Leave the World Behind (2023)
Why all the hate ?
I can see some people being a little disappointed because it isn't a 'complete' story, but no less than 'The Hobbit' series of such like. There was a good story here, well acted and with a large potential to be true one day. It doesn't give complete information, no, but that's because it is a story from the point-of-view of the main characters, and they learn a little bit more as their story unfolds, at the same rate that we do. Admittedly, the film is not all 'action and excitement' but there are more than enough films full of that already. This is just a story about a family stuck in the middle of a crisis that they neither understand nor comprehend and how they try to cope with it.
Overall, not a bad watch and I hope that a sequel is in the pipeline.
Deadline (2022)
What are they talking about ??
We have no idea what these recent reviews are based on as this is an excellent series, well written and clever in its execution. The major plot twist in the final episode is what makes it different from the usual run-of-the-mill crime drama and to say that "it's a waste of four hours of my life" is totally incomprehensible to us. Myself and the missus binge-watched the four episodes in one evening, as we regularly do, and very much enjoyed it.
Don't listen to the nay-sayers and give this little gem a chance. If we had looked at the reviews before starting the series then I doubt that we would have bothered,... I'm glad that we didn't.
The Teacher (2022)
What the hell with all the negativity??
Watched all four episodes and found it to be a good, engaging, interesting drama. The low ratings lately are incomprehensible and I can only assume are placed from our American cousins who prefer their drama's to involve car crashes and chase scenes... IDK.... If you like a good British drama, well acted. Then you can do far worse than giving this a few hours of your time.
The story trots along from the initial disbelief of the lead character, to her eventual realistsation that all is not right with the story as its being presented. He own guilt at her drunken behaviour leads her to suspect that she may be at fault but then her suspicions start to grow as more details come to light.
Altogether a good story line, well played out, and the threads slowly pull together to a good conclusion..... what more do you need in a gritty drama ? .....
Addicted (2014)
I don't understand the hate for this film
It makes a change to see a difficult subject from the female point of view. Perhaps a lot of the very low reviews are from folks who can't accept that this sort of issue exists and would rather put their heads in the sand.
Affairs are so often portrayed from the male perspective with the woman being the hurt party, but in this film a woman is forced to face an addiction that she knows will ruin her life, but cannot turn her back on the compulsion that drives her.
Overall this is a thoughtful film, well made, dealing with a controversial topic from a unusual point of view and deserves to be given a chance.
Coherence (2013)
Great story but.......
Very good and original storyline but the camera-work is terrible ! It's a shame, as we very nearly gave up on this little gem five minutes in, due to the crazy shake of the camera view.... its like the cameraman has parkinsons or something.... totally unnecessary. If You can get through the nausea inducing videotography, the actual film is well worth watching.
The Frame (2014)
Good concept but way too slow at the end.
As another reviewer said, would have made a good 'Black Mirror' episode, but the last 30 minutes was an utter waste of film. Could have happily cut that down to five minutes and not lost much in the story telling. Was a shame because to my mind went from a solid 6/7 down to a 4 in that last half an hour.
Atonement (2007)
Very slow and arty
If you're not a fan of the book then this might be worth a miss. Ok story but told in a very slow and confusing style. Lots of earnest walking and boring close-ups.
Destroyer (2018)
Overlong for the story being told
Destroyer isn't a bad film but could easily have lost half an hour without compromising the storyline over-much. Too many long silences and arty moments for my taste.
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
What the hell did I waste my time on this for !
What a load of arty crap !! Slow, unintelligable and the musical score is the worst load of trash we've heard in years. ... Don't listen to the 9 out of 10 crowd, I can only assume that they are paid reviews because this film is utter rubbish !! DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS... There, you have been warned.
Paradox (2016)
I've seen worse
Never going to be a classic, but definitely watchable. Some nice twists and turns and unexpected ending.
Death Note (2017)
Ignore the fanboys
If you have never seen the anime and just take the film on its own merits then it's a good watch. Definately for fans of the Final Destination type genre film. I found it very entertaining anyway, for what it's worth and wouldn't have bothered writing a review but for looking at the rating and wondering why it was so low. ..
