The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
What Was This
What sort of film was I watching here? The first hour consisted of mundane poorly acted drivel. Three ordinary school children who did ordinary school children things....like the rest of the worlds school children. This was followed by some sort of adlib "On location who really cares about your holiday snaps" mundane travelogue. Sorry Clint I really don't know what happened here but cripes was this one hell of a boring waste of viewing time!....So let's cut to the chase! Anybody desperately wanting to watch this film fast forward the first hour and 6 minutes and enjoy. If your watching this in the Cinema....ask the projectionist to do the same and please attention Directors! Please leave soldiering to the soldiers and acting to the actors!
God's Own Country (2017)
Superb!
Very rarely do I bother with reviews but very rarely do tastefully directed and beautifully produced films of this genre actually come along. Reminiscent of Brokeback Mountain, but located in Yorkshire UK this film has the same cinematic qualities of Kes and Far From The Madding Crowd (1967)
I am also totally impressed with the absolute gem of a cast! Oscar nominee performances by Josh O'Connor and Alec Secareanu and so nice to see Gemma Jones who was superbly cast as Grandmother. A very rare, quality film, that deserves all the praise that anyone wishes to throw at it!
The Returned (2015)
Great Series, Sadly undervalued by the A&E Studios
Great Series!...I Very rarely write or review anything but lets say it how it is with regard to The Returned and it's quite simple. Firstly, you really do not need to be a professional reviewer or an intellectual to know what you do or do not like when it comes to a TV series. In this instance I downloaded this series and watched each episode over a period of 3 evenings. Usually any viewer would know by the end of either the first or second episode whether they are hooked by the series or end up watching each episode under duress. In my case I was hooked by whole series and by the well rounded performances of the actors and the clever plots and subplots. Sadly, it wasn't until I reached episode 8 and wondered where the series was going that I found out that there was no plans for a second series. It's a major shame and criminal that there are Television companies out there that are legally allowed to dangle Television series in front of its viewers and then deprive them of a follow up series or, at least, a well rounded finale to the whole series. The French counterpart to this series, Les Revenants, at least had the decency to film a second series. Putting the Television viewer first, before its ratings! Shame on you A&E Studios!
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016)
Absolutely Dreadful!
I was a big fan of this BBC Comedy series back in the day, so thought there would be no problem giving it one and a half hours of my undivided attention....the outcome being that I was moved enough to write this short review. Sadly, this is yet another example of a Brit Comedy Series that does not, in any way shape or form, translate to the BIG screen. Whoever thought that turning Ab Fab into a movie would ever have been a good idea? There was a very thin plot to this movie peppered with an array of celebrities, not actors, playing cardboard characters. I am sure I must have missed one or two celebs through dozing off in what turned out to be one of the most unfunny comedy movies I have ever seen....cripes I couldn't even raise a smile!...This film was monotonous at best and is continual proof that what was televised in the 1990's should stay in the 1990's. If you really want to do something productive give this a movie a miss and wallpaper your lounge instead!
The Physician (2013)
First Class Adaptation!
An absolutely wonderful movie and great adaptation of Noah Gordon's book "The Physician". I haven't watched such an enjoyable and lavishly produced historical film since the likes of Kingdom of Heaven The imagery is astounding throughout the movie and for a bit of fiction it is historically believable and leaves the viewer wondering how much was based on fact. The director of photography did a gorgeous job in creating a very atmospheric film the cast giving a first class performance throughout. The story is very elaborate and intense to the very last moment with a major splattering of battle Action and intrigue throughout. I am very impressed with this movie that for some reason seems to have slipped under the radar with a lack of international promotion or advertising. This is one of those films that would shine in anyone's DVD Collection.
Carrie (2013)
Underrated Movie
Director Kimberley Peirce has done, in my opinion, a very admirable job at directing this remake of the 1976 classic Brian De Palma film. It was a cult movie back in the day and although there are many similarities between this and the original movie this new version definitely has the edge thanks to great casting. Chloe Grace Moretz fares better than Sissy Spacek has the deluded naïve and innocent Carrie White and looks closer in age to Kings vision from the original novel. As the film progresses the better the characters become. Juliane Moore was cast perfectly in the role of Margaret White who picked up where Piper Laurie's role left off not only does she torture Carrie but in this version she tortures herself and the bond between the two differs from the original film and the book and was down in part to the artistic licence of it's director. It was this mother and daughter bond that worked for me and gave this film the edge over the original version.
The Man from Earth (2007)
Superbly Staged Drama
I have just come across this 2007 movie on Blue Ray and cannot believe that a quality Sci-Fi film like this slipped beneath my radar. Film critics and the media and all film award bodies should have been shouting and screaming the praises of this film back in the day! It is very rare in this day and age to be completely sucked in to the unravelling drama that a low budget film like this has quite honestly mastered and excelled at. This would have definitely been on my shortlist at the 2007 Academy awards! Much Kudos to the Director Producer and cast of relatively unknown actors who all made this one of the most enjoyable and intelligent "What If" Sci-fi movies I have watched in some time. This would make a great stage show too!
