Lako je Raletu (2023)
A waste
I guess the humor from 20 years ago does not translate at all into 2023. This Serbian attempt to remake Raymond is truly just a waste of money. The shaky camera that zooms in and out for no reason does not help the absence of humor and comedic timing. The situations are funny if you retell them to a friend, but while watching you are very distracted by the over-acting of theater trained actors. For that reason, the characters just inhabit the same space and speak lines they know by heart, without any chemistry between them. Miscast, mismatched and not worth your time. I kept hoping for at least one joke to land successfully: nada.
Belfast (2021)
Lackluster
You will love it if you're Irish. You will learn a little more about it if you're not. This movie lacky any kind of everyday humour to balance the cruelty of life.
Feuchtgebiete (2013)
Excellent piece of cinema, but not for everyone
Before I decided to see this movie I was familiar with the phenomena of the novel I even read it but only half way through, because I thought it was not leading anywhere.
Most people around me say that it is pointless and everything the main character does, all her little hygiene experiments, make no sense. Even the few ones who didn't abandon the book half way through.
Since the German critics gave the book positive reviews, I was wondering what's behind it.
I expected the movie to be trash. But it isn't. It is beautifully shot and well edited, the soundtrack is on point and best of all - the leading actress shows such a refreshing talent. At first, her face looks so friendly and familiar. Then she strikes you with all kind of emotions, acted out almost easily.
If you are interested in what happens in the novel and want to treat yourself to a little sexual gore fest, see the movie. However, what I take away from it that feeling you only know if your family is dysfunctional too and the realization that the choices you make in life are an aftermath of that. I hope you are in touch with all your mommy/daddy/sibling issues, if these things don't make you too uncomfortable and you have learned to live with all that - you will be deeply touched by this story.
Warning: see the movie alone, as if you would be reading a book. If you see it with your friend, relative or God forbid: a family member - it might lead to complications in your relationship and you don't need anymore of that.
Luckily the first 5 minutes of the movie show you what you are in for. If you survive this, you're good.
Feud (2017)
No more jokes about wire hangers
I know, I know, it's only been one episode and it's hard to give a full review. But I personally love this show, like everything Ryan Murphy creates. My favorite thing is the performance by Jessica Lange.
We have all seen Faye Dunaway's version of Joan Crawford. Dunaway put a lot of effort into her performance. Unfortunately it didn't pay off, resulting in "Mommy Dearest" to be promoted as a comedy in the end. What's left is a joke about wire hangers and endless slapping scenes. Such a camp classic!
Lange, now she's something different, showing us a certain vulnerability to Crawford and I can't wait to see more. Still, it's hard to separate Lange, as an old divaesque actress herself, from Crawford. There's a certain comedy to Crawford's way but still I can't help getting to understand her more and more and see her humanity, as if she was just a simple person, dealing hard with age and sexism.
Sarandon surprised me even more. I haven't seen her acting in a long time. Lange was present in several American Horror Story seasons, so we are used to her marvelous performance. I must say Sarandon resemblance to Betty Davis, alongside her diction and gestures, beats Lange's performance as a slow paced Crawford. I salute Sarandon's comeback to the small screen (she was in 6 episodes on The Big C back in 2012).
I am positive that this season is going to be great. It opens a window to more opportunities: if this one goes well, we might see more real life stories about celebrities and they might involve even more (female) star power.
