Vienna Blood (2019)
Many strong female characters
For a show with 2 male leads, I was pleased to see many strong, competent female characters. Also a fairly diverse cast. One of my favorites, is the archivist at the police station. The assistant at the coroner's office. The museum curator and sometime love interest. Max's sister, running the family business. Even minor characters such as Max's secretary are written as smart and capable.
The stunning sets are so well lit and the period is believable and immersive. Gorgeous Costumes round out the entire package. I'm no expert on late 1800s fashion, but the budget for the feature cast must be huge. Everything is impeccably tailored and seems to be consistent with a subtle and tasteful theme.
Beautifully filmed. Extremely well acted. Clever writing and fully realized characters. Do watch!
The Redneg (2021)
Not sure what they were trying for...
Poorly written, poorly directed, poorly filmed. The "hero" must have some type of narcolepsy because he falls asleep at the most inappropriate moments. A dystopian future where the women are taking back the planet. The men that are left are so stupid they probably deserve to die. The writers and directors are clearly not a fan of women and miss every opportunity to create strong, believable female characters. The premise of the film is interesting but these are not the guys to deliver it. What could have been a decent idea was lost in weird, unexplained tangents and story lines that simply peter out. I hate to bash someone's efforts, especially when they obviously took a great deal of time, but this was juvenile and disrespectful to both women and men.
After Yang (2021)
Beautiful, gentle movie
Beautiful, gentle movie that makes you think about what it means to be part of a family. Colin Farrell at his best. I'm so glad he makes movies like this. He's an underrated actor. This director coaxed an amazing performance from the cast. The movie shows you don't need an enormous budget for special effects to make realistic dystopian about the future. Well written, well filmed, well acted, well produced. Strong representation of a smart, thoughtful and sensitive director.
Famille nucléaire (2020)
Life doesn't always happen the way you'd hope
Awakening, even in the most open of atmospheres, may not be simple. Trying to keep everything and everyone running is a lot for your average young man. Disappointment and desire can clash with duty and dependability.
Passée l'aube (2017)
Subtle and cinematic
This film makes you hurt for the two main characters. The life of judgment and the looks of disdain. When in the end, the decision might just be taken away from you.
