Star Wars: Visions: Screecher's Reach (2023)

"I don't wanna see a ghost. GASPS! I saw the ghost."
4 May 2023
In complete awe that Cartoon Saloon is part of the Star Wars universe. Screecher's Reach was incredible. A deep story with a touch of pure horror. The world looks great and unique to the style Cartoon Saloon offers. Daal is a character who you'll get invested in quite easily in this short story. A lot more is going on in her life than what initially seems to be the case. It seems like such an innocent thing when this group of friends do when leave work to check if a ghost is real or not. Lovely surprise to hear Anjelica Houston do some voice work. Such a great idea to let animation studios worldwide tell stories in this galaxy. #MayThe4thBeWithYou.

Good idea which could have been better
31 January 2023
Feel like this had the potential to be a much better film. There are some good moments and good performances from the likes of Colm Meaney. Overall though it isn't able to pull off the real dramatic moments and think it should have stuck with going all out with the mad, great-looking redcaps.

Side note: Fear Dearg translates to the singular "Red man" but we were definitely dealing with more than one redcap so it should have been Fir dhearga. Guess it's not too important but couldn't stop thinking about it everytime it was mentioned.

Definitely interested in checking out Grabbers now though and will check future Wright films out.

My Father's Dragon
11 November 2022
Really enjoyed My Father's Dragon. A story of bravery with two likeable characters. Everyone is going to adore Boris the Dragon. He puts a smile on your face! Gaten Matarazzo is the perfect choice to voice him. Great talent behind the other voices as well from Jacob Tremblay, Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno and Ian McShane to name but a few.

Animation from Cartoon Saloon is always going to be special and this new film from Nora Twomey keeps with this tradition. Colours and textures are so lovely. Cartoon Saloon also never shy away from some intense scenes and some very young viewers might find this so. The story does feel a bit disjointed in places.

Overall a very enjoyable film with a fantastic score from Mychael and Jeff Danna.

Henry Selick is a genius filmmaker
1 November 2022
Henry Selick is some filmmaker and Wendell & Wild is exactly what I wanted for his next film. The craft on display is quite amazing and even though the effort put in to the stop motion animation is clearly huge, the creativity and seamless transitions between each scene make it seem effortless. So many sight gags to enjoy and voice performances that compliment the characters to appreciate here.

Honestly only heard of this film last week and would love Netflix to promote so much of their content to help a new audience to properly discover new filmmakers for themselves. Fingers crossed this happens for My Father's Dragon their next big animated film.

Also would like to note how great the soundtrack is. Really appreciate when songs work well in a scene and aren't just thrown in there for the sake of it.

An Cailín Ciúin
26 February 2022
Watched this lovely film at the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival 2022.

I know it's only February but this is the best film I've seen this year. If you ever get a chance to watch 'An Cailín Ciúin' in the future, seize the chance.

Phil Lynott, a poet of rock music
20 June 2021
Ah I just loved every moment of this.

I remember growing up and knowing 'The Boys Are Back In Town' and other classic Thin Lizzy tunes without knowing the name of the band. Have to thank my cousin and uncle for one summer really getting to know their music.

With that being said I still didn't know much about Phil Lynott and the life that he lived. And what a life he lived. For someone taken too early, he really left his mark. This film gives such a beautiful sense of the person he was and how he went about making his music. An immense talent and a genius lyricist. He wrote so many amazing songs.

An excellent documentary from Emer Reynolds which at times I found really emotional and heartbreaking. Highly recommend.

Phil Lynott really was the greatest Irish Rock Star.

I totally get it 😊
1 June 2019
Loved every second of it and I didn't want it to end. Such brilliant central performances but really the whole cast are fantastic and get a chance to show us their characters. Script is really well written and the film as a whole feels so fresh. Also loved the song choices, they're absolute tunes! Can't believe this is Olivia Wilde's first film as a director. It's really confidently made. Plenty of fun and surprises in this one. Go see it and enjoy 😎

Missing Link (2019)

Laika have done it again! :)
6 April 2019
This is the fifth film from the film studio Laika. Their previous films include Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014) and Kubo and the Two Strings (2016). Laika are an animation studio who use stop-motion animation such as how Aardman Animations use it in the same style for Wallace & Gromit.

There are some very famous voices in this new film. Hugh Jackman provides the voice for Sir Lionel Frost. Zoe Saldana provides the voice for a character called Adelina Fortnight, a free-spirited woman who is well able to look after herself. Then it is Zach Galifianakis who plays the innocent Sasquatch, Mr. Link, who wants to travel across the world with Sir Lionel Frost to find any other creatures similar to himself. There are also plenty of other famous voices to be heard, such as Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, Amrita Acharia, Timothy Olyphant, Matt Lucas and David Walliams.

Missing Link is a wonderfully beautiful film. It reminds me of a really exciting adventure film which feels like a mix of Indiana Jones, Sherlock Holmes and elements from a Western. Even though those influences are there, the film manages to do its own thing. It's written so well and the dialogue between the characters is hilarious. The film also looks amazing. Laika have a certain skill and technique which is ever so creative for this form of art. The film is so good that you forget that you're listening to Hugh Jackman or any of the other actors. You're under a spell watching the film and the entire spectacle of it all sweeps you away.

One of the best and most original films I have ever seen. It doesn't matter what age you are, anybody will enjoy this wonderful film! 🙂 10/10
