenager, and it's clear that this movie targets my age group by its message. The book was much better in my opinion, because that had an impact on me(I read it after the movie). It has a moralist, preachy message, which is very weak. It didn't make me feel disgusted by drugs. I think Requiem for a Dream is a much, much better film to show teenagers what the consequences of taking drugs are.
However, it wasn't very bad. There was one scene, which captures the books atmosphere quite good. The acting was solid, especially DiCaprio, who's as good as always, and the soundtrack is also alright.
12 Angry Men (1957)
Timeless classic. Not by accident.
This is a subjective review, so it shows only my opinion about this movie.
This is a very exciting story about 12 jurors quarreling over the fate of the accused, but it's more profound than that. The main character (played by Henry Fonda) is the only one, who believes that the accused guy is not guilty. He tries to convince the other jurors to agree with his opinion.
The brilliant thing in this is that the actual happenings are not known for them(nor the viewer), so even we can't be sure, if they make the right or the wrong choice. As the story progresses, the viewer himself is to be convinced by either side. All of the jurors have personalities, not one of them is trite. It's a great achievement for the movie to build up such characters in very little time.
The atmosphere is great as it draws in the viewer, and the talent of the actors are shown clearly, because the film doesn't have corny action, or gore like many of them nowadays, it's just pure acting, and directing.
I can not mention a mistake, not even by today's standards. There have been so many attempts to make something perfect, but this is one of the few ones in my opinion, which really is. It was made by little money, in b&w and it only adds to its charm.
I give this movie a 10/10, one of my personal favourites.
