Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Critics reviews do no justice
For a start, let me say that although I am a vivid Batman fan, I can still see the movie's shortcomings and after all the hype, I felt let down a bit after 1st viewing (2nd viewing was more enjoyable) Yet, 28% on RT is absolutely out of touch with reality, putting the movie on par with My big fat Greek wedding 2 and London has fallen. Moreover, the movie was always doomed to suffer from Nolan's trilogy comparisons which do not make much sense as the two universes as vastly different. I've mostly enjoyed the movie and though I've listed a lot of cons, most of them did not bother me that much.
Pros
● Ben Affleck as Batman- nailed it 100%
● Darker batman, brutal, makes you wonder if he is a good person at all (even the killing part works for me)
● Superman vs Zod fight from human perspective
● Batman vs Superman fight (should have been longer though)
● Batman rescuing Marta K. - great fighting choreography
● Lex Luthor Jr. presentation let's not forget this is NOT Lex Luthor but his son
● Perry White - all of his lines were spot on and very well executed
● Alfred
● Wonder Woman - great introduction and short on screen time, we will get to see more of her in WW
● Knightmare
● The score- used quite appropriately on all places
● The cameos of Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg were awesome. It was NOT needed to see more of them in this movie.
● Last scene between Luthor and Batman was great with Luthor warning of an impending threat
● Many scenes/shots were taken directly from comics- and worked very well, particularly Superman's power literally sucked out of him after the nuclear bomb in space
Cons
● Thomas and Martha Wayne's deaths could have been omitted, we've seen that too many times, the nightmare with the giant bat was enough proof of Bruce's torment
● Superman stopping batman when the latter is chasing bad guys; the very scene would have worked much better during a different time of the movie
● Flash appearing to B. Wayne- unnecessary addition to an already convoluted plot
● L. Lane getting the spear to help the Trinity; she was not aware of its potential. Batman should have got that, his participation in the final fight was limited anyway
● Luthor outsmarted everyone far too easily but I can bite that as Wayne and Clark were going through a lot of emotions and had clouded judgments already
● The scene where sen. Finch visited Luthor to tell him about the restriction on the kryptonite import (though there were some great lines)- Luthor imported it anyway
● Should have built more towards Batman vs Superman, showing Bruce preparation more, maybe even building the exoskeleton
● Batman realizes Superman is not a threat far too quickly. We could have had a few moments/scenes earlier in the movie with Bruce genuinely wondering if he is right about Superman
● Doomsday fight (not that bad but just way too much for one movie) Should have had Batman vs Superman as climax
● Doomsday could have just been shown at the end (moving inside the cocoon) and have the fight as an opening/mid scene in JL1
● Forced ending, too many story lines in the last 40mins
Overall, the movie was quite enjoyable and though it did not live up to its immense hype, I am confident the next DCCU movies will fare better!
