Fair Haven (2016)

Mature handling of topics

The storyline was predictable, i.e. A gay boy trying to fit into a girl/boy relationship because that rural culture expects hetero relationships. Nevertheless, it was good to see a positive ending. Too many times in films and real life, it comes to some type of disaster like suicide. It should assure young gay boys that there can be positive outcomes. Michael Grant, I believe, is actually a pianist. A nice touch. Brahms and Chopin.

Exceptional

Merli is one of the better LGBTQ series. Wonderful cast of characters and well directed. The philosophical scenes were inspired and the Bolena actress did an excellent job. Occasionally the subtitles seemed to make the dialogue a bit puzzling, sort of jumping the track. The music was amazingly fitting. Would like to know where I might obtain the second season.

Promising

This series is several notches above other BBC cop stories. I am sorry that there was only 1 season. The romance was handled well and the storylines interesting.

Reduced to Soap
8 March 2022
The initial episodes were promising, but the second season is worse than daytime soap. MacAninch and Zoe Lucker characters have been reduced to banal soap opera. Pathetic. The lesser characters such as James Hiller's are the only saving grace of this seies.

Excellent film! See it twice!!

The uncluttered staging of this work allowed the viewer to concentrate on the performers and what was being said. The impact was visceral, and yet the subject matter of the dialogue intellectually stimulating. Performances by Jaeger and Mammana were outstanding. The emotional intensity just below the surface was gripping. Someone finally expressed what I have felt in my life.

Scenes like waiting at the corner were so expressive....no need for words! I've been there.

A superb film!
18 December 2005
Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal turn in portrayals of exceptional depth and with uncanny ability to portray what a full embodiment of love between two men consists. Scenes continue to revisit me and with each I live through the heart-wrenching anguish again. As Proulx said, it is hard to get these two men out of your mind. Ang Lee's pacing and direction has given the film the time to tell it's story in very believable terms. The isolation these men feel when apart is heightened by the lonesome vastness of the mountainous setting in which their love takes root. The photography is stunning. The supporting cast are also exceptional and so believable. It is to Proulx genius and Lee's direction that this romance of gut wrenching emotion avoids sliding into any sentimentality. It will go into history as a classic. I want to see it again!
