Eternals (2021)

Meh...
14 January 2022
Marvel (Disney) are picking up bad habits from working with Sony. The original two Spiderman series were essentially love stories wrapped in a comic book superhero movie. Sony just didn't get it, until Marvel started doing their thing with spidey.

And now Marvel have made the same mistake. Eternals is essentially a love story....boring.

This whole movie feels completely set apart from the main MCU, not part of it. And no amount of references to the other MCU movies can change that. It all seemed very forced.

Overall, the acting wasn't great. The dude who controls peoples minds was good. The actor who played Ikarus was good. Angelina Jolie was....well, she was Angelina Jolie. Always awesome, but that's coz I've had a crush on her since Hackers.

Not my cup of tea.

Just, no.

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS BELOW! READ AT YOUR PERIL!

A real mess of a movie. Plot/story makes no sense and they've taken the comedic elements way overboard. Even Woody Harrelson (whom I love as an actor) is about as menacing as Peppa Pig.

I'm also a big fan of Tom Hardy, so this movie is a massive let-down from the first.

If it wasn't abundantly clear before, it is now. Sony is just not capable of doing Marvel characters. The only saving grace is the end credit scene. Now that Venom seems to be part of the multiverse, Marvel can start doing this character justice (I hope).

Wasteland (2012)

Best British Film in a long time.
6 April 2014
Having watched a number of British crime/gangster/hiest films has led me to a simple conclusion...we just don't do them so well (with the exception of a notable few). Flimsy story lines, flimsier plots and character development to name just a few of my gripes. Very few stand up against what the rest of the world has to offer.

I went into this film with very little expectation, and up until the last 30 mins it seemed I was to be proved right yet again....not so!

A great watch in the end. Yes, the storyline doesn't tread any new ground. But what it does, it does very well I think. It seems to plod along quite nicely with some decent enough character development and acting (but to be honest nothing spectacular). But the plot and the twists towards the end are well worth the wait. And kudos to the director/writer to leave in a 'did he/didn't he' scenario, where it is left to the viewers imagination as to what happens next. Far too few film makers do this in my opinion, preferring to spoon-feed the audience every bit of detail.

I was also impressed with the soundtrack. Very contemporary (with the odd golden oldie thrown in), and which was actually quite emotional at times.

I must admit I have been rather generous in rating this a 7/10. But that is because I am just so pleased that something of this quality has been produced in Britain.

Would definitely recommend this.
