La otra conquista (1998)
very realistic and unbiased
I felt like the movie was very unbiased toward the Spanish and the natives in the movie. Most movies related to the Aztecs or Spaniards show one good and one evil. Either the horrible Spanish conquistadors or the savage Aztec natives. But this movie made me feel as if both had humanistic sides. The monk who truly beloved he was saving their souls, and the love of Cortes for the Aztec princess ( despite that he threw her in jail). And how the Aztecs compassionately cared about one another, and didn't just sacrifice for killings sake. It showed a side that wasn't shown in almost any movies. The wanting to be sacrificed, and the pain of loss of the person. It was a very powerful movie with very deep rooted emotional scenes that would connect to me personally and make me feel compassion and disgust for the Spaniards and natives. It wasn't another kill, kill, kill movie of the savage and the " honorable" enlighteners.
Ichimei (2011)
great movie, but translation seemed off
The basic plot of the movie is amazing.very original, and like nothing I've seen. The way the director chose not to end the movie with a revenge killing was amazing and didn't leave me with wanting of the characters to die. It made me feel as if his message got through and that his death at the end was fitting due to his completion of what he set out to do. The knowledge of the clans wrong doing set him for revenge but more powerful than blood. It seemed as if he made all the right moves and kept his honor. Unlike the clan. It made me feel content and confused with what really happened during the time of the samurai. The ending made me feel as if the icon of the armor was almost a god figure. When he tried to take it it said to me that the main character was saying to the clan " you aren't good enough to have it". And the throwing away of the hair knots made me think of how low the country of Japan got with the lowest point for me being world war 2. It was a very strong movie with lots of satisfying shots. But the only thing I didn't like was the subtitles. Sometimes they went to fast to read and left me wondering what someone said. Or the translation would be off for me.
Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
confusing when unexplained
I felt like the movie was very enjoyable but very confusing plot wise. If I watched the movie without any prior knowledge of it I probably would of thought it was a bunch of randomly scattered skits, or a day in the life of an alternate universe. It had me in suspense the whole time. I never knew where it was going to go, or which character the camera was going to follow. The acting made it feel as if that was actual life and not a joke. As if it was possible as a serious series of events. My favorite scenes where with the police and how they were very hypocritical and childish. Showed a different view of police than the respectable flawless man.
